The ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 is an updated version of the ROG DH71. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7 6700HQ processor and a 16GB of DDR4 RAM, the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 will cope with any day-to-day tasks with ease. The GTX 960M will easily be able to run all the latest generation of games at relatively high frame rates, but the GTX960M is a mid-range graphics card meaning it’s not as future proof as models sporting the GTX970M or GTX980M cards. The display offers rich colors and wide viewing angles are provided by its in-panel switching. While the ROG GL552VW-DH74 does not come with a QHD+ or 4K display, the 17.3-inch does offer Full-HD and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. The USB 3.1 Type-C port allows for super fast transfer speeds and will also allow for users to connect a Thunderbolt compatible display. If you are on the hunt for a gaming powerhouse and you have a little extra to spend, you can’t go wrong with the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74.

ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inchASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 15.6-inch

When it comes to high-end gaming laptops, there are only a few names that are worth considering and ASUS is one of them. Their Republic Of Gamers (ROG) laptops have always been some of the most sought after laptops when it comes to serious gamers. One of their latest offerings is the new ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 and like many of their products, it does not disappoint. While it is not the thinnest or lightest laptop, it is well below the industry standard when it comes to 15.6-inch gaming laptops. Powering this beast is a Skylake based Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which combined will easily offer lag free gaming and enough power for designers and video editors. ASUS have jumped on board with the new 10-series range of NVIDIA graphics cards and the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 features the GeForce GTX 1070 laptop edition. The GTX 1070 outperforms its predecessor and its performance is on par with the GTX 980M. The new Pascal architecture offers superior performance when it comes to VR gaming and will make the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 more future proof as some of the other ROG laptops. To store all of your games and multimedia files, the ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71 comes with both a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive and a superfast 256GB M.2 solid state drive. But with games ever increasing in size, you will have to choose which games you want to install on the SSD. The 15.6-inch Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles and rich colors thanks to its In-plane switching technology. You also get G-SYNC which allows the display to synchronize its refresh rate with the GTX 1070’s rendering rate.

ASUS G751JY-VS71(WX) 17.3-InchASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) 17.3-inch

The ASUS ROG series is ASUS’s purposely built gaming line of laptops that offers users powerful hardware for the latest gaming titles. With a powerful Haswell processor and 16GB of RAM, the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) will cope with even the most hardware intensive tasks with ease. While some users might have concerns about the older generation Intel i7 processor, the i7-4720HQ has a slightly higher benchmark score than the newer Skylake i7-6700HQ that is fitted to most newer 2016 gaming machines. One of the disappointing drawbacks of the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) is that ASUS has removed the 128GB solid state drive to reduce costs. But the 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space and while the 7200rpm drive does not offer the same speeds as an SSD, it is a vast improvement over the 5400rpm drives. Users can add an SDD to the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) and clone their OS for improved performance. As it is designed for gaming, the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) features an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with 4GB of dedicated video memory, making it far more future proof than gaming laptops running the GTX 970M. Users will be able to run the latest gaming titles on high and ultra settings while still achieving higher frame rates. While some of its competitors are offering UHD and QHD+ display panels, the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) only offers a Full-HD display with a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. But the IPS display offers rich and vivid colors and wide viewing angles. Overall the ASUS ROG G751JY-VS71(WX) is a jam packed gaming laptop with powerful hardware and an irresistible price tag to match.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 2.5 hours battery life

  • Runs cool and quiet
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inchASUS ROG Strix GL502VM-DB71 15.6-inch

The ROG range of gaming laptops from ASUS have always been on the frontline of offering a great gaming experience. The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM might not be winning the race for the thinnest gaming laptop, but at 4.9 pounds and at just 0.94 inches thick, it is below the category standard. You get the usual aggressive gaming looks that you will find on the higher-end ROG laptops, but ASUS has toned it down just a bit to offer a very sleek laptop. Sporting an Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, the ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM will easily offer lag free performance when it comes to current gaming titles. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB and ASUS have left one slot free to add a second 16GB RAM module. We recommend the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2400 (2 x 16G) kit as a replacement for an improved gaming experience. ASUS have also gone with the new 10-series graphics from NVIDIA and features the GeForce GTX 1060 laptop edition. The GTX 1060 offers a huge improvement in performance over its predecessor the GTX 960M. You now get 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and you will be able to play demanding titles such as Battlefield 4, The Division and Fallout 4 on ultra settings. You will however see a massive drop in frame rates with a 4K monitor and a resolution of 3840 x 2160. You get a single 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive, but there is a free M.2 slot for you to add a superfast solid state drive. The Full-HD display offers wide viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology and offers a good 83% sRGB color gamut, which is good news for designers.

Specs

  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.60GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (Laptop) 6GB GDDR5 [View Framerates]
  • 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life

Pros

  • Intel Skylake i7 processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060

ASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition 17.3-inchASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition 17.3-inch

If you are a serious gamer with a big budget, then the ASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition is well worth looking at. Its aggressive looks are backed up by some very powerful hardware. Powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6820HK processor and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, the ASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition will have no issue running the latest games or hardware intensive design apps. The benefit of the i7-6820HK is that it has an unlocked multiplier, which will allow you to easily overclock the processor. While many gaming laptops are still offering the GTX 980M, the ASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB of video memory. The GTX 1070 offers 10-15% better performance than its predecessors and this is very noticeable with the frame rates that it can achieve. It scored 13916 on 3DMark’s Fire Strike graphics test, unseating the previous contender the Origin Eon17 SLX by almost 2000 points. To store all of your games and multimedia files, ASUS has installed both a 256GB solid state drive and a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive. But with the size of modern games, you will easily fill the SSD in no time. The Full-HD 17.3-inch display offers G-SYNC and while it is not a 4K display, it offers sharp image quality and vivid colors. The ASUS ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition is also VR ready, making it slightly more future proof than some of its competitors. However the battery life is poor but this is nothing new when it comes to gaming laptops.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 3.5 hours battery life
  • 9.5 lbs

  • No RGB backlit keyboard

Summary

MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 17.3-inchMSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 17.3-inch

MSI are on the forefront of the gaming scene and they have been releasing some of the most powerful gaming laptops for a number of years now. The new Apache Pro comes with a 10-series NVIDIA graphics card, which offers far better graphics performance than its predecessor. The GeForce GTX 1060 features 6GB of GDDR5 video memory and compared to its predecessor it scores more than double on 3DMark’s Fire Strike Graphics benchmark test. This will mean that you will be able to play AAA gaming titles such as The Division, Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and The Witcher 3 on ultra-settings. The GTX 1060 also offers far better VR support than the previous generation, which will mean that the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 is slightly more future proof than some of its competitors still running the GTX 960. To ensure that you have a lag free gaming experience, MSI have gone with a Skylake-based sixth generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and 12GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM. While 12GB is an odd number when it comes to gaming laptops, it can easily and cheaply be upgraded to 16GB to increase its performance. To ensure that you can boot into windows in seconds and that you have the advantage while loading games, the MSI GE72VR Apache Pro-023 features a superfast M.2 solid state drive. But with only 256GB of storage space, this drive will fill up fast due to the size of modern games. Luckily MSI have also installed a 1TB 7200rpm mechanical hard drive for all of your storage needs. With a USB 3.1 Type-C port you will be ready for the next generation of gaming peripherals or you can attach an external GPU case if you want to ramp up your graphics with a desktop graphics card.

ASUS-ZenBook-Pro-UX501VW

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW 15.6-inch

Packing some high-end components inside a sturdy unibody chassis, the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW is designed to be an all-in-one solution for business users, graphics professionals and moderate gamers. The 15-inch Zenbook Pro has a simple yet elegant design with a silver finished aluminum construction with ASUS’s signature concentric ring on the outer lid. At 0.8 inches thick and weighing 5 pounds, it is a bit heavier and thicker than competitors like the Macbook Pro and Dell XPS 15, although it must be noted that the latter devices cost about $500 more while packing similar hardware. The keyboard on the Zenbook Pro offers a comfortable typing experience and it is complemented by a spacious palm rest which is also metal covered. Besides three USB 3.0 ports, this upgraded UX501VW features a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support. However, like many modern laptops, it is missing the miniDisplay port, Kensington Lock and Ethernet port. The laptop’s 15.6-inch touch screen supports a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, making it ideal for photo or video editors. Featuring an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, a whopping 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a fast 512GB SSD, the Zenbook Pro is able to meet your multimedia, productivity and everyday needs. You will also be able to run some modern games thanks to the dedicated NVIDIA GTX 960M GPU. While the previous Zenbook Pro had a meager 4 hours of battery life, the UX501VW lasted a solid 8 hours on Laptop Mag’s battery test.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 5 lbs

Pros

  • Metal chassis
  • UHD touch screen
  • Fast Quad-Core processor
  • Dedicated graphics
  • Fast USB-C connection

Cons

  • Heavier than some competitors
  • Glossy screen

Summary

The UX501VW’s glossy display and extra heft are minor shortcomings considering you are getting a UHD display, all-day battery life and an all metal unibody design for a lot less than the “pro” laptops from other manufacturers.

The ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 is a new kid on the block featuring a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3GB graphics card. This is our top pick for it’s price point. Although lacking in the SSD department found on many competing laptops, the 970M make a fairly significant jump in performance compared to the GeForce GTX 860M found on many competing models and is capable of maxing out almost all modern titles without breaking a sweat. Many users reported getting an SSD drive for added performance and reviews have been extremely positive despite a view defective units. On the up side, the included 1 TB is a 7200 RPM which is still faster than the stock standard if you aren’t keen on spending the extra bucks just yet. If you are on the hunt for the most powerful laptop you can get without breaking the $1500 barrier, look no further.

Acer-Aspire-V17-VN7-791G-792A-Nitro-Black-EditionAcer Aspire V17 VN7-791G-792A Nitro Black Edition 17.3-inch

The Acer Aspire V Nitro Black Edition VN7- 791G is a large screen laptop with a premium design and powerful hardware components to serve both as a business laptop and a gaming machine. It has a slim and sleek all-black chassis, which looks more professional than a typical gaming laptop. The section of the silver hinge is polished in soft matte black finish that feels more expensive than glossy surfaces on competing laptops. However, lacking a metallic unibody design, it is doesn’t feel as premium as a Macbook Pro. Still, it’s reasonably thin and light for its size. Round the edges of the casing lies a decent selection of ports including two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader and a DVD burner. It houses an Intel Core i7 4720HQ processor running at 2.6GHz. This is backed by 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a 256GB SSD. With such a powerful internal hardware, home as well as office users won’t have any issue with its performance. On the graphics side, there is an Nvidia Geforce GTX 960M, which is the latest mid-range graphics card. It can handle most games on high settings but more demanding upcoming titles may require some tweaks. This large size laptop is equipped with a full keyboard with backlighting, and it includes a dedicated numpad and a large touchpad. The Full-HD IPS panel is matte finished to prevent excessive glares and reflections, and delivers excellent viewing angles and accurate colors. The battery life of 4 hours will be disappointing if you are switching from your work laptop. The VN7-791G-792A is a great choice as a “portable” desktop-replacement for work or play.

Cons

The Acer Aspire V17 VN7-791G-792A demonstrates a professional look combined with powerful specs including a great display and an SSD, but its touchpad is unresponsive and the battery life is rather short.

The Alienware’s AW15R2-6161SLV combines powerful hardware with a premium design for a reasonable price. The chassis is constructed from carbon fibre and aluminum, which is designed not only to look premium but also to stand the test of time. Due to a number of LEDs on the surface, an attractive backlit keyboard and a glowing touchpad, it looks like it might have come from another planet. Though slimmer than its 17 and 18-inch brothers, it is fairly heavy at 3kg (6.6 pounds), and you’ll certainly notice its presence while carrying it in your backpack. Part of the reason why it manages to look classy despite its relatively low price is because it includes a Full-HD matte screen as opposed to an Ultra-HD display and a 970M graphics instead of the top-of-the-line 980M GPU. This 970M graphics working with the onboard Intel Core i7-6700HQ and 16GB of RAM will let you play majority of today’s game without a stutter. It is slightly more expensive than the 17-inch ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 but it’s more portable and it includes 128 GB of extra SSD storage, as well as a futuristic design which many gamers may find more appealing. If you are okay with a more modest design, take a look at the MSI above which costs $200 less but packs similar hardware. Overall, the AW15R2-6161SLV is pricier than its competitors but not by a large margin, and its premium design is well worth the investment for dedicated gamers.

MSI GT72VR 6RD Dominator-071 17.3-inchMSI GT72VR 6RD Dominator-071 17.3-inch

Built for gaming, the MSI GT72VR 6RD Dominator-071 is another great gaming laptop from the powerhouse company that is MSI. The new Dominator for 2016 now features NVIDIA’s 10-series graphics card for even more gaming performance. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 offers far better performance than its predecessor and this will make all the difference when it comes to those AAA gaming titles. The Pascal architecture has been developed for the next generation of VR gaming and will give you the edge over laptops running the older GTX 960M graphics card. A sixth generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ and 12GB of DDR4 RAM will allow you to run the latest AAA gaming titles with no lag and will even run hardware intensive design apps. However the 12GB of RAM can easily be upgraded to 16GB or even 32GB for better performance. While the 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for older games and multimedia files, the 128GB SSD is slightly small with some modern games requiring at least 40GB or more. Luckily this superfast M.2 solid state drive can easily be replaced with a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB SSD for superior storage space. Much like most of the higher-end MSI laptops, you get a Full-HD display. But despite the lack of a 4K display, you still get a display that offers rich colors and great viewing angles. The display also features G-SYNC which matches the display panel’s refresh rate to the frame rate of the graphics card for an impressive gaming experience. Overall the GT72VR 6RD Dominator-071 offers great hardware specs and luckily the tiny SSD can easily be replaced.

Acer Predator 15 G9-591-70VM 15.6-inchAcer Predator 15 G9-591-70VM 15.6-inch

Gaming laptop manufacturers are getting pretty aggressive with their designs in an attempt to out do their competition and Acer has dealt its hand with the Predator series. The Acer Predator 15 has a mean look and hardware to live up to its name. The Predator 15 features a powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz processor, 16GB of the new DDR4 RAM, a 128GB SSD for super fast boot up and load times as well as a 1TB HDD for storage. The FHD IPS display is bright and crystal clear with a wide viewing angle which is perfect for gaming. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M GPU handles most new games with relative ease on medium to high settings, however may struggle when settings like Anti-Aliasing or Antistropic Filtering are turned on. The battery life, as is typical of most gaming laptops, lasts a meagre 3 hours and to accommodate the cooling system the chassis is fairly thick and heavy compared to some of its rivals. The Predator looks great and performs just as well and should definitely be considered as your next gaming rig.

Cons

Razer Blade RZ09-01302E21-R3U1 14-inchRazer Blade RZ09-01302E21-R3U1 14-inch

Razer, while no stranger to the gaming peripheral market, are relatively new to the gaming laptop scene, but their deep knowledge of what gamers really want has resulted in an extremely successful range of gaming laptops. The Razer Blade RZ09-01302E21-R3U1 is the 2015 offering and with powerful specs like the Intel Core i7-4720HQ, 16GB of DDR3L RAM, 256GB of SSD storage and a potent NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M it’s clear to see why it’s been so popular amongst gamers. With a simple slender design paired with the green backlit keyboard and high resolution screen games are a pleasure. Thanks to the Dolby sound and great stereo speakers it offers an immersive multimedia experience too. With most gaming grade laptops we see a set of common problems such as heat and noise coupled with poor battery life and the 2015 Blade is not immune to these issues. The battery life maxes out at around 4.5 hours during normal use and the bottom of the unit tends to get quite hot resulting in the fans working overdrive which can be fairly noisy. Where this machine falls short it more than makes up with style, performance and quality hardware and is a great choice for users who can afford the premium price.

Acer Predator 17 X GX-791-73FH 17.3-inchAcer Predator 17 X GX-791-73FH 17.3-inch

The Predator range of laptops are among the top gaming laptops on the market today. With aggressive gaming looks and extremely powerful hardware, the Predator 17 X GX-791-73FH is designed for the hardcore gamer on the go. While many high-end gaming laptops use the mobile NVIDIA GTX GPUs, the Predator 17 X GX-791-73FH features a desktop grade GTX 980 that offers better performance than its mobile counterpart. While it may be a desktop GPU, it has been modified to allow it to be more power efficient and this has somewhat nerfed its potential performance. While it is not a deal breaker, this does mean that you can expect slightly lower frame rates compared to the same card in a desktop PC. However you will easily and effortlessly be able to enjoy your favorite games such as Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and The Witcher on ultra settings. Powering this behemoth of a laptop is a Skylake-based Intel Core i7-6820HK unlocked processor and a massive 32GB of DDR4 2133MHz of RAM. The processor has an unlocked multiplier and can easily be overclocked, which gives it a massive advantage of the standard i7-6700HQ that is commonly found in most high-end gaming laptops. Despite its effective cooling system, you should proceed with caution when overclocking your CPU. All your storage needs are taken care of by the 1TB 7200rpm mechanical drive and the superfast 512GB solid state drive configured in RAID 0. The SSD will allow you to easily install most of your games, but with the size of newer games you can consider replacing the SATA drive with a 1TB SSD to ensure that all of your games run at peak performance.

The Intel Core i7-6820HK has a lower clock speed than the i7-6700HQ, but with its unlocked multiplier it is easier to overclock and can be overclocked to a higher frequency. The Full-HD display offers rich colors, wide viewing angles and G-Sync, but only has a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. Reviews have praised the G752VY for its low temperatures and low fan noise levels thanks to its cleverly designed cooling system. It also comes with a Dust-release thermal solution, which is meant to prevent dust from building up on the internal components. The battery life is rather poor and no real improvements have been made from its predecessor, but the ASUS G752VY-DH78K larger size makes it a perfect desktop replacement.

MSI GT72 DOMINATOR PRO-444 17.3-inch

The MSI GT72 DOMINATOR Pro-444 17.3-inch borrows essential design traits of its predecessor, the GT70, with only minor adjustments including a slightly thinner design which appears less outdated. Much of its improvements have been made under the hood. It features the same large 17-inch display resting on a bulky chassis made of durable matte aluminum. The color is primarily black with red accents around the bottom edges, and the keyboard backlight can be customized with a range of colors. The design is attractive but understated compared to the Alienware 17. At around 8 pounds it makes a fine desktop replacement but may make an overbearing travel companion. To make good use of its size, it includes a total of six USB 3.0 ports, a DVD SuperMulti drive, an SD Cardreader, an Ethernet jack, HDMI output and two Displayport plugs in case you want to setup a multi-screen workstation (or Playstation / Xbox). It’s spec sheet includes an Intel Core i7-4710HQ CPU, 32GB of DDR3L RAM, a 1TB hard drive with an additional 1TB SSD and NVIDIA’s latest GeForce GTX 980M GPU with 8GB of Video RAM. Expect to play almost any game at nothing but the highest settings. On the display front, it has 1080p 17.3-inch display, a standard among high-end gaming rigs, but it’s a TN display means games and Blu-ray movies will suffer if your screen is viewed from the side and overall image reproduction might not be quite as crisp as on more high-end IPS panels. The Dynaudio speakers let’s you hear some of the best sound you’ve ever heard on a laptop. Furthermore, the battery life can be enhanced by switching the GPU to integrated graphics, letting you browse the web for over 4.5 hours unplugged.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 2.5 hours battery life
  • 8.4 lbs

  • Runs Cool

  • Battery Life

Alienware ANW17-7500SLV 17.3-Inch

Alienware laptops have always been recognized by their out-of-this world look. Similar the new Alienware 17 bears slightly aggressive appearance attributed to its dominating silver and black color, high-quality matte aluminum frame, and several light effects extending from the outer lid to the keyboard backlit. The entire surface attracts little to no fingerprints. If you want a modest design, check out the MSI and ASUS gaming laptops which have lesser flare. Thanks to a large chassis, there are plenty of ports with a total of five USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, an SD Card reader, a mini Display port and an HDMI port. It also comes with a game changing technology which lets you connect desktop graphics to your laptop via a graphics amplifier. So even if the installed graphics card becomes old, you can add any desktop card, which makes it virtually future proof. Even without the amp, it is still a powerful gaming laptop boasting a GTX 980M GPU with 4GB DDR5 VRAM, a Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor and 16GB of RAM, which lets you play the latest games at ultra high settings. Its storage is a slight let down because it’s a slower 1TB 5400 RPM hard drive, although there’s a 128GB SSD for speeding up the loading times of Windows and other installed applications if you use it as your primary hard drive. Another minor flaw is its muddy audio which not as good as many competitors. Running almost 6 hours with the Wi-Fi on, its battery life is one of the longest we’ve seen on a 17-inch gaming laptop. All in all, if you want a no-compromise gaming laptop to replace your desktop, the Alienware 17 ANW17-7500SLV  is one of the most glorious options here.
