Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG 15.6-inch

Gaming is a massive pastime that has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, but not everyone can afford to spend upwards of $1000 on a gaming machine. This is where Acer have stepped in. The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is a budget friendly gaming laptop that offers great hardware at an extremely attractive price. The 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor and 8GB of RAM will cope with day-to-day tasks with relative ease. While many similarly priced laptops offer the NVIDIA GeForce 940M processor, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is equipped with the GeForce 940MX graphics card. The 940MX offers 20% better performance and will allow for casual gaming and will run most modern games on low to medium settings while still offering good frame rates. While the solid state drive offers lightning fast Windows 10 boot and game loading speeds, the 256GB of storage space is quite small for modern gaming titles. We recommend upgrading to a 512GB or 1TB SSD to increase the storage space while retaining the fast speeds. While many laptops under $600 are still being offered with maximum resolutions of 1366 x 786, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG has a Full-HD display. The display offers good viewing angles, vivid colors and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. A big draw card for the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is its amazing battery life, users can expect up to 12 hours off of a single charge while browsing the web or working in Word, although expect that life reduced when gaming.

ASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inchASUS K501UW-AB78 15.6-inch

While many gaming laptops feature aggressive stylings and are usually quite bulky, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is quite different. Featuring a sleek aluminum design, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is thin and light for a gaming machine, making it great for gamers after a portable solution. Sporting a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of RAM, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 will make light work of your daily tasks. But for more intensive apps and for better gaming performance and we recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 16GB. The dual cooling fans keep the ASUS K501UW-AB78 cool when under load, but users can expect to hear the fans slightly when pushing the laptops hardware. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The ASUS K501UW-AB78 features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will run Fallout 4 and Overwatch on ultra settings, but more intensive games will have to be run on medium and high settings to maintain good frame rates. One feature that is missing from the ASUS K501UW-AB78 is the addition of USB 3.1 Type-C. This would help to future proof the laptop as users could easily connect an External GPU dock to run more powerful desktop graphics cards. While some of its competitors are still offering smaller 256GB SSD’s, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 comes standard with a 512GB SSD for double the storage space. While the Full-HD display offers rich colors and great viewing angles, it is slightly small for gaming. But users will easily be able to connect a monitor or TV via the HDMI port for a much more pleasurable gaming experience.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4.4 lbs

Pros

  • Skylake processor
  • Dual fan cooling system
  • GeForce GTX 960M
  • Crisp Full-HD display

Cons

  • No USB 3.1 Type-C
  • No IPS display
  • No optical drive

Summary

The ASUS K501UW-AB78 is a sleek gaming laptop that offers great hardware for gamers who are constantly on the go. But the lack of a USB 3.1 Type-C port means that it is not as future proof as some of its competitors.

Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inchDell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6-inch

Dell is known for creating some of the best budget and business machines on the market. But Dell also know a thing or two about gaming and the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a powerful gaming laptop for gamers on a budget. Even though the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK doesn’t have the aggressive gaming looks that we expect with gaming rigs, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While many other manufacturers are offering machines with ultra-voltage processors, the Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK sports the same powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ as many of the more expensive gaming laptops. The processor is backed by 8GB of RAM which can easily be upgraded as Dell has left one slot free on the board. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M allows for modern gaming titles to be run on medium to high graphics and is backed by 4GB of video memory to allow it to render more complex graphics. While many gaming laptops are offering QHD+ and UHD displays at a similar price point, the Inspiron i7559-2512BLK still features a Full-HD display to reduce costs. But the Full-HD display has anti-glare technology that almost reduces glare to zero and games still look great at 1920×1080. To further save costs, Dell has rather fitted a Hybrid hard drive instead of an SSD which is a vast improvement over the 5400rpm hard drives. The 8GB of cache allows for faster boot speeds and game loading times, but users have no control over which files are stored on the SSD section of the Hybrid drive. The 1TB of storage space offers ample space for games and multimedia, but users can replace the Hybrid drive in favor of a much faster solid state drive to increase the laptop’s performance.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 5.67 lbs

Pros

  • Skylake CPU
  • NVIDIA GTX 960M
  • Price
  • Anti-glare display
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • No SSD
  • No optical drive
  • No control over the SSHD cache

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK is a budget friendly gaming laptop that features powerful hardware in a sleek and unassuming design. While the SSHD is an improvement over 5400 rpm drives, we would recommend upgrading to an SSD.

ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inchASUS ZX53VW-AH58 15.6-inch

If an ASUS ROG laptop is just slightly out of your price range, then you will be pleased to know that ASUS have a few cheaper options that still manage to offer great gaming experiences. The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 even features a superfast M.2 SSD which will give you a slight edge while loading into multiplayer games and will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds. With 512GB of storage space, you get enough space to install some of the larger games on the market while still leaving some room to store all of your media files. With a Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor and 8GB of RAM, you will have no issues with everyday tasks and running most AAA games. However, you might want to look at upgrading the RAM to 16GB as the installed 8GB would be the first culprit if the ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 started feeling sluggish. The graphics are delivered by the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB of video memory. While it is not as powerful as the newer GTX 1060, this card does help to bring down the price of this gaming laptop. However, the GTX 960M will still run quite a few of the latest gaming titles on ultra settings with acceptable frame rates. For you to enjoy your favorite games, you get a matte Full-HD display which offers rich colors and good viewing angles for gaming and watching 1080p videos. One of the biggest complaints has been that the trackpad is subpar and you might experience a few misclicks while using it. However, most gamers will use a good gaming mouse while playing games or even just surfing the web.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.51 lbs

Pros

  • Large M.2 SSD
  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Matte Full-HD display
  • 0.8-inch thin metallic case
  • Skylake-based processor
  • Backlit keyboard

Cons

  • Sub-par trackpad
  • Not for hardcore gamers
  • Fn keys can’t be swapped
  • Battery life

Summary

The ASUS ZX53VW-AH58 offers great specs for the gamer on a budget or for someone new to the world of gaming. However, the trackpad is sub-par and will frustrate some users.

Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS 15.6-inchLenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS 15.6-inch

Lenovo have a dedicated gaming range of high-end gaming laptops, but both the Y700 and Y900 ranges are usually quite pricey for the budget conscious gamer. This is where the Ideapad 700 series comes into play. Designed to be a multimedia powerhouse laptop, the Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS will allow you to play a host of AAA gaming titles thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. The GeForce GTX 950M is an entry-level GTX graphics card, but with 4GB GDDR3 video memory of it will still allow you to play games on medium settings. A few AAA games such as Overwatch, Dota 2, CS: GO and Diablo III will run on ultra settings and with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Everyday tasks will run lag free thanks to the Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6300U processor and 12GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM. However the Core i5-6300U has a benchmark score half that of the more powerful i7-6700HQ processor, which might struggle with more intensive apps and true lag free gaming in the future. The Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS features a super fast solid state drive which will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds and it will give you the edge when it comes to online gaming. The only downside of the SSD is that it only offers 256GB of storage space, which will fill up quickly due to the size of newer games and Full-HD media files. Luckily you will be able to install a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive to increase the laptop’s storage space.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.1 lbs

Pros

  • Dedicated NVIDIA graphics
  • Full-HD display
  • M.2 SSD
  • Healthy amount of RAM
  • Price

Cons

  • Limited storage space
  • No USB 3.1 Type-C port
  • Below average battery life
  • No optical drive

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad 700-15ISK 80RU00FEUS is a powerful multimedia laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card that will allow you to play a host of AAA gaming titles. But the 256GB of storage space will fill up quickly.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-76YK 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-76YK 15.6-inch

Not everyone can afford spending over $1000 on a gaming laptop and thanks to manufacturers like Acer, not everyone has to. The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-76YK is a gaming spec laptop that has a budget friendly price tag. Sporting a Skylake Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-76YK will cope with any day-to-day tasks with ease. The dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card offers high-performance graphics and will run the latest gaming titles on medium settings while still offering great frame rates. Slightly older titles will run on high to ultra settings thanks to the 940MX’s Maxwell architecture. While the solid state drive does offer lightning fast boot and game loading times, it is slightly small for modern games and HD multimedia. We do recommend upgrading to a 512GB or 1TB solid state drive to increase the storage space. The Full-HD display offers good viewing angles, vivid colors and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. While many gaming laptops offer extremely poor battery life, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-76YK claims a battery life of up to 12 hours off of a single charge, but battery life under heavy load and while gaming will be significantly lower but still better than its competitors.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 12 hours battery life

Pros

  • Brilliant display
  • Excellent battery life

Cons

  • Limited storage space
  • Bulky and heavy

Gaming Laptops Under $1000 – More Options

Lenovo-Ideapad-Y700-15.6-InchLenovo Ideapad Y700 80NV0029US 15.6-inch

Lenovo are known for their almost bulletproof business laptops, but Lenovo also have a range of powerful gaming laptops. Sports aggressive gaming looks and a design that closely resembles a stealth fighter, the Ideapad Y700 is as much a gaming pedigree laptop as the gaming laptops that we know and love. Equipped with a powerful Skylake Intel i7-6700HQ processer and 8GB of RAM, the Y700 will cope with demanding apps with ease. But we do recommend upgrading to 16GB or more for the rendering of media. No gaming laptop would be complete without a dedicated graphics card. The Y700 sports an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, which will be able to run most modern gaming titles on medium to high graphics while still offering decent frame rates. The 256GB solid state drive offers lightning fast game loading speeds, but the 256GB of storage space is a limiting factor due to the size of modern games. The Full-HD IPS display offers vibrant colors, wide viewing angles and the anti-glare technology reduces the glare to almost zero. While it does not feature a QHD+ or UHD display, the Y700’s display does offer a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The cooling system is not as effective as other gaming machines and does leave the keyboard hot while gaming. Overall the Ideapad Y700 is a great gaming laptop for users who are after a powerful gaming laptop at a more affordable price.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life

Pros

  • Solid state drive
  • In-panel switching display
  • Great audio
  • Price
  • Aggressive gaming design

Cons

  • Runs hot when gaming
  • Spongy keyboard
  • Last generation ports
  • Limited storage space for modern games

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad Y700 15.6-Inch features fast performance backed by great hardware along with superb sound wrapped in a solid build. However, it is bulky with an SSD that is pretty small when you consider the size of apps and games today.

ASUS-ROG-GL552VW-DH71-15.6

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 15.6-Inch

The ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 does come in at just above $1k, but it is still a worthwhile laptop to make this list.  It features the latest Intel Core i7 6700HQ processor and a full 16 GB of RAM along with a 1 TB hard drive running at 7200 RPM.  This means that you can not only store almost anything you want on this laptop, but everything should load relatively fast.  Backed by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, you will easily be able to run all the latest generation of games at relatively high frame rates and only the latest next gen titles will really tax your system.  On top of that, this device includes the latest and fastest USB 3.1 Type-C port to allow for some of the fastest transfers using compatible devices along with next generation DDR4 RAM for additional performance boost over older machines .  If you are on the hunt for a gaming powerhouse and you have a little extra to spend, you can’t go wrong with the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71.  It provides all the specs you need for the perfect all around laptop and gaming powerhouse in one and, with its newly released Skylake based chipset, your hardware won’t be left in the dirt for some time to come.

ASUS ROG GL551JW-WH71(WX) 15.6-Inch

If you love the ASUS products, but don’t want to spend as much to get one, the ASUS ROG GL551JW-WH71(WX) is the way to go.  To reach this more affordable price point, some sacrifices were made, but ASUS has still managed to produce a laptop that will handle most gaming and high end applications very well.  This unit is powered by the Intel Core i7 4720HQ running at 2.6 GHz, which is slower than some of the processors on this list, but is still fast enough to handle most modern applications and games with ease.  For graphics, the laptop comes with an NVIDIA GTX960M with 2 GB of memory which is more than enough to run most modern games, even if you have to back down some of the highest end graphics.  Unfortunately, it only comes with a 1 TB hard drive running at 5400 RPMs, making it slower than other devices on this list.  Still, for the price, you really can’t beat what you get.  For the money, this is one of the most affordable options on this list and is great for any gamer that is shopping on a budget.

Specs

Acer-Aspire-V15-Nitro-VN7-591G-70RT

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-70RT 15.6-Inch

Acer is well known for building quality machines at very affordable prices and the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-70RT only helps to validate their reputation. Powered by an Intel Core i7 running at 2.6 GHz, this laptop has more than enough power to run almost any application you throw at it. The included 8 GB of RAM is enough for most games and applications but multitasking large applications could prove difficult. The laptop ships with an NVIDIA GTX 960M with 4 GB of RAM and while this is more than enough for most games, better performance can be seen from other laptops on this list with bigger, faster cards with more memory. One of the biggest complaints many find with this laptop is the very limited upgrade-ability. Very little documentation is giving and even simple upgrades like adding more RAM proves difficult compared to other laptops. However, the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition offers a sleek design and great specs making it a top option for users that value their laptops design and want the slickest gaming experience possible.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1

  • Hardware Performance

Cons

  • Heat
  • Battery Life

Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US 15.6-inchLenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US 15.6-inch

Lenovo are known for their IBM legacy and for their outstanding business laptops. But they also have a few gaming laptops up their sleeve. One of these laptops is the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US. Sporting the same Skylake i7-6700HQ processor as many high-end gaming laptops and 16GB of DDR4 RAM, the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US will easily cope with more intensive tasks and will offer lag free gaming. To back up its gaming pedigree, it comes with an NVIDIA GTX 950M with 4GB of video memory. While it’s not the most powerful GPU on the market, it will still run some of our favorite games on high and ultra settings. But you can expect that future games will run on lower settings. While many laptops in its price category only feature a mechanical hard drive, the Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US comes with both a 128GB solid state drive and a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive. You will have to be selective with what games you install on your SSD as newer games have dramatically increased in size. Games such as Battlefield 4 Premium will take up half of your SSD’s storage. The Full-HD IPS display offers great viewing angles and is quite bright with vivid colors. If you are used to a budget laptop display, then this 1920 x 1080 display will be a massive step up and will make gaming that much more enjoyable. But like many gaming laptops, you will have to endure less than average battery life while gaming, expect between one and two hours off of a full charge.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 5.1 lbs

Pros

  • Skylake processor

  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • Full-HD IPS display

Cons

  • No USB Type-C
  • GPU is not future proof
  • 5400rpm HDD
  • Battery life
  • No optical drive

Summary

The Lenovo Ideapad 700 80RU00D7US offers good value for money, but the GTX 950M graphics card is not as future proof as more powerful laptop GPU’s.

The large size display and crystal clear audio make for an immersive high fidelity gaming experience but at the detriment of battery life and portability. All in all if portability is not an issue then this machine should definitely be considered.

ASUS K501UX-WH71 15.6-inchASUS K501UX-WH71 15.6-inch

ASUS are known for their ROG line of gaming laptops that are crammed full of powerful hardware. But the laptops in the ROG range are usually heavy and bulky, and sport poor battery performance. The ASUS K501UX-WH71 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and despite its ultrabook like appearance, this laptop boasts some powerful hardware. The Skylake Intel Core i7-6500U processor is backed by 16GB of RAM, which will allow it to cope with any day-to-day tasks including Photoshop. Equipped with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX950M, the ASUS K501UX-WH71 can run modern gaming titles. While the GTX950M may not be the most powerful graphics card, it will run games on medium to high settings with decent frame rates. While many gaming laptops only feature Full-HD displays, the ASUS K501UX-WH71 comes equipped with a Full-HD display that offers rich colors, decent viewing angles and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. But the lack of an IPS display does affect the overall performance of the panel. A solid state drive offers lightning fast Windows boot and gaming loading times, but the limited 256GB of storage space is a drawback with modern games increasing in size. While many other gaming machines offer extremely poor battery life, the ASUS K501UX-WH71 will give you a decent 5 hours off of a single charge. The ultrabook like design also means that this laptop is extremely portable and can easily be carried around as a daily work machine.

Don’t let the lack of aggressive gaming looks deceive you, under the elegant shell there is a gaming laptop for that offers decent hardware for its price. The ASUS X555UB-NS71 is powered by an Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which when combined will make light work of your daily tasks. While the 8GB of RAM will cope perfectly fine with most day-to-day tasks it can be upgraded for better performance. But the downside is that the ASUS X555UB-NS71 only has one RAM slot and can only accept a maximum of 12GB of RAM. While some of its competitors still offer 5400rpm hard drives, the ASUS X555UB-NS71 comes equipped with a 1TB 7200rpm drive for increased performance. While it is not as fast as a solid state drive, it does offer better performance. To ensure that games will run with decent frame rates, the ASUS X555UB-NS71 features an NVIDIA GeForce 940M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR3 video memory. While it is an entry level card, users can run games like Battlefield 4 and Overwatch on medium settings. But more graphics intense games will need to be run on the lowest of settings for smooth game play. Despite running an a low voltage CPU, the ASUS X555UB-NS71’s battery life doesn’t fare much better than some of the high-end gaming behemoths and users can expect well under 5 hours when gaming.

ASUS FZ50VW-NS51 15.6-inchASUS FZ50VW-NS51 15.6-inch

ASUS have released a handful of powerful gaming laptops for the budget conscious gamer who is after a machine that offers great value for money. The design and chassis of the ASUS FZ50VW-NS51 are similar to the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71, but some users have commented on its inferior build quality compared to its big brother. The ASUS FZ50VW-NS51 boasts a Skylake Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor that offers good single core performance, but the lack of Hyper-Threading will be noticeable with more processor intensive tasks. Its Skylake processor is backed by 8GB of DDR4 RAM which can be easily upgraded to 16GB or 32GB, thanks to an easily accessible maintenance panel. While most of its competitors offer the NVIDIA GTX 950M graphics card, the ASUS features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M which scores higher on the benchmark tests and offers better frame rates for newer titles. Ample storage space is provided by a 1TB 5400rpm mechanical hard drive and a 128GB M.2 SSD offers lighting fast speeds for gaming and apps. The Full-HD display offers a maximum resolution of 1920×1080, but the colors and viewing angles are very average and disappointing compared to some of its competitors who offer IPS displays. But users can connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB Type-C for a superior gaming experience. The battery performance is average for a gaming laptop and users can expect around 2 and a half hours off of a single charge while under load.

ASUS R516UX-RH71 15.6-inchASUS R516UX-RH71 15.6-inch

While most 15.6-inch laptops weigh in at over 5 pounds, the ASUS R516UX-RH71 weighs just 4.4 pounds and is a great choice for users on the go. The Full-HD display offers great colors for web browsing and for video streaming, but the angles are not as good as those on laptops with IPS display panels. Powering the ASUS R516UX-RH71 is a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor and 8GB of DDR3L RAM and the RAM can be upgraded to a maximum of 16GB if you want to improve its performance. But the installed 8GB will cope with more hardware intensive apps such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The 1TB of storage space offers plenty of space to store all of your files, but it is a slower 5400rpm mechanical hard drive. We recommend upgrading it to at least a 7200rpm drive and if your budget allows for it, a solid state drive for best performance. To ensure that you can play the latest gaming titles, ASUS have gone with an entry level NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M with 2GB of dedicated video memory. The GTX 950M will allow you to play your favorite games on low to medium settings, while still achieving good frame rates. Titles such as Battlefield 4, FIFA 2016, Overwatch and Diablo III will run on high and ultra settings at 1920 x 1080. The battery life is rather average and web browsing will see 4-5 hours off of a single charge, but you will see a dramatic drop in battery life while gaming.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 4.4 lbs

Pros

  • Dedicated graphics

  • Full-HD display
  • Lighter than most 15.6-inch laptops

Cons

  • Slower 5400rpm hard drive
  • Entry level NVIDIA graphics
  • None IPS display
  • No optical drive

Summary

The ASUS R516UX-RH71 is a light 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a dedicated GTX 950M graphics card, but the entry level graphics card will mean it is more suited for casual gamers.

Lenovo Z70 80FG00DCUS

Lenovo Z70 80FG00DCUS 17.3-inch

The Lenovo Z70 80FG0037US is a stylish and powerful laptop designed for multimedia, but still manages to offer a little something extra for gamers. Lenovo packed the Z70 with a 5th Generation Broadwell Intel i7-5500U processor, 8GB of DDR3L RAM and a 1TB SSHD. The hybrid hard drive comes with 8GB of flash memory, which is used for cache. This allows for Windows to boot quicker and allows for games and programs to launch faster than with standard mechanical drives. The 8GB of RAM copes with most day to day tasks, but for a few dollars it can easily be upgraded to 16GB for better performance. The 17.3-inch IPS display offers great viewing angles and has a maximum resolution of 1920×1080, which has become the standard at this price point. A mid-ranged NVIDIA GeForce GT840M graphics card allows for a fair bit of gaming on medium to high settings. But with newer titles requiring more powerful hardware, the GT840M will fall behind over time. The downward facing JBL designed speakers sound crisp and clear when set on a hard surface, but are a bit more muffled when using it on the sofa or on your lap. Reviewers are getting mixed results when it comes to the battery life, which seems to be very average at around 4 hours while browsing the internet or working in an Office based program. Gaming will see that time being slashed by about half, but ideally this is a desktop replacement laptop as it is a bit heavier at 6.6 lbs and will be plugged into the mains most of the time. A major cretic has been the amount of Lenovo bloatware, so be prepared to do some cleaning if you don’t want to use any of their software. Some users have mentioned an issue with the Ethernet port which seems to be a bit of a design issue from Lenovo, but most people connect via WiFi these days so it really only affects a select few users.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • 4 hours battery life

Pros

  • SSHD Hybrid drive
  • Powerful hardware
  • Full HD IPS display

Cons

  • Only 1x USB 3.0

  • Dual-Core processor
  • Lenovo bloatware

Summary

The Lenovo Z70 80FG0037US features powerful hardware for gaming and a full HD 17.3-inch display, but the average battery life and heavier weight mean that it will more than likely be a desktop replacement.

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 17-Inch

If you are looking for a great balance between power and price, the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 could be just what you’re looking for in a laptop.  Featuring the latest Intel Core i7 Skylake processor, the laptop runs cool and fast, despite not having an SSD.  It comes with an NVIDIA GTX960M, which isn’t the most powerful video card out there but it does get the job done.  This laptop is a little large, mostly due to the giant 17.3-inch screen that is bright and clear running a Full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.  With 16GB of DDR4 RAM, you will have more than enough memory to run multiple apps side by side without having to worry about any slow downs.  However, if battery life is what you’re looking for, avert your eyes, as this model won’t allow you to leave an electrical outlet for very long at all.  All in all, if you are on the hunt for a well balanced laptop that will play almost any game, even if it isn’t at the highest settings, this could be the perfect match for you.

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-592G-71ZL 15.6-Inch

Another perfect laptop for gamers who want the latest technology but don’t want to break the bank, the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-592G-71ZL 15.6-Inch features some of the latest hardware like the sixth generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ clocking in at an impressive 2.6 GHz.  Backed by 8 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB of RAM, you will have more than enough room to open multiple applications and play most games at decent frame rates.  The Nitro Black Edition features a sleek black case that, while mostly plastic, is still sturdy and finger print resistant.    The Nitro Black Edition comes with Windows 10 pre-installed, meaning you won’t have to wait for the machine to run hours of updates to start using the latest operating system from Microsoft.  While the system does come with a 1 TB hard drive, it runs at only 5400 RPMs, which is slower than many gaming laptops.  Still, sacrifices had to be made to lower the price.  Overall, the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition is a great gaming laptop that is perfect for gamers that don’t mind making a few sacrifices on specs to still get a decent gaming unit.

ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 15.6-inchASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 15.6-inch

The ROG brand of gaming laptops from ASUS is renowned across the world and loved by novice and hardcore gamers alike. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VT shares many similarities with its more powerful brother the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71, with the biggest difference being the fact that it still features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M with 3GB of video memory. While it doesn’t match the power or the frame rates of the GTX 1060, you will still be able to enjoy the latest AAA gaming titles on high and ultra settings. You get the same Skylake-based Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which will allow for a lag free experience while gaming. The CPU and the RAM will also easily handle more intensive apps and heavier multitasking. At under an inch thick, the ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 features ASUS’s Hyper Cool Duo-Copper cooling system which reduces heat, but it will still heat up when you push the frame rates. The ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 does not feature a solid state drive and instead it comes standard with a 7200rpm mechanical hard drive. While it offers ample storage space better speeds than a standard 5400rpm laptop hard drive, it still lacks the performance of an SSD. Luckily the ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 comes with an empty M.2 slot that you can use to install a superfast SSD. We recommend looking at the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB as a good value for money option. The Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology and offers a good 83% sRGB color gamut, which is good news for designers.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home

Pros

  • Intel Skylake i7 CPU
  • Vibrant Full-HD display
  • NVIDIA GTX 970M
  • Free slot for an M.2 SSD
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • Thin and light

Cons

  • ASUS bloatware
  • Built out of plastic
  • Heats up under load
  • No SSD

Summary

The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VT offers a thin and light design with a powerful i7 processor and a decent dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. But the reduced size means that it will heat up more than some of the other ASUS ROG laptops on the market.

HP Pavilion 15-ak010nr

HP Pavilion 15-ak010nr 15.6-inch

The HP Pavilion 15-ak010nr is the latest gaming offering to come from HP, its slim dimensions and clean looks are backed up by powerful hardware. It boasts the latest Skylake Intel i7 6700HQ processor, 8GB of DDR3L RAM and 1TB of storage. Reviewers have commented on the choice to stay with DDR3L despite the Skylake processor and on the use of a slower 5400rpm hard drive, but both can be upgraded to increase performance. The full HD IPS display has great viewing angles, rich colors and has a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. The mid-range NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950M will run most of the current titles at medium graphics while still offering good framerates, setting the graphics to high will see the framerates drastically drop to below 30fps. The backlit keyboard is great for playing at night or in dark rooms, but HP has opted for two settings, on or off. The sound has been designed and enhanced by the Danish company Bang & Olufsen, which offers crisp sound for gaming and media, but the maximum levels could be a bit higher. Heat build-up is minimal and the fan is relatively quiet under normal circumstances, but expect it to be louder while gaming. HP claims the battery life is about 8 hours, but reviewers and users are posting much lower figures, gaming with high graphics will see the battery lasting for just over an hour. Finally, upgrading the RAM and storage device is a bit of a pain, as the entire back cover needs to be removed to access the internals, watch out for the hidden screws when undertaking this task.

GIGABYTE P15FV5-NE1 15.6-inchGIGABYTE P15FV5-NE1 15.6-inch

Gigabyte is a name synonymous with gaming and their high-end motherboards and gaming laptops are used by serious gamers across the globe. But Gigabyte also caters to the budget conscious buyer who is after a powerful machine that will not break the bank. The GIGABYTE P15FV5-NE1 is a strong contender in the budget gaming laptop market and offers great hardware and a sleek design for under $1000. Sporting the same Skylake i7-6700HQ as most high-end gaming laptops, the GIGABYTE P15FV5-NE1 has the raw processing power to run hardware intensive apps and modern gaming titles. The 6th generation Intel processor is backed by 8GB of RAM, which can easily and cheaply be upgraded to 16GB via the easily accessible maintenance hatch. While the 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample space to store media and to install games, the 5400rpm drive speed is noticeably slower than most higher-end gaming machines. But Gigabyte has included a 128GB M.2 solid state drive to counteract the slower mechanical hard drive, allowing users to install a selection of apps and games onto the SSD, we do recommend upgrading the SSD as the 128GB storage space is limited even further with Windows 10 being installed on that drive. While some of its competitors offer the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M or even the GTX 970M, the GIGABYTE P15FV5-NE1 only features an NVIDIA GTX 950M, which will mean running most modern titles on lower settings in order to retain good frame rates.

Dell Alienware ANW15-1421SLV 15.6-inch

Alienware 15 ANW15-1421SLV 15.6-Inch

The ANW15-1421SLV is one of the cheapest 15-inch gaming and entertainment laptops from Alienware. Instead of going full metal, this time Alienware has used carbon fiber top with plastic, which helps reduce weight and keep the laptop sturdy at the same time. The color customizable and programmable backlit keyboard further enhances the attractiveness of this laptop. However, its construction is bulky and it’s not as compact as the latest 15-inch gaming laptops. Its competitors like the ASUS and Lenovo Y50 are equipped with a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and NVIDIA GTX 960M graphics but the ANW15-1421SLV comes with a NVIDIA GTX 965M graphics card, a Core i5-4210 Haswell processor and just 8GB of RAM, which is upgradeable up to 32GB. On the brighter note, its GTX 965M graphics gives 15 to 20 additional fps than the GTX 960M graphics cards, which means you will be able to run more games at higher settings. That said, if your primary use is gaming, then you may get more out of this Core i5/GTX 965 combo versus Core i7/GTX 960 on other similarly priced laptops. In terms of additional features, its sound quality is loud and clear and the battery life is decent in normal use but runs out within an hour of gaming which may be a big drawback for mobile users.

ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 15.6-Inch

With the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71, you can get your hands on a laptop that is powerful enough for even the most hardware intensive games for around the $1000 mark. This recently released ROG certified laptop is powered by an Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor running at 2.6 GHz and 16 GB of RAM, more than enough power to run almost any game or application under the sun. It’s NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M offers up to a %25 increase in framerates compared to GTX 860M based laptops on this list and at only a %10-20 increase in price. That’s also not to mention it’s 16GB of RAM (can you say, double up?) and 1TB hard drive clocking in at 7200RPM. The DS71 has received positive review coverage from most leading publishers. However, some users reported minor issues with its hard drive and optical drive stability which are areas to watch out for. All in all, the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 offers a top notch balance between hardware and cost, giving you some of the best gaming specs you can find at a price that’s within reach for anyone looking for a mid-range gaming laptop. The DS71 is a solid investment that will be able to play all major releases at high framerates for the foreseeable future.

Alienware-ANW13-2273SLV-13-Inch-Gaming-Laptop

Alienware 13 ANW13-2273SLV 13-Inch

Previously even Alienware’s base models used to cost thousands of dollars, but now to compete in the mid-range market Alienware has introduce a new 13-inch model, the ANW13-2273SLV. Despite topping the $1000 at most retailers, this is one of the cheapest Alienware laptops that you can buy right now so you’d expect some corners to be cut. Fortunately, it has retained its signature design so that it’s not much different than its larger 17 and 18-inch high-end siblings. The Alienware 13 has a silver lid made of carbon fiber mixed plastic material – this is not the usual cheap material you see on competing gaming laptops. Due to a smaller than usual Full-HD screen and less power hungry hardware, it is very light and manages to run over 6 hours on battery making it an excellent travel notebook for work or school on top of gaming on the move. With an Intel Core i5-5200U processor, 8GB RAM and GTX 860M graphics, it packs just enough power for gaming at medium to high settings on most modern titles. Competing ASUS and Lenovo Y50 laptops come with Core i7 and 16GB of RAM for the same price, but those might be an overkill unless you prefer gaming on Ultra settings or on the highest resolutions possible. Other features worth mentioned here are the excellent Klipsch speakers and comfortable keyboard with customizable lighting effects. Overall, the ANW13-2273SLV is an excellent option for mid-range gamer looking to own a portable and affordable Alienware machine, and what it may lack in the hardware department, it more than makes up for with its outstanding build quality and portable design
