Best High-end Samsung Laptops

When listing the top five manufacturers of premium laptops today, it is hard not to place Samsung in the top. For quite a while now, Samsung has been consistent with its beautiful and well built ultrabooks. For example, the ATIV products in particular have done pretty well in the market and are coveted by customers everywhere especially because of their uniquely sleek, light and razor-thin design. Here’s the deal: the good folks at Samsung are not all just about looks. These ultrabooks come packed with high-end hardware meant to comfortably handle any computing task you throw at them. As expected however, buying one will leave a dent on your wallet and value for the money is probably seen by users who are more keen on design than on performance. Thankfully, Samsung has a delightful line of Chromebooks that compromises a little on looks and a bit more on performance to keep prices conveniently affordable.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Blade NP900X5L-K02US 15-inchSamsung ATIV Book 9 Blade NP900X5L-K02US 15-inch

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP900X5L-K02US was built to be a great all-purpose laptop that’s easy to carry around. The chassis, made of both aluminum and magnesium, feels and looks premium while being significantly lighter than most 15-inch laptops, apart from the freakishly light LG Gram. The Gram’s all-magnesium design cannot compete regarding sturdiness, however. With a Skylake i7, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, it plows through most tasks with ample multitasking capabilities. You might not want to store all your media files on it, however. Otherwise, the SSD will be full in no time. The Full-HD display is crisp and produces vibrant colors, albeit a bit inaccurate. It offers excellent viewing angles, and it is bright enough for outdoor use. The glass touchpad is one of the best you’ll find on a Windows machine; it is both responsive and accurate. The keyboard, on the other hand, has shallow travel and weak feedback making typing for long periods tiresome. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP900X5L-K02US will go for over 7 hours on a single charge which is much better than most mainstream 15 inch laptops. However, its slim design limits its connectivity options to 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB-C port, a power jack, headphone/microphone port, WLAN port, HDMI port and a microSD card slot.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 2.8 lbs

Pros

  • Strong performance
  • Vibrant display
  • Ultra-light weight
  • Great touchpad

Cons

  • Color reproduction not very accurate
  • Keyboard a bit shallow

Summary

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Blade NP900X5L-K02US 15-inch is a portable large screen laptop that is great for both work and play.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Pro NP940Z5L-X01US 15.6-inchSamsung ATIV Book 9 Pro NP940Z5L-X01US 15.6-inch

The ATIV Book 9 Pro NP940Z5L-X01US is Samsung’s answer to the MacBook Pro. It boasts powerful specs, an Ultra HD 15.6- inch touch screen and a discrete GPU. The ATIV Book 9 Pro was designed with a traditional performance mindset. The aluminum unibody makes the laptop very rigid. It is not a convertible, which allows it to pack on high-end parts like the blazing fast Quad-Core i7-6700HQ processor and the NVIDIA GTX 950M GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM. It comes with 8GB of DDR3 RAM for moderate multitasking requirements and a fast 256GB SSD, though you might need an external hard drive for additional storage. Being 4K, the screen is amazing to look at with vivid colors, wide viewing angles and is quite bright making its outdoor visibility good. The keyboard is comfortable to type on for extended periods and comes with a numeric keypad and dedicated Home, PgUp, PgDn and End keys on the right edge. The touchpad is accurate and responsive, rivaling even the excellent touchpad on the MacBook Pro. The major shortcoming of the ATIV Book 9 Pro is the poor battery life, lasting only about 6 hours, meaning you may have to carry your charger if you are on the move. Also, the discrete GPU though welcomed, is underwhelming as compared to the beefier 960M found on its competitors like the Dell XPS 15.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 4.45 lbs

Pros

  • Good performance
  • Bright and vibrant 4K display
  • Great quad-speaker setup
  • Sleek, professional design
  • Rigid aluminum frame
  • Touchpad that rivals even the MacBook Pro’s

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • Expensive
  • Discrete graphics could be better

Summary

The ATIV Book 9 Pro NP940Z5L-X01US is a great all-purpose laptop with excellent performance and design but with less than average battery life.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus NP940X3G-K05US 13.3-inchSamsung ATIV Book 9 Plus NP940X3G-K05US 13.3-inch

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus NP940X3G-K05US brings a new meaning to the word premium. Its anodized Mineral Ash Black finish, silver brushed-metal rim and slim figure all scream elegance. Open the lid and you are presented with an immersive 13.3-inch QHD+ touchscreen display that delivers razor-sharp text and bright, vibrant images. It offers excellent outdoor visibility and viewing angles, though its color accuracy could use some improvement. The Haswell i7 processor is a bit outdated, but to be honest, you really couldn’t tell. Everything runs smoothly even with multiple browser tabs and programs open; the 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD really deliver. During gaming, the integrated graphics often struggles to keep up with QHD+ resolution, even on older titles. It does not mind multimedia use, however. The Book 9 Plus’ keyboard is spacious, has deep travel, and offers good feedback. The touchpad is large, smooth and very responsive. You’d expect the speakers to be mediocre at best on such a thin laptop, but no, they actually push out a lot of decibels with surprisingly good quality. It also runs a solid 8 hours on a single charge. However, the 720p webcam is just average, and only a few ports are included for connectivity.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 3200 x 1800 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 7.5 hours battery life
  • 3 lbs

Pros

  • Elegant design
  • Powerful speakers
  • Great keyboard
  • Gorgeous QHD+ touchscreen

Cons

  • 4th gen processor a bit slower than faster models
  • Average Webcam
  • Few Connectivity Ports

Summary

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus NP940X3G-K05US is a beautiful ultraportable with a great display, and good battery life fit for traveling professionals.

Samsung Notebook 9 Spin NP940X3L-K01US 13.3 inchSamsung Notebook 9 Spin NP940X3L-K01US 13.3 inch

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Spin is the smaller version of the Book 9 Pro, it is basically the Windows version of the MacBook Air. Just like its sibling, it is made of a rigid all-aluminum frame that goes through rigorous reliability tests to ensure maximum strength. It looks amazing; it is slender, compact and gives you a premium feel. The touchscreen and 360 hinge allow you to use the laptop in various modes. Inside, you find a dual-core Skylake processor and 8GB RAM that give great multitasking capabilities with no visible lag. The 256GB SSD cuts down on load times and provides ample storage for documents and a few programs. However, integrated graphics will not play many newer games at acceptable settings, especially not at the ATIV’s native resolution. The 13.3-inch 3200 x 1800 QHD+ touchscreen display simply spoils you, producing vibrant images and crisp text. It has wide viewing angles, and its outdoor mode almost doubles the brightness, providing excellent visibility. The keyboard is nice and responsive, but the touchpad is the major highlight; with high accuracy and responsiveness, the ATIV series touchpads might just be the best on all Windows laptops. The longer frame design allows for more ports to offer more connectivity options as compared to older Samsung laptops. The battery is rated at about 7 hours of use which is a good deal less than most competing laptops.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 3200 x 1800 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 7.5 hours battery life
  • 2.87 lbs

Pros

  • Gorgeous QHD+ display
  • Excellent touchpad
  • Portable design
  • Great outdoor visibility

Cons

  • Subpar battery life

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Ultra NP930X2K-K01US 12.2 inchSamsung ATIV Book 9 Ultra NP930X2K-K01US 12.2 inch

Few products excel at pushing portability to the limit like the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Ultra NP930X2K-K01US. At first look, it cuts a slim and subtle profile. Silver trim outlines its fingerprint-resistant Imperial Black finish, and the full-aluminum chassis makes it feel solid. At only 0.46 inches thick and weighing a feathery 2.09 pounds, the ATIV Book 9 Ultra can be carried around with ease all day and is a deserving travel companion. The display is a WQXGA panel with a remarkable 2560 x 1600 resolution gives great picture quality and accurate colors. Viewing angles are impressively wide with negligible color shift. Additionally, Samsung has generously included useful brightness-control modes like Outdoor mode which increases brightness to a maximum for outdoor use., and Secret Screen mode which lowers brightness for more privacy in crowded quarters. The keyboard, though lacking backlighting is well proportioned and offers a generally easy typing experience. For such a small device, the ATIV Book 9 Ultra’s two 1.5 watt speakers output impressive clear audio. Connectivity is fair, with 2 USBx3.0 ports, a micro-SD multi-card slot, a micro-HDMI port and a mic/headset combo jack. 802.11ac Wi-Fi works well and a USB dongle is also included for wired Ethernet access. With a 900MHz Intel Core M processor, 8GB RAM and an Intel HD Graphics 5300 GPU, the ATIV Book 9 Ultra will provide enough everyday performance for the professional user but will struggle with extremely demanding software and modern 3D games. Nonetheless, the on-board 256GB SSD performs well to offer fast general system functions. From a full charge, this unit gives up to 6.2 hours battery life which doesn’t do well to match the 9-10 hour average for ultrabooks in its class.

Specs

  • 12.1 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 6.25 hours battery life
  • 2.09 lbs

Pros

  • Extremely lightweight
  • Great display
  • Good sound output

Cons

  • Modest performance
  • Non-backlit keyboard
  • Non-touch screen

Summary

Selling the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Ultra NP930X2K-K01US as a good value for money is tough, but if you’re looking for a beautifully designed portable ultrabook will a splendid display, it is well worth considering.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Blade NP930X2K-K04US 12.2-inchSamsung ATIV Book 9 Blade NP930X2K-K04US 12.2-inch

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP930X2K-K04US is a super-slim and lightweight ultraportable that is in direct competition with Apple’s 12-inch MacBook, they share almost all the same specs except that the latter runs on Mac OS. It features a slim all aluminum design that makes it both rigid and attractive. At its core, runs a dual-core Intel Core M-5Y31 that trots along at 0.9GHZ during less intensive tasks, but boosts itself to 2.4GHZ during taxing loads. It comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to allow ample headroom for multitasking and short load times. The 12.2-inch WQXGA renders beautiful videos and images with high color accuracy, and rated at a whopping 700nit; it offers excellent outdoor visibility. The graphics department is run by the integrated Intel HD 5300; it only allows light gaming. The keyboard is comfortable to type on; the keys have average travel but with good feedback. The touchpad is a bit unresponsive to multitouch, however. For connectivity, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 NP930X2K-K04US offers 2 USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI, a charging port, and a headphone/mic jack. This may seem limited but is actually commendable for a 12-inch laptop, and in comparison, the MacBook offers only a single USB-C port for all needs. The battery lasts slightly above 6 hours on a single charge, which is below average for ultraportables and way below the MacBook’s 11 hours.

Samsung NP900X3K-S02US ATIV 13.3-inchSamsung NP900X3K-S02US ATIV 13.3-inch

Samsung have created a lovely stylish product with the NP900X3K-S02US ATIV. It is encased in Imperial Black aluminum that is smooth to the touch. Designed to be completely fanless, the sleek casing is uninterrupted through to the underside, giving it a solid premium feel. At 2.1 pounds and measuring 0.5 inches thin, the ATIV can easily be carried around in a bag all day. The display is a 13.3-inch non-touch Ultra-HD (3200 x 1800) IPS panel that renders videos and photos exceptionally well with wide viewing angles. Keys on the ATIV’s keyboard dip slightly in the middle generally making typing easier but doesn’t serve as a solid touchscreen replacement. Sound output is clear and balanced as a result of its Wolfson WM5102 UHQA lossless audio player that pumps out quality sound. Ports are relatively scarce in this ATIV, with just 2 USB 3.0 ports, a micro HDMI port and a headset/mic jack combo. 802.11bgn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 facilitate internet connectivity and file sharing respectively. Powered by a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5-5200U, the NP900X3K-S02US ATIV runs swiftly and smoothly and the included. 8GB RAM means multitasking is seamless. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 GPU performs well with light gaming but will struggle with anything more taxing. For secondary storage, a 128GB SSD is on-board to provide speedy file transfer and split-second boot-up times. However, users demanding more storage space will have to dig deeper into their pockets for 256GB and 512GB SSD configurations. Samsung claim an 11- hour battery life on the Samsung NP900X3K-S02US ATIV which is remarkable, although 9-10 hours is expected in real life situations.

Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US 11.6-inchSamsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US 11.6-inch

For its price, the Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US is surprisingly sturdy. The design doesn’t differ much from last year’s Chromebook 2 Series, but the metal frame has been ditched for a plastic casing seemingly to lower the price. The result of this is a less showy but solid device. Weighing only 2.5 pounds and measuring 0.7 inches in its thickest spot, the Samsung Chromebook 3 can be carried around with ease making it suitable for travel enthusiasts as a trusty road companion. At an average 1366 by 768 resolution, the 11.6-inch display is not necessarily spectacular, although the picture quality is decent and the colors fairly accurate. The screen features an anti-glare panel which enables viewing in the bright outdoors and the hinges rotate to 180 degrees making it easier to share the screen. With the Chromebook 3, Samsung have improved the keyboard’s ergonomics, with wider keys for easier typing. Port choices are limited at only 1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 port, an HDMI-out port and a headset-combo jack. The 802.11ac dual-band new generation wireless card offers improved signal strength and better transfer speeds. An Intel Celeron N3050 processor powers the Samsung Chromebook 3 with a clock speed of 1.6GHz, 2MB cache and 2 physical cores. 4GB SDRAM complement the CPU to give decent performance for seamless web surfing and document processing. As expected, storage space is limited with 16GB only enough for short-run file storage. Thankfully, Google provides every Chromebook with 100GB free cloud storage. The battery will hold a charge for up to 11 hours, enough juice to sail through a day’s workload.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (IPS)

Cons

Samsung Chromebook 2 XE503C32-K01US 13.3-inchSamsung Chromebook 2 XE503C32-K01US 13.3-inch

Unlike many Chromebooks that justify cheap plastic cases with affordability measures, Samsung designers took their time to give a well-engineered product that looks better than even pricier mid-range laptops. The leather-like finish on the back of the lid does well to avoid fingerprints, and gives good grip whilst carrying the laptop around. Metal reinforcement across the entire body make it solid and durable. Only few can match the Chromebook 2’s 0.65 inches thickness and weighing just 3.1 pounds, portability is a non-issue. The display is a bright 13.3-inch Full-HD panel with 1920 x 1080 resolution offering great picture quality and fairly accurate colors. Keys on the keyboard are evenly spaced out and offer a comfortable typing experience. The touchpad, albeit of relatively small surface area is accurate and responsive for seamless cursor navigation. For ports, the Chromebook’s side has 1 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 2.0, HDMI, microSD slot and a headphone/mic jack. Connectivity is facilitated by 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Under the hood the Samsung Chromebook 2 XE503C32-K01US packs a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5800 2GHz processor, which although not as efficient as the new range of Core M processors in Chromebooks today is still a solid performer for basic web surfing and document processing. A 4GB DDR3 RAM module and a 16GB SSD offer primary and secondary memory respectively. Thanks to the low power processor, the Chromebook 2 offers an impressive 8 hours and 30 minutes battery life on moderate computing.

Specs

  • Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5800 [View Benchmarks]

  • 4GB DDR3L RAM
  • 16GB SSD
  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels

Pros

  • Great ultra-thin light design
  • Sharp, full-HD display
  • Solid build
  • Decent battery life

Cons

  • Slower performance than Intel Chromebooks
  • microSD card instead of full SD card slot

Summary

Although released almost two years ago, the Samsung Chromebook 2 XE503C32-K01US does well to compete with the new crop of Chromebooks. A unique design, decent screen, and promising performance contribute to a great product for the Chromebook lover at a very fair price.

Best Samsung 2-in-1

Samsung Galaxy Pro S (W700NZKAXAR) 12-inchSamsung Galaxy Pro S (W700NZKAXAR) 12-inch

The Samsung Galaxy Pro S succeeds in bringing together immersive entertainment and efficient productivity. Style is evident with its thin display and sleek casing. The aluminum and polycarbonate chassis makes it feel solid and suggests impressive build quality. The magnetically detachable keyboard is uniquely designed to sit in two positions, behind the screen or laid down as a traditional laptop’s keyboard. On its own, the screen is only 0.25 inches thick and weighs 1.52 pounds which makes tablet-mode friendly. The Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Pro S outputs vivid colors and sharp details making it a stellar multimedia device. The display’s brightness is also sufficient enough for outdoor use, although it will suffer reflection in very bright sunlight. For short and casual typing spells, the Galaxy Pro S’s keyboard works well, but things can get a bit challenging with lengthy typing. Keys are shallow and closely packed increasing errors and reducing overall typing speed. The touchpad is accurate enough and has a good feel although users with large fingers might find its surface area insufficient. Audio output goes beyond all expectation, with the Galaxy Pro S’s small stereo speakers delivering loud clear sound. Ports are scarce with only one USB-C 3.1 port and a headphone jack but the 802.11ac wireless works well to offer speedy internet connectivity. Although not a speedy performer, this device offers enough power for basic multitasking. The on-board Intel Core M3 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD work well together to give decent everyday performance for productive and casual use. However, armed with integrated Intel HD 315 graphics, the Pro S is only limited to light gaming. Lasting 6 hours and 46 minutes on Laptop Mag’s Battery test, this product’s battery competes decently with other detachable devices in its class.

Specs

  • 12 inch, pixels

  • 10.5 hours battery life
  • 1.49 lbs

Pros

  • Great Super AMOLED display
  • Elegant thin and lightweight design
  • Solid performance

Cons

  • Limited ports

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy Pro S offers an excellent Super AMOLED display and good performance for a fair price. However, with its shallow keyboard and limited ports, it is perhaps destined to please tablet and 2-in-1 enthusiasts more than traditional laptop fans.
