An all-purpose laptop also needs to be priced competitively. So without further ado here are the best all-purpose laptops of 2016 and 2017.

Best All-Purpose Laptop Under $500

Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition 15.6-InchDell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition 15.6-Inch

Dell are known for their budget friendly offerings and rugged business machines. However, these laptops are usually full of unwanted third party apps and features that will slow down your machine. This is where Microsoft has stepped in and promises no third-party bloatware with their Signature Edition laptops. This means that the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition will only ship with a few Microsoft apps that you can easily remove from your laptop if you want a completely barebones Windows laptop. The Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV is an updated version of the Inspiron I5558-2144SLV and has now been beefed up with a newer sixth generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor for increased performance. While the newer processor will support DDR4 RAM, Dell has decided to use the same DDR3L RAM as its predecessor. However this is not a mark against the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV as the installed 8GB of RAM will still feel snappy while surfing the web or working in more hardware intensive apps. A new processor also means a new Intel HD Graphics chip, which will mean slightly better performance for the casual gamer who enjoys titles such as Diablo 3, Warframe or CS: Go. The Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV also sees and improvement in the display department, as it now features a Full-HD display so that you can enjoy your favorite 1080p media. In addition to the sharp display, the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV also features a touchscreen panel with 10-finger multi-touch support that will allow you to easily navigate around Windows. Another new feature is the addition of an Intel RealSense 3D camera. This allows the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV to utilize Windows Hello functionality for quick and easy log-ins and enhanced security. You also get a backlit keyboard to allow you to work more comfortably in low light condition. One of the only drawbacks is that like all budget laptops it has a slower 5400rpm hard drive. While it offers ample storage space, it will mean waiting longer for Windows to load and apps to launch.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 5.36 lbs

  • Skylake-based i5 processor
  • Full-HD display
  • Intel RealSense 3D camera
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Clean version of Windows 10

Cons

  • Slower hard drive
  • No IPS display
  • Only one USB 3.0 port

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition is another great budget friendly solution from Dell and despite the use of a slower 5400rpm hard drive, this laptop still offers great performance.

ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 13.3-InchASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 13.3-Inch

Ultraportable laptops such as the Apple MacBook Air have become ever more popular for travellers and office professionals who are constantly bouncing between meetings. But if you are not an Apple fan and want a good ultraportable laptop that runs Windows 10, then the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 is worth considering for its attractive price. The elegant aluminum unibody design weighs in at just 2.9 pounds and is a mere half an inch thick. Powering this compact ultrabook is a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U ultra low wattage processor and 8GB of DDR3L RAM, this allows the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 to easily run your everyday run of the mill apps. The downside is that the 8GB of RAM is soldered to the mainboard and cannot be upgraded so you will have to make do with the installed RAM. Its super fast solid state drive will mean that you will be able to boot up Windows 10 in a matter of seconds and your apps will launch way faster than with traditional hard drives. With 256GB of storage space, you shouldn’t have any issues when it comes to storing your work or personal files, but it is slightly limiting for those users who have larger multimedia collections. The Full-HD IPS display offers great viewing angles and crisp image quality for all your web browsing and video streaming needs. You also get a great 97% sRGB gamut coverage, which makes the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 great for designers and photo editors. Something that is slightly disappointing is that you don’t get a backlit keyboard, which is something that we usually expect from ultrabooks.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.86 lbs

Pros

  • Great battery life
  • Thin and light SSD
  • Intel Skylake processor
  • Full-HD matte display

Cons

  • RAM cannot be upgraded
  • No full size HDMI port
  • No backlit keyboard

Summary

The ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 offers users a thin and light laptop that can easily be carried on a daily basis. But the RAM cannot be upgraded and you will have to settle for the installed 8GB of memory.

Best All-Purpose High-End Laptop

Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A 15.4-inchApple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A 15.4-inch

While the new MacBook Pro was met with criticism from even some of the most hardcore Apple fans, it still remains a piece of brilliant forward thinking design. The new MacBook Pro shares the same stylish aluminim unibody design of its predecessor, however Apple have made it almost 40% thinner than the previous model. It now measures a mere 0.61-inches thick and it weighs in at a super light 4.02 pounds, bringing this MacBook Pro onto the border of Ultrabook territory. Sharing the same powerful Intel Core i7-68200HQ processor as some high-end gaming laptops, the Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A will have no issues running even the most demanding audio or design applications on the market. However, Apple only offer the Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A with 16GB of RAM that is not upgradable. This is something that we have seen with other Apple products such as the iMac and the Mac Mini, which feature integrated memory modules. So bad news for those who were hoping to upgrade the memory of their brand new MacBook Pro to either 24GB or 32GB. The most talked about feature of the new MacBook Pro is the all new Touch Bar with integrated Touch ID. The new Touch Bar will now display new shortcuts depending on what applications you are working in and promises to speed up your workflow at home or at the office. The integrated Touch ID allows you to quickly and safely approve Apple Pay transactions and will allow you to quickly switch user accounts and login securely. Apple have also given the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A a beefier AMD Radeon Pro 455 GPU with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory. It also features automatic graphics switching to switch to the Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU to conserve battery life when using less demanding applications. The Achilles heel of the Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A is the fact that it no longer features any legacy ports or Apple’s MagSafe charging port. Charging is now handled by one of the four Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3.1 Type-C) ports. This will also mean purchasing adapters or a dock in order to use standard USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices or to connect an HDMI cable.

Specs

  • 15.4 inch, 2880 x 1800 pixels (IPS)
  • Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 4.02 lbs

Pros

  • Touch Bar with Touch ID
  • Powerful CPU
  • Dedicated AMD graphics
  • Large SSD
  • Brilliant Retina display
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • No standard ports
  • No MagSafe port
  • Non-upgradable RAM
  • Price
  • No SD card slot

Summary

The Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MLW82LL/A is a powerful MacBook Pro for the power user, however with a hefty price tag and no legacy ports it might not be the MacBook that we hoped for as everyday users.

Top Gaming Laptop Under $500

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG 15.6-inch

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG features the most powerful graphics card and is available in our sub-$500 gaming laptop guide. While it is priced slightly over $500, the increased performance is well worth every cent. The NVIDIA GeForce 940MX will allow you to play Battlefield 4, Star Wars Battlefront and Overwatch on medium settings. And Diablo III, Counter Strike: Go and FIFA 2016 will run on ultra settings with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is a budget friendly gaming laptop that offers great hardware at an extremely attractive price. The 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor and 8GB of RAM will cope with day-to-day tasks with relative ease. The 8GB of DDR4 can easily be upgraded to 16GB and you can install a total of 32GB if you really want to push it to the max. If you are on a budget then we recommend a second 8GB RAM module from Kingston. But if you want better performance then we recommend replacing the installed Kingston Value RAM module for either the Kingston HyperX Impact (2x 8GB) kit, the G.SKILL Ripjaws (2x 8GB) kit or the CORSAIR Vengeance (2x 8GB) kit. These three RAM kits offer good performance and will run at 2133MHz. While many similarly priced laptops offer the NVIDIA GeForce 940M processor, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is equipped with the GeForce 940MX graphics card. The 940MX offers 20% better performance and will allow for casual gaming and will run most modern games on low to medium settings while still offering good frame rates. While the solid state drive offers lightning fast Windows 10 boot and game loading speeds, the 256GB of storage space is quite small for modern gaming titles. But luckily the installed SSD is an M.2 module and Acer has left the SATA slot open so that you can install a 2.5-inch hard drive. So you can install a second 250GB SSD to keep the performance on par with the installed storage, or you can install a larger yet slower 1TB mechanical hard drive. While many laptops under $600 are still being offered with maximum resolutions of 1366 x 786, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG has a Full-HD display. The display offers good viewing angles, vivid colors and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. A big draw card for the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is its amazing battery life, users can expect up to 12 hours off of a single charge while browsing the web or working in Word, although expect that life reduced when gaming.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 12 hours battery life
  • 5.27 lbs

Pros

  • SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 940MX GPU
  • Excellent battery life
  • Price
  • USB Type-C

Cons

  • Limited storage space
  • Plain design

Summary

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is a budget friendly gaming laptop that offers powerful hardware at an extremely attractive price. The storage space is limited to just 256GB and we recommend upgrading to a bigger drive.

Top Gaming Laptop Under $1000

ASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inchASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inch

While many gaming laptops feature aggressive stylings and are usually quite bulky, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is quite different. Featuring a sleek aluminum design, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is thin and light for a gaming machine, making it great for gamers after a portable solution. Sporting a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of RAM, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 will make light work of your daily tasks. But for more intensive apps we recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 16GB. While you can simply and cheaply add another 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 module, adding higher frequency RAM such as the G.SKILL Ripjaws 3000MHz (2x 8GB) kit will allow for better gaming performance. The dual cooling fans keep the ASUS K501UW-AB78 cool when under load, but users can expect to hear the fans slightly when pushing the laptops hardware. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The ASUS K501UW-AB78 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will run Fallout 4 and Overwatch on ultra settings, but more intensive games will have to be run on medium and high settings to maintain good frame rates. One feature that is missing from the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is the addition of USB 3.1 Type-C. This would have helped to future proof the laptop as you could easily connect an External GPU dock to run more powerful desktop graphics cards. While some of its competitors are still offering smaller 256GB SSD’s, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 comes standard with a 512GB SSD for double the storage space. This will come in handy as newer games have dramatically increased in size over the last few years. The Full-HD display offers rich colors and will allow you to run most games with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The display also offers great viewing angles, but it is slightly small for gaming as a desktop replacement machine. But you will easily be able to connect a monitor or TV via the HDMI port for a much more pleasurable gaming experience or for enjoying 4K videos and movies.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.75 hours battery life
  • 4.4 lbs

Pros

  • Skylake processor
  • Dual fan cooling system
  • GeForce GTX 960M
  • Crisp Full-HD display

Cons

  • No USB 3.1 Type-C
  • No IPS display
  • No optical drive

Summary

The ASUS K501UW-AB78 is a sleek gaming laptop that offers great hardware for gamers who are constantly on the go. But the lack of a USB 3.1 Type-C port means that it is not as future proof as some of its competitors.

Top High-end Gaming Laptop

ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inchASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inch

When it comes to high-end gaming laptops, there are only a few names that are worth considering and ASUS is one of them. Their Republic Of Gaming (ROG) laptops have always been some of the most sought after laptops when it comes to serious gamers. One of their latest offerings is the new ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 and like many of their products, it does not disappoint. While it is not the thinnest or lightest laptop, it is well below the industry standard when it comes to 15.6-inch gaming laptops. Powering this beast is a Skylake based Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which combined will easily offer lag free gaming and enough power for designers and video editors. While the installed RAM performs well, you can always increase the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71’s performance by installing higher frequency RAM. We recommend either the CORSAIR Vengeance 3000MHz (2x 8GB) kit or the G.SKILL Ripjaws 3000MHz (2x 8GB) kit. ASUS have jumped on board with the new 10-series range of NVIDIA graphics cards and the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 features the GeForce GTX 1070 laptop edition. The GTX 1070 outperforms its predecessor and its performance is on par with the GTX 980M. The new Pascal architecture offers superior performance when it comes to VR gaming and will make the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 more future proof as some of the other ROG laptops. To store all of your games and multimedia files, the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 comes with both a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive and a superfast 256GB M.2 solid state drive. But with games ever increasing in size, you will have to choose which games you want to install on the SSD. You can remove the M.2 solid state drive and replace it with a larger 512GB or 1TB SSD if want all of your games to load with lightning fast speeds. The 15.6-inch Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles and rich colors thanks to its In-plane switching technology. You also get G-SYNC which allows the display to synchronize its refresh rate with the GTX 1070’s rendering rate.

Specs

  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.60GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (Laptop) 8GB Dedicated [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 4.8 lbs

Pros

  • Intel Skylake processor
  • G-SYNC display panel
  • HDD and SSD combo
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
  • Thin and light

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • Smaller keyboard
  • Prone to heating up

Summary

The ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 is a thin and light gaming laptop that boasts the latest NVIDIA GTX 1070 graphics card. But the thinner design does mean that it is more prone to heating up than some of the thicker ROG laptops.

Best Laptop Under $300

HP 15-F222WM 15.6-inchHP 15-F222WM 15.6-inch

The HP 15-F222WM replaces the 2015 HP 15-F211WM in HP’s line-up of affordable laptops. Priced under $300, the HP 15-F222WM is best suited for home or office use. While its Intel Pentium N3540 processor and 4GB of RAM will easily cope with tasks such as Skype, Internet browsing and sending emails, it is slightly underpowered for more intensive tasks. You might want to consider either an Intel i3 or an Intel i5 based laptop if you intend on working with more intensive apps. Like its predecessor, you get the same 500GB mechanical hard drive which offers a decent amount storage space. However, the entry-level hard drive will mean slower Windows boot speeds and your apps will take a bit longer to load. You will be able to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD, however these are still expensive for the amount of storage space that they offer. One of the key features of the HP 15-F222WM is the touchscreen display. Despite the laptop’s low price, the touchscreen is fairly responsive and this will allow you to easily navigate around Windows or your favorite web browser. However, the HP 15-F222WM still features the same budget display panel which offers a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 and average viewing angles. While the display does not offer Full-HD resolution, it will still allow you to stream your favorite series or movies in 720p quality. A minor drawback is that the HP 15-F222WM does not feature Bluetooth connectivity. While this is not a train smash, it would have been nice for HP to include it in there updated laptop.

Cons

  • Slightly underpowered
  • Average keyboard
  • Poor webcam quality
  • No 5GHz WiFi connectivity

The HP 15-F222WM is a budget friendly laptop for home or office use. However, if you are looking for a more powerful machine that does more than basic tasks, then this laptop is not right for you.

Lenovo Ideapad 110s 80WG0001US 11.6-inchLenovo Ideapad 110s 80WG0001US 11.6-inch

The Lenovo Ideapad 110s 80WG0001US is an updated version of the Lenovo IdeaPad 100s and now features a more powerful Intel Pentium processor. At a light 2.53-pounds and with its compact 11.6-inch display, this laptop is great for students or for those who are constantly on the go. While the older 100s offered an impressive 9 hour battery life, the new 110s only manages 7 hours off of a single charge. This might have to do with the Pentium processor that has replaced the Atom processor on the 100s. While the Intel Pentium N3060 processor is an improvement over the older Atom processor, it is still not suited for more intensive applications. However, if sending emails, using Skype and browsing the web are all you need it for, then this PC will be more than enough for you. The 2GB of RAM will allow you to use most applications, however it cannot be upgraded and it will struggle with resource hungry applications such as Google Chrome. The 32GB of eMMC flash memory is limited to only 17GB with Windows 10 installed, but users can install a MicroSD card to expand the 110’s storage space. We recommend a high speed 128GB MicroSD card or a good cloud-based storage solution. Like most Windows laptops in this category, you will get a 1 year subscription to Office 365 Personal, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. The display is not the brightest or the most vivid, however at under $200 dollars we can’t expect a Full-HD display.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home

Pros

  • Price
  • Good battery life
  • Three USB ports
  • Fast SSD storage
  • Clean and portable design

Cons

  • No optical drive
  • Slightly underpowered hardware
  • Limited storage space
  • Dim display

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad 110s 80WG0001US is an affordable laptop for home and school use. However, the hardware is slightly underpowered for heavier use.

best-chromebooksBest Chromebooks of 2016 and 2017

ChromeOS has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2009 as an open-source project called the Chromium OS project. ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6-inchASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6-inch

If you are looking for a strong and sturdy Chromebook that can handle the abuses of the classroom, then the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 is well worth considering. It has been specially designed with nano-molding technology to ensure that it is tough as nails and the rubber bumpers help to protect this Chromebook from impact in unforeseen accidents. It has even been tested by ASAS to endure a 3.9 foot drop. ASUS have also given the Chromebook C202SA-YS02 a spill-resistant keyboard to ensure that this Chromebook will still function in the event of an unforeseen spillage while it is being used. The 180-degree hinged display allows for easier viewing while in group discussions and gives the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 a bit more flexibility when relaxing with your feet up on the sofa. Powering the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 is an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of RAM, which combined are more than powerful enough for most Chrome OS tasks. While the standard Microsoft Office cannot be installed on Chrome OS, you will be able to use Google Docs, QuickOffice and Microsoft Office Online for all of your word processing needs. The 16GB of storage will allow for a handful of applications and documents to be stored on the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02, however, it has been designed to be used in conjunction with Google’s Drive cloud storage. You get 100GB of cloud storage space for 2 years from Google, thereafter it will cost $1.99 a month to keep the same amount of storage. If you would prefer an offline solution, then we recommend purchasing a 128GB MicroSD card and installing it into the MicroSD slot for a more permanent storage solution.

Best Chromebook under $300

Acer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM 14-inchAcer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM 14-inch

The Acer Chromebook 14’s all-aluminum chassis make it look and feel like it costs much more than its modest price tag. This makes it stand out amongst competitors, and despite the metal design, it remains light enough to carry around easily. Sporting a 1920 x 1080p resolution, its display is sharp and reproduces colors accurately. However, it is not bright enough for comfortable outdoor use, and its color palette is middling at best, but understandable at this price point. Moving on to input devices, the keyboard offers nice feedback and is well spaced out, but we would have liked deeper travel. It is by no means bad, but it tires you out faster than other keyboards. The touchpad, however, is smooth, accurate, and correctly registers multi-touch gestures. Acer fit an Intel Celeron N3160 processor and backed it up with 4GB of low power RAM. Office apps run like a breeze, and there is no visible lag during multitasking. Intel Celeron processors are also designed to be as efficient as possible, and this allows the Chromebook a long 10-hour battery life that will last any school day. Unfortunately, the integrated graphics will not tolerate anything except light gaming. This might actually be a good thing, seeing as how you should be studying rather than playing computer games.

Specs

  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Chrome OS
  • 12 hours battery life
  • 3.42 lbs

Pros

  • Premium metal design
  • Sturdy build
  • Full-HD screen
  • Long battery life
  • Great speakers
  • Solid performance

Cons

  • Shallow keyboard
  • Dim light
  • Underpowered processor
  • No SD card slot

Summary

The Acer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM offers much more than its modest price tag suggests, and with its long battery life and compact design, it makes for a great carry-on device.
