Don’t expect to completely ditch your Windows or Mac laptop completely just yet as there are still some limitations imposed in ChromeOS, however if you need an incredibly fast and responsive machine to check email, browse the web and stream multimedia then read on, a Chromebook might just be for you. ASUS-C201PA-DS02-11.6-inchASUS C201PA-DS02 Chromebook 11.6-Inch

The ASUS C201PA-DS02 is an entry level Chromebook built for basic users who want a workable laptop for a very low price. With an attractive blue chassis with silver accented surfaces surrounding the keyboard, it mimics the design of the latest ultraportable. There is no inbuilt optical drive which helps keep the profile stay thin and the weight low. The construction is primarily plastic but it’s sturdy and feels well-made. The 11-inch screen is a glossy one with adequate pixels and a reasonably wide viewing angle for comfortable viewing. The keyboard has ample sized keys that are properly spaced to prevent accidental strokes. The trackpad is smooth and responsive. With over 10 hours of battery life, you won’t need to carry your charger with you all the time. ASUS has included a decent amount of ports by including two USB 2.0 ports, a Micro HDMI, an SD Card reader (MicroSD) and Bluetooth 4.0. Equipped with a Rockchip 1.8 GHz Processor and 4GB DDR3 RAM, it is clearly meant for the most basic of tasks and not hardcore gaming and designing. The hardware adequately handles document editing, video playback and web browsing on Chrome. However, the system might slow down when working with complex files such as multiple large PDFs. The storage space is limited with only 16GB of internal storage. But this can be extended with the use of a MicroSD card or users can upload files and documents to the Cloud via WiFi. But it’s better to purchase a large capacity SD card for your media files as it will allow for offline access to your files. If you want an easy to use laptop for documents and basic multimedia, the C201PA-DS02 is one of the cheapest Chromebooks available.

Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US 11.6-inchSamsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US 11.6-inch

The Samsung Chromebook 3 offers a sleek design with an all-black chassis and matte black covers. The Chromebook 3 has seen little cosmetic change and the external ports remain the same, but the internal hardware has been upgraded with an Intel Celeron N3050 processor that has a lower clock speed, but its smaller size, larger l2 cache and lower voltage offers more power with less heat and better battery performance. The RAM has been doubled and now sports 4GB of RAM for Chrome apps that require more memory. The 16GB of eMMC flash memory offers lighting fast data transfer speeds, but on the down side the 16GB of storage will fill up quickly. But Chromebooks are designed to operate in conjunction with Google’s online services and a Micro SD slot allows user to expand their storage space. The 11.6-inch display remains the same and offers good viewing angles, good colors and the same maximum resolution of 1366×768 as its predecessor. The pros of Chome OS is that it requires less powerful hardware to run apps compared to Windows 10 laptops in the same price bracket. Thanks to the low voltage hardware and the Chromebook 3 offers great battery life and can run for up to 11 hours off of a single charge, making it perfect for users on the go.

Acer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM 14-inchAcer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM 14-inch

The Acer Chromebook 14’s all-aluminum chassis make it look and feel like it costs much more than its modest price tag. This makes it stand out amongst competitors, and despite the metal design, it remains light enough to carry around easily. Sporting a 1920 x 1080p resolution, its display is sharp and reproduces colors accurately. However, it is not bright enough for comfortable outdoor use, and its color palette is middling at best, but understandable at this price point. Moving on to input devices, the keyboard offers nice feedback and is well spaced out, but we would have liked deeper travel. It is by no means bad, but it tires you out faster than other keyboards. The touchpad, however, is smooth, accurate, and correctly registers multi-touch gestures. Acer fit an Intel Celeron N3160 processor and backed it up with 4GB of low power RAM. Office apps run like a breeze, and there is no visible lag during multitasking. Intel Celeron processors are also designed to be as efficient as possible, and this allows the Chromebook a long 10-hour battery life that will last any school day. Unfortunately, the integrated graphics will not tolerate anything except light gaming. This might actually be a good thing, seeing as how you should be studying rather than playing computer games.

Specs

  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)

Cons

  • Shallow keyboard
  • Dim light

  • No SD card slot

The Acer Chromebook CB3-431-C5FM offers much more than its modest price tag suggests, and with its long battery life and compact design, it makes for a great carry-on device.

ASUS Chromebook Flip C100PA-DB02 10.1-inch ChromebookASUS Chromebook Flip C100PA-DB02 10.1-inch

Bridging the gap between tablet and Chromebook, the Asus Chromebook Flip C100PA-DB02 is a compact laptop that offers great performance for its low price. The Flip’s aluminum construction gives it a high quality look and feel and is a far cry from many of its competitors who only offer plastic constructions that feel cheap. But the brushed aluminum is not the only thing that sets it apart from its competitors, the Flip C100PA is also very thin and measures in at a mere 0.61-inches. While many Chromebooks use more costly Intel Celeron and Atom processors, the Asus Flip C100PA features a popular tablet and Smartphone processor from Rockchip. Users can expect performance that is on par with the NVIDIA Tegra K1 and the Rockchip RK3288 Quad Core processor offers good speeds while loading apps and web pages. The processor is backed by 4GB of RAM which is double that of most of its competitors, but storage space is average with 16GB of eMMC flash memory. But Google offers 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage for 2 years and a microSD slot allows users to expand their storage space for multimedia and work documents. Two full sized USB ports allow for users to connect devise and also allows for the expansion of the storage space via external storage devices. While other Chromebooks feature an average display size of over 11-inches, the Flip C100PA comes in slightly smaller at just 10.1-inches and has a lower resolution than most entry level Chromebooks. But with in-panel switching and a fairly responsive touchscreen, the display is still better than some of its competitors.

Specs

  • 10.1 inch, pixels (IPS)

Pros

  • 2-in-1 design

  • No USB 3.0

  • Only 16GB of storage

Lenovo 100s 80QN0009US 11.6-Inch ChromebookLenovo 100s Chromebook 80QN0009US 11.6-Inch

Chromebooks are a great alternative for users who have basic needs when it comes to their daily computing tasks. Chrome OS caters for apps such as Google Docs, Chrome, Gmail and Google Drive. Powered by an Intel Celeron N2840 Dual Core processor and 2GB of RAM, the Lenovo 100s Chromebook won’t win any awards in the hardware department, but they will run the Chrome operating system quite smoothly. The 2GB of RAM will be enough for day-to-day tasks, but apps that are more hardware intensive will feel a bit sluggish due to the limited amount of RAM. With only 16GB of storage space, users will have to rely on the 100GB of Cloud storage space that comes free with the Chromebook for two years or on the use of an external storage drive. While many of its competitors offer a MicroSD slot for additional storage space, the Lenovo 100s only has a full sized SD slot which is less suited as a permanent storage option. The two biggest complaints are the display quality and brightness levels and the hollow and tinny sound. But at under $200, it would be unreasonable to expect a Full-HD display with high-end sound. The biggest draw is the Lenovo 100s Chromebook’s outstanding battery life, users can comfortably expect 8 hours off of a single charge, or over 11 hours if they turn down the brightness of their display.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels

Pros

Cons

  • Display quality
  • Poor sound quality
  • Stiff trackpad

Summary

The Lenovo 100s Chromebook 80QN0009US is a great budget Chromebook for users with basic needs. The attractive price, long battery life and lightweight design make it a winner in the sub $200 category.

Acer Chromebook CB3-111-C670

Acer CB3-111-C670 11.6″ Chromebook

Acer has started to make a name for itself in the Chromebook market as of late. With multiple additions to their chromebook lineup the CB3-111-C670 is one of the most popular. Don’t let the 2.16Ghz Celeron processor and 2GB DDR3L RAM fool you, the CB3-111-C670 is lightning fast thanks to Google’s lightweight Chrome OS. Boot up times are around 7 seconds thanks to the 16GB SSD drive and with around 8 and a half hours of battery life this couldn’t be more suited for a on-the-go professional or student. There are a few limitations due to Chrome OS such as only being able to install apps off the Chrome web store as well as a lack of a file browser, however the tech savvy user will easily be able to install Linux to turn this Chromebook into a fully fledged laptop computer.

Best Premium Chromebooks

Google Pixel Chromebook

Google Pixel Chromebook

Sundar Pichai, the senior vice president of engineering in charge of Chrome and Android at Google, said that the goal behind the high-end Pixel model was “to push the boundary and build something premium” and push the boundary they did. Opting for a 6th generation Intel® Core™ i7-5500U clocked at 3.0GHZ running 16GB of DDR3L 1600MHz RAM and 64BG of flash-based storage. One of the most striking features of the Pixel is the gorgeous display, with a native resolution of 2560 x 1700 at 239 PPI and 400 nit brightness images and HD video are sharp and crystal clear. The display is also a very responsive touchscreen and has an incredibly wide viewing angle. The simple yet elegant premium metal finish, somewhat reminiscent of the Apple MacBook, gives way to a thin slit where the battery level is displayed with colourful LED lighting. The stereo speakers are well hidden under the keyboard and produce clear and loud sound. Google, in a move to future-proof the Pixel, have included two USB type C ports which are both capable of charging the Pixel at 60w and allow for 2 hours of battery on a 15 minute charge. And now for the critical points of which there is only one. The price! At around $1500, which is more than the Apple Macbook Air might I add, the price is incredibly high seeing that ChromeOS will never in the near future make use of all of that power. This machine is the cream of the Chromebook crop and is for ChromeOS enthusiasts who aren’t too concerned with budget.

Specs

  • 12.85 inch, 2560 x 1700 pixels (IPS)
  • Chrome OS
  • 12 hours battery life
  • 3.3 lbs

Pros

  • Sharp and bright 2K HD touchscreen display
  • Powerful specs
  • Incredible build quality
  • Extra long battery life
  • Stylish metallic design

Cons

  • 3:2 display not ideal for multitasking
  • Expensive
  • ChromeOS limitations

Summary

An incredibly well engineered, stylish Chromebook with a gorgeous display, however it’s blatantly overkill for ChromeOS and comes with a hefty price tag.

Acer-Chromebook-15-CB5-571-362Q-15.6-inch

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-362Q

The Chromebook 15 CB5-571-362Q is new and improved big brother of the Acer Chromebook 13 with a relatively unique 15-inch display usually not found on competing Chromebooks. It features an attractive all-white casing with a microweave pattern on the outer surfaces. Larger screen means larger dimension, leading to a total weight of nearly 5 pounds, which means it’s not as travel friendly as other Chromebooks. Despite a larger size, it uses the same keyboard as on its 13-inch Keyboards. The extra space near the ends of the keyboard is used by two high quality stereo speakers. In terms of connectivity it includes a USB 3.0 port, USB 2.0 port, a full-sized HDMI-out port, and an SD card slot. Despite its larger display, the battery life is excellent, running over 7 hours in half brightness with video streaming on. You will easily get the advertised 9 hours with light use. Its Intel Core i3-5005U processor offers a significant performance jump over its Celeron equipped competitors. It even beats the recently released Chromebook powered by the much hyped Tegra K-1 processor. The 4GB memory is largest you will get on any Chromebook, and it’s adequate for all Google applications. If save up some more, you can get more a powerful Windows laptop, but it won’t offer the same quality display and the same lengthy battery life. If you are a daily traveller who wants something for typing on the go, you’re probably better off with an 11-inch Chromebook. However, if you watch lots of movies at home and edit photos at work, the more powerful 15-inch Acer Chromebook 15 is without a doubt a top choice as an all-purpose home or office cloud PC.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 4.85 lbs

Pros

  • Full-HD screen
  • Fast processor
  • Clear and loud audio
  • Long battery life
  • Comfortable keyboard

Cons

Best Chromebooks under $300

Acer-Chromebook -15-CB5-571-C1DZ

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C1DZ Chromebook

If you are okay with running only Google applications on your laptop, the Acer Chromebook 15 is a nice alternative to 15-Inch Windows notebooks under $300. In fact, on day to day tasks like Google doc editing, web browsing and Youtube streaming, the Chromebook 15 performs on the same level as the top Windows 8 laptops of this category, plus it has a nicer looking frame and much longer battery life. Its all-white chassis looks bright and has woven pattern that add style and extra grip, but it picks up dirt easily. Images, texts and videos look sharp in its matte finished 1,920 x 1,080 pixel IPS display, which is the best you can expect at this price. However, don’t mistake it for a high-end display because it loses its brightness slightly if you view the screen from the sides. Its speakers are loud and the keyboard is large and sturdy, with black keys to complement the white look. Thanks to a zippy 1.5-GHz dual-core Intel Celeron 3205U CPU and 4GB RAM it delivers impressive performance on basic tasks. Its 16GB of onboard storage won’t be enough for media users who will have to add a high capacity SD card to its cardreader slot. It also features a solid set of other connectivity options with an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, and a Kensington lock slot. The Chrome OS is easy to learn and minimalistic, with an Android like interface including a menu button, app launcher, settings, Wi-Fi and Clock displayed at the bottom right.

Toshiba-CB35-B3340-Chromebook-2-425x2521

Toshiba Chromebook 2 13-inch

Retaining the same size as its predecessor, the new Toshiba Chromebook 2 Toshiba CB35-B3340 features a thinner and lighter frame than many Chromebook of its size. The gritty plastic frame feels like high quality material and is very well built, which cannot be said for many competing cheap Windows 7 laptops. It has a quality 13-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The Full-HD screen is sufficiently bright, handles dark colors well and has good viewing angles. While most Chromebooks feature normal stereo speakers, the CB35 has Skullcandy branded speakers for better than average audio quality. The slim casing carries an adequate selection of ports including a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI-out and an SD card slot. As with previous models you will also get 2 years of free 100GB Google Drive cloud storage. Packing an Intel Celeron N2830 processor backed by 4GB of RAM, its internal configuration is similar to the Lenovo N21 Chromebook and some budget windows laptops like the ASUS K200MA and X551MAV. The CPU manages to function without lag even when multiple tabs are opened in the Chrome browser while streaming audio. Gaming is not the forte of Chromebooks so you can’t expect to run any advanced titles except casual browser based games and you also won’t be able to run regular Windows applications. It has 16GB of inbuilt-storage, typical of most Chromebooks of this price. The battery life is advertised to last 12 hours but in actual usage lasts over seven hours, which is still respectable. All in all, if you don’t want to settle for a tiny screen but still want a portable machine, the 13-inch Toshiba CB35-B3340 is a perfectly sized budget laptop for your basic computing needs with a bunch of stand-out features not found in most competing Windows laptops.

Acer Chromebook R11 CB5-132T-C32M 11.6-inchAcer Chromebook R11 CB5-132T-C32M 11.6-inch

Following a long line of successful Chromebooks, Acer offers a convertable Chromebook that can be used as a traditional laptop and can be effortlessly converted into a tablet by folding the main chassis 360 degrees behind the touchscreen display. The Quad-Core Intel Celeron N3150 processor is backed by 2GB of RAM which will run most Chrome OS apps with ease, but more demanding apps will seem sluggish. Acer has packed the R11 with 32GB of eMMc flash storage which offers great performance and double the storage space of most of its competitors. But as Chrome OS is designed to run in conjunction with Google’s online services the 32GB should suffice for day-to-day tasks. The storage can be extended via the Micro SD slot for users who require more space for multimedia. The IPS touchscreen display offers wide viewing angles, good colors and is fairly responsive, but Chrome OS has not been optimized for touchscreens to the same extent as Android OS and can lead to some frustration while navigating around. Thanks to the low voltage hardware, the Acer Chromebook R11 offer good battery life and its small size and under 3lbs weight makes it a great laptop for users who are constantly on the go. Overall the Acer Chromebook R11 is a great Chromebook for under $300.

ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 11.6-inchASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 11.6-inch

Designed for the classroom, the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 is small, light and has a battery life that will last an entire school day. The plastic shells of the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 have been designed to withstand being dropped and have been wrapped with rubber in order to make it easier to grip when the bell rings. Hardware wise the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 won’t win any awards, but at its price it is well within what we expect from a Chromebook. But the Intel Celeron N3050 and 2GB of RAM will easily cope with classroom tasks and there is almost no lag while using word processing apps or browsing the web. Being a Chromebook, it comes with a 16GB of eMMC flash memory, which is fine for work and web browsing. But it is not intended for storing of multimedia files. But luckily it comes with 100GB of Google Drive cloud based storage for free for 2 years. Sadly the ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS01 does not come with a microSD card slot that can be used as a permanent storage solution. The full size SD card slot leaves the SD card protruding out of the frame. While there are quite a few apps to choose from, Chrome OS offers far less apps than Windows 10 and users will have to look for alternatives to their favorite Windows apps.

Dell-CRM3120-1667BLK-11.6-Inch

Dell CRM3120-1667BLK 11.6-inch

While most Chromebook laptops incorporate modern design elements, the Dell CRM3120-1667BLK with its all-plastic body looks just like a regular budget laptop. The outer appeared might seem boring but the actual material is very sturdy. The rubberized surfaces on the base and around the screen provide additional protection by absorbing shocks, and the keyboard and trackpads are properly sealed for spill protection. Having gone through all kinds of durability tests involving pressure, humidity, temperature and vibrations, this Dell Chromebook is built to last. Cheaply built, budget laptops are prone to hinge damages, but this laptop comes with an 18-degree LCD hinge that can flex all the way to lay flat on the surface. The 11.6-inch screen isn’t pixel rich but it’s plenty bright enough for daily use and it’s matte surface allows for better visibility in bright light than standard LCD displays. The Intel Celeron N2840 Processor along with 2GB of RAM gives you enough power for running basic applications as well as doing some light multitasking heavy web browsing sessions with multiple browser tabs. Most of the 16GB storage is already occupied by Chrome OS, meaning you will need to add an SD Card if you plan on storing more than a handful of files and apps. Ports are aplenty with two USB ports, an HDMI-out and a Kensington lock slot. Running over 9 hours on a charge, its battery life is much longer than other budget chromebooks.. If you leave out its relatively dull look, the Dell CRM3120-1667BLK is the best Chromebook on paper available at this price range.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 2.91 lbs

Pros

  • 4GB of RAM
  • Battery life
  • Good audio
  • Designed for stundents
  • MIL-STD tested

Cons

  • Storage space
  • Brightness levels

Summary

The Dell CRM3120-1667BLK offers good battery life for users on the go or for high school students.

Samsung-Chromebook-2-XE500C12-K01US-11.6-Inch

Samsung Chromebook 2 XE500C12-K01US 11.6-inch

The Samsung Chromebook 2, with its black chassis and a matte finish, is a very elegant machine. It looks and feels more like a regular laptop than a cheap netbook. Armed with an eight-core Samsung Exynos 5 processor and 4GB of RAM, it outshines competing Chromebooks from Acer and HP, which are equipped with less powerful CPU’s and half the amount of memory. However, the Samsung Chromebook 2 costs over $60 more than the Intel-Celeron integrated competitors. Tied to the Chrome OS, most of its functionality is useful only when you’re online, but users who are always browsing will prefer this cheap option over the more expensive, entry-level Windows machines.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 2.60 lbs

Pros

  • Good processor
  • Generous amount of RAM
  • Anti-glare screen

Cons

  • Less competitively priced
  • Low resolution display

Summary

While being priced slightly higher than its competitors the Samsung Chromebook 2 XE500C12-K01US makes up for it with its above entry level specs and anti-glare display, although it does have a slightly lower resolution.

Asus C300MA-BBCLN12 13.3-inch Chromebook

ASUS C300MA-BBCLN12 13.3-inch

The ASUS C300MA-BBCLN12 is a low-cost Chomebook configured with basic internal hardware, excellent battery backup and a large 14-inch screen. With a matte black chassis and a faux brushed-metal polycabornate top, the C300MA features a modern appearance. However the glossy plastic surface on the sides look cheap. Measuring 0.9 inches thick and weighing 3.1 pounds, it’s a lightweight machine that is easy to carry around with a solidly build that won’t wobble easily when placed on your desk like most budget laptops. It has a large chiclet-style keyboard with a wide touchpad that supports multitouch gestures. For plugging in peripherals, it’s equipped with an HDMI port, a SD card reader, a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port. For fast internet on the go it also supports 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless. Its 13.3 inch screen supports a 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, which is typical for budget Chromebooks and Windows laptops. The LCD screen is bright and clear enough but the viewing angle isn’t as optimum as that of an IPS screen. Inside, the C400 packs an Intel Celeron N230 dual-core processor with Intel HD Graphics which offers significantly better performance compared to machines with older Atom processors. Although it is able to tackle basic tasks with ease, with only 2GB of RAM too much multitasking can cause lots of lag. With only a 16GB SSD users will also soon have to add an SDCard or an external hard drive to store large media files. Running over 10 hours on battery, the C300MA-BBCLN12 is an excellent option for those who want to work all day on the move without needing their charger

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.87 lbs

Pros

  • Light weight
  • Great trackpad
  • Excellent battery life
  • Fast booting speeds
  • Price

Cons

  • None upgradable
  • Slightly underpowered CPU
  • Limited storage space
  • Power button right above backspace

Summary

The Asus C300MA-BBCLN12 Chromebook offers decent hardware for the low-cost pricing, but the limited storage space will mean maintaining connection to the Cloud storage.

Lenovo-N2- 80MG0001US-15.6-inch

Lenovo N21 80MG0001US 11.6-inch

The Lenovo N21 80MG0001US Chromebook brings lots of design and hardware upgrades over its predecessor the N20P. Featuring a non-slip texture, anti-peel keys, a water resistant keyboard, a sealed touchpad, and drop resistance with reinforced hinges, the N21 is clearly designed with long-term use in mind. If that wasn’t enough features on a $200 notebook, it includes a retractable handle which makes it easier to carry around. Another unique feature is it’s rotatable webcam with mic, giving you the flexibility to capture videos and images in different angles.A touchscreen and dual-mode design are some of the features missing in this laptop. However, it’s LED screen, though non-touch, is good quality and doesn’t catch any excess glare. Housing an Intel Celeron N2840 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB Hard Drive, it easily outperforms the N20P featuring the slower N2830 processor and much smaller 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. Overall, with its hardware you’ll be able to handle normal school and office activities like a pro. With up to 9.5 hours of battery life you can also do a full day of work without needing a charge. Small in size but big on connectivity, it also includes all current ports and wireless technology including Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI out and a memory card reader. If you want a Chromebook that’s highly durable, portable and sufficiently powerful for school and work with a world class battery life, the N21 is another great catch.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
