The gaming industry has grown exponentially in the last 2 decades and is now an over $40 billion a year industry with PC gaming being responsible for a large part of that. The problem is that being able to run all the latest games on full graphical settings is expensive and with a high end gaming laptop ranging anywhere between $1000 – $2500 many users simply can’t afford or cant justify spending large amounts of money on a gaming machine. We at Laptopninja have put together a comprehensive guide to budget gaming laptops for under $300 to help users who are just getting into gaming or are casual gamers and are victim to tough budget constraints. The following laptops should, in most cases, run older games on medium settings and newer games on very low graphical settings at very least. At this price range expecting 60fps at 1080p resolutions is out of the question however if you are happy with great day to day performance and some light gaming on the side then read on, we may just help you find your next device.

HP 15-F222WM 15.6-inchHP 15-F222WM 15.6-inch

The HP 15-F222WM replaces the 2015 HP 15-F211WM in HP’s line-up of affordable laptops. Priced under $300, the HP 15-F222WM is best suited for home or office use. While its Intel Pentium N3540 processor and 4GB of RAM will easily cope with tasks such as Skype, internet browsing and sending emails, it is slightly underpowered for more intensive tasks. You might want to consider either an Intel i3 or an Intel i5 based laptop if you intend on working with more intensive apps. Like its predecessor you get the same 500GB mechanical hard drive which offers a decent amount storage space. However, the entry-level hard drive will mean slower Windows boot speeds and your apps will take a bit longer to load. You will be able to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD, however these are still expensive for the amount of storage space that they offer. If you love classic titles such as Warcraft 3 or Age of Empires 2, then you can enjoy some casual gaming on the HP 15-F222WM. However, don’t expect to play the latest games on this system as the Bay Trail GPU doesn’t offer the necessary power for these titles. If you enjoy browser based games, then you will be pleased to know that the HP 15-F222WM features a touchscreen display which will come in handy while you build your empire in Forge of Empires or getting to that next level on Candy Crush.

ASUS VivoBook X540SA BPD0602V 15.6-inchASUS VivoBook X540SA BPD0602V 15.6-inch

While most budget 15.6-inch laptops weigh in at over 5 pounds, the ASUS VivoBook X540SA is noticeably lighter and weighs in at just 4.41 pounds. Its sturdy plastic construction is quite rugged and will easily withstand being carried around on a daily basis. The battery life is also a lot better than some of its competitors and some users have reported run times of over 7 hours off of a full charge. Realistically you can look at 5-6 hours of web browsing or word processing and 3-4 hours while streaming videos. Powered by an Intel Quad Core Pentium N3700 processor and 4GB of RAM, the ASUS VivoBook X540SSA will easily cope with basic tasks at home or at the office. But the installed 4GB of RAM is soldered to the mainboard and you will only be able to install another 4GB RAM module. But 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient for the needs of most basic apps and for the limitations of the Pentium processor. While the processor ranks slightly lower than the one in the HP-15 F222WM, the GPU is slightly better. However this still won’t be powerful enough to run newer games, as even some 2009 releases only run at 6-8 frames per second. If all you are after are some classics such as the original Red Alert, Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2, then the HD Graphics Braswell GPU will cope just fine. If browser based games are more your thing, then you will easily be able to enjoy these in your favorite web browser. The display offers impressive image quality for video playback or you can comfortably stream videos at 720p. The superfast USB 3.1 Type-C port allows you to connect to a host of next generation devices and peripherals, which helps in future proofing the ASUS VivoBook X540SA.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 4.41 lbs

Pros

  • Price
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Decent battery life
  • Light

Cons

  • 4GB of onboard RAM can’t be removed
  • Slightly underpowered processor
  • Slight keyboard and display flex
  • Only two full size USB ports

Summary

The ASUS VivoBook X540SA offers great value for money and even features a USB 3.1 Type-C port. But the Intel Pentium processor is slightly underpowered for more intensive multitasking and you only receive two full size USB ports.

Dell-Inspiron-i3541-2001BLK

Dell Inspiron i3541-2001BLK 15.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron i3541-2001BLK doesn’t have the grunt of a dedicated gaming laptop nor does it have the mean look or HD display. What it does have is incredible value for money and for the casual gamer on a budget could be a perfect match. Running an AMD 2.4 GHz Quad-Core A6-6310 APU the Inspiron is very capable of running day to day tasks such as browsing, streaming, email and word processing with relative ease although heavy multitasking is not advised. The APU features integrated AMD Radeon R4 (Codename Beema) which can run up to 800MHz and is based on based on the GCN architecture. The R4 utilises 128 shader cores across two Compute Units and does not have dedicated VRAM meaning it will need to borrow from the system memory(RAM). Surprisingly the R4 is capable of running newer games such as Metal Gear Solid V on the lowest settings at a frame rate of  26.2fps which is far from smooth but is still technically playable. Games such as Civilisation, Batman: Arkham Origins and F1 2014 had a playable 30 – 36fps on the lowest graphical settings and a resolution of 1024×768.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 6.5 hours battery life
  • 6 lbs

Pros

  • Fast AMD processor
  • Crisp and bright display
  • Good battery life
  • Affordable price

Cons

  • Bulky and heavy

Summary

A good performer for day to day tasks. Not as portable as some of its competitors but will see you through the day comfortably.

Lenovo B50-45 15.6-inch

In today’s tough economy many users find themselves having to sacrifice on performance in order to afford a computer. Thankfully as technology progresses older machines tend to drop in price and the Lenovo B50-45 offers incredible value for the money although it is painfully obvious that the manufacturer had to cut costs. Featuring a Quad-Core AMD A6 APU running at 1.8GHz and 4GB of RAM day to day computing should not be a problem and the AMD Radeon R4 GPU is able to handle the games of yesteryear and even a few modern titles as long as graphical settings are kept to a minimum. With keeping hardware costs down a few sacrifices had to be made such as audio quality and a very cheap plasticky keyboard. The plastic chassis doesn’t feel too sturdy either. While not the most premium device on the market the Lenovo B50-45 does offer users who would otherwise not be able to afford a laptop a foot in the door to the computing world.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • 5 hours battery life

  • Low Price
  • Good casual gaming performance
  • Good battery life

Cons

  • Windows 8.1 advertised but comes with Windows 7
  • Keyboard feels cheap
  • Poor sound quality

Summary

Offers good performance for basic tasks and older games however at this price the machine is anything but premium.
