Apple MacBook 5K4M2LL/A 12-InchApple MacBook 5K4M2LL/A 12-Inch

The latest version of the MacBook replaced the old 13-inch version in 2015. Being much lighter and thinner than its predecessors, it seems to share more similarities with the MacBook Air than with the older MacBook range. The elegant brushed aluminum that has come to signify Apple’s laptops complements the new thinner and lighter design. Replacing the previous generations Intel Core i5 and i7 processors is a Dual-Core Intel Core M processor. Being 50% smaller than other Intel processors and not requiring a fan for cooling, the Core M allows for the new MacBook to be a mere 0.52-inches thick. Backing up the Intel Core M-5Y70 processor is 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM that helps conserve power and allows the new MacBook to offer an average battery life of over 14 hours. While the processor is not the most powerful on the market, the new MacBook is not really intended for power users, who should rather look at a MacBook Pro. The lightning fast 256GB solid state drive will allow Mac OS X to boot in seconds and will offer enough space to store personal and work documents. But if you have a larger multimedia collection, then you will have to look at upgrading to a larger PCIe drive or look at an external hard drive. The 12-inch display offers an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio and an unusual resolution of 2304×1440. Like some of Apple’s more premium machines the new MacBook comes standard with a Retina display which offers rich colors and great image quality. One of the biggest criticisms of the new MacBook is that it only features one USB 3.1 Type-C port. This means purchasing an adapter to be able to connect a standard USB device or connect an external monitor or TV via HDMI.

Specs

  • 12 inch, 2304 x 1440 pixels (IPS)
  • Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite
  • 14 hours battery life
  • 2.03 lbs

Pros

  • Excellent battery life
  • Thin and light
  • 256GB SSD
  • Brilliant Retina display

Cons

  • No USB Type-C adapter included
  • One USB Type-C port
  • No optical drive

Summary

The new MacBook is perfect for Mac users who are after a thin and light laptop that can offer a 14 hour battery life, making it great for travelling professionals. But it only comes with a single USB 3.1 Type-C port that makes it less convenient than its predecessor.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 CR5-00001 12.3-inchMicrosoft Surface Pro 4 CR5-00001 12.3-inch

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has seen massive improvements from the original Surface Pro that was launched a few years ago. The ultra thin aluminum design weighs in at an impressive 1.73 pounds without the keyboard, making it perfect for users after a powerful and compact 2-in-1 laptop. But Microsoft still does not offer the Surface Pro with a keyboard as a default accessory and you will have to purchase it separately. While there are cheaper third party options, we recommend two of the Genuine Microsoft keyboards, the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover or the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with Fingerprint ID. While the keyboard is not included, you do get a stylus to navigate around Windows 10 and for basic drawing and design tasks. The onscreen keyboard can be used and is quite responsive, but it does take up valuable space on your display, which might annoy some users. The Surface Pro is powered by an Intel Skylake Core i5-6300U processor and 4GB of RAM, which allows for snappy performance when it comes to basic tasks. While the i5 processor will handle more intensive multitasking, the 4GB of RAM does limit its overall performance and cannot be upgraded at all. The battery life offers between 7-9 hours off of a single charge and this will allow you to use it comfortably throughout a normal workday or while on a long haul flight. The 128GB solid state drive allows the Surface Pro 4 CR5-00001 to boot in seconds and offers fast performance. You can extend the 128GB of storage space with a microSD card, giving you up to an additional 256GB of storage. The display offers crisp colors and great viewing angles. The responsiveness of the 10-finger multi-touch screen is among the best on the market and will not leave you disappointed.

Specs

  • 12.3 inch, 2736 x 1824 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 1.73 lbs

Pros

  • Intel Skylake processor
  • Good battery life
  • Crisp and responsive touchscreen
  • Windows 10 Pro

Cons

  • Only 4GB of RAM
  • No physical keyboard included
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Underpowered for designers

Summary

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 CR5-00001 offers a great performance for its compact size, but you will have to purchase the keyboard separately and the 4GB of RAM hurt its overall performance with heavy multitasking.

ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 13.3-InchASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 13.3-Inch

Ultraportable laptops such as the Apple MacBook Air have become ever more popular for travellers and office professionals who are constantly bouncing between meetings. But if you are not an Apple fan and want a good ultraportable laptop that runs Windows 10, then the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 is worth considering for its attractive price. The elegant aluminum unibody design weighs in at just 2.9 pounds and is a mere half an inch thick. Powering this compact ultrabook is a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U ultra low wattage processor and 8GB of DDR3L RAM, this allows the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 to easily run your everyday run of the mill apps. The downside is that the 8GB of RAM is soldered to the mainboard and cannot be upgraded so you will have to make do with the installed RAM. Its super fast solid state drive will mean that you will be able to boot up Windows 10 in a matter of seconds and your apps will launch way faster than with traditional hard drives. With 256GB of storage space, you shouldn’t have any issues when it comes to storing your work or personal files, but it is slightly limiting for those users who have larger multimedia collections. The Full-HD IPS display offers great viewing angles and crisp image quality for all your web browsing and video streaming needs. You also get a great 97% sRGB gamut coverage, which makes the ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 great for designers and photo editors. Something that is slightly disappointing is that you don’t get a backlit keyboard, which is something that we usually expect from ultrabooks.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.86 lbs

Pros

  • Great battery life
  • Thin and light SSD
  • Intel Skylake processor
  • Full-HD matte display

Cons

  • RAM cannot be upgraded
  • No full size HDMI port
  • No backlit keyboard

Summary

The ASUS ZenBook UX305UA AS51 offers users a thin and light laptop that can easily be carried on a daily basis. But the RAM cannot be upgraded and you will have to settle for the installed 8GB of memory.

Apple MMGF2LLA MacBook Air 13.3-InchApple MMGF2LL/A MacBook Air 13.3-Inch

The latest MacBook Air retains the slim and light unibody form featured on the original 2010 model. It still looks genuinely attractive thanks to a solid aluminum shell. Opening the lid, you’ll find a sleek keyboard with black island-style keys which has also remained unchanged since last year. The trackpad is also unchanged so it doesn’t support the Force Touch technology found in the new MacBook Pro. Apple has been criticized for not bumping its 1440 x 900 screen to Full-HD. However, the screen is sufficiently bright and clear for productivity users who are the primary users of the Air. Photoshop experts and videophiles can benefit more from the MacBook Pro which includes a higher-resolution Retina display, a more powerful processor, a bigger memory and a better graphics card. The Intel Core i5-5250U not only carries out modest tasks with ease but preserves the battery life so that it runs for more than 12 hours. While the 2015 model only featured 4GB of RAM, the 2016 model comes standard with 8GB of RAM for more hardware intensive apps. The Air also features a faster flash storage and the new Thunderbolt 2 interface. However, despite these upgrades, the performance boost is not very significant over previous models. That said, if you still have the old 2015 MacBook Air, then we recommend hanging onto it until Apple release an updated version with significant changes. However, if you’re in need of an affordable and durable ultrabook, the latest MacBook Air is definitely one of the top options in its category despite lacking a Full-HD display thanks to its paper thin design and exceptional battery life.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1440 x 900 pixels (TN)
  • Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan
  • 2.96 lbs

Pros

  • Ultra thin and light
  • Great performance
  • Very long battery life

Cons

  • Low resolution screen
  • None upgradeable

Summary

A super thin and light MacBook with incredibly fast boot and load times. The resolution could have been higher but more modern versions of the Air have better resolutions.

ASUS-F555UA-EH71

ASUS F555UA-EH71 15.6-Inch

The ASUS F555UA-EH71 features a modern design with powerful hardware to deliver smooth performance all around. Its body has a black textured finish which looks classy and acts as a protective coating against smudges and scratches. It has a clean look on the inside as well with a textured palm rest and a spacious keyboard. The touchpad supports smart gesture for intuitive and accurate fingertip input. It weighs just 5.1 pounds while including an optical drive, which is lighter than most other 15-inch competitors even without optical drives included. It includes all standard connectivity ports including two USB 3.0 ports which transfers data 10 times faster than USB 2.0. ASUS has also enhanced its audio with SonicMaster technology which uses various codecs to deliver clear sounds at every audio level. Its 15-inch screen has a matte coating to minimize glare and reflections, but it supports only 1366 x 768 pixels resolution. However, the viewing angles as well as color accuracy are fairly optimal. The F554LA features powerful internal hardware that includes a Sixth gen Intel Core i7-6500U 2.5GHz processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB Hard Drive. While there are premium laptops that are far more powerful, for the price these are very good specs that will handle all of your basic computing tasks with ease and also some more heavy duty photo and video editing applications. Besides multitasking, HD video playback and running heavy programs, the Core i7 processor coupled with the Intel HD Graphics 520 can also handle modern games at lower settings. If you want a high-end laptop but don’t want extra features like super sharp panel or a fully metallic design, the ASUS F555UA-EH71  offers a great price to performance ratio.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (IPS)
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 5.1 lbs

Pros

  • Mare than adequate RAM
  • Fast processor
  • Fair amount of storage
  • Plenty of ports

Cons

  • No dedicated graphics

Lenovo Yoga 710 80U00006US 15.6-inchLenovo Yoga 710 80U00006US 15.6-inch

When it comes to convertible laptops, the Yoga line is among the best on the market. The Lenovo Yoga 710 features a lightweight aluminum design that not only looks brilliant, but it will also withstand the abuse of travelling or college. To keep the Yoga 710 as thin as possible, Lenovo have not included an optical drive and you will have to purchase an external drive if you need to use CD’s or DVD’s. This is not really a deal breaker as most media and apps can be found online these days. The Lenovo Yoga 710 features a Skylake-based Intel Core i5-6200U processor and 8GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which will offer good performance for everyday tasks and will even be able to handle more intensive photo and video editing apps. The Lenovo Yoga 710 also features a super fast solid state drive that will allow you to boot into Windows in seconds and offers far better performance than standard laptop hard drives. While the 256GB of storage space is enough for work and college files, it can fill up quickly if you intend on storing a large amount of multimedia files on the Lenovo Yoga 710. The display offers rich colors and great viewing angles thanks to its In-plane switching technology. The display also offers support for multi-touch interaction and is very responsive when navigating around Windows or your favorite web browser. The display also features a 360 degree hinge that will allow you to convert the Lenovo Yoga 710 into a tablet style PC in a matter of seconds. But if you want to connect the Lenovo Yoga 710 to your HDTV, then you will have to purchase an adapter as it does not feature a full size HDMI port.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 4.19 lbs

Pros

  • Thin and light

  • SSD
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • No full size HDMI port
  • Only two USB ports
  • No optical drive
  • No Ethernet

Summary

The Lenovo Yoga 710 is a thin and light convertible laptop that offers decent hardware and great battery life for travelling professionals or college students. But the Lenovo Yoga 710 doesn’t feature an optical drive or a full size HDMI port.

While not as popular or as fresh as our current top picks, these laptops are still excellent choices for shoppers serious about exploring all possible options before making a purchasing decision.

Dell XPS 9350-1340SLV 13.3-inchDell XPS 9350-1340SLV 13.3-inch

The XPS (Xtreme Performance System) range from Dell has always featured laptops with great hardware and sleek designs. The 9000 series is Dell’s latest XPS range and the 9350-1340SLV offers a futuristic and elegant look with a near bezel-less display, brushed aluminum covers and a carbon fibre palm rest and keyboard bezel. Powered by Skylake Intel Core i5-6200U processor and 8GB of RAM, the XPS 9350-1340SLV will easily cope with any day-to-day tasks with ease. Its solid state drive offers lighting fast speeds for booting up Windows and for launching apps. But the 128GB of storage space is very limiting and users will have to use an external storage drive to store their media and photos as swapping out the drives is not an easy undertaking for the average user. While the more expensive XPS 9000 series feature QHD+ and 4K displays, the 9350-1340SLV only has a maximum resolution of 1920×1080. But its display still manages to offer vivid colors and allows for wide viewing angles. While the more expensive XPS laptops come fitted with touchscreen displays the 9350-1340SLV is non-touch, but this is not a deal breaker at its price point. To save on weight Dell left off an optical drive which has brought down the weight to just 2.8lbs, making the XPS 9350-1340SLV perfect for users who are constantly on the go. While Dell has added Thunderbolt to the XPS 9350-1340SLV, they have also removed the full sized HDMI port, meaning users will have to purchase an adaptor separately in order to connect their laptop to an external monitor or TV.

ASUS ZenBook UX303UA 13.3-Inch

ASUS ZenBook UX303UA 13.3-Inch

The Zenbook range by ASUS has become very popular over the years thanks to its slim stylish design, great performance and long battery life. The ZenBook UX303UA is the new addition to the family and it definitely lives up to the family’s reputation. A gorgeous 13.3-inch Full HD IPS display delivers sharp images with the help of the the Intel HD Graphics 520. ASUS SonicMasters audio delivers good sound quality but, as is typical with most laptops, it struggles with the lower frequency ranges. The latest generation Intel Skylake Core i56200U processor running at 2.3GHz makes multitasking and more demanding applications run with ease. As this machine is not suitable for gaming due to the integrated Intel graphics the 8GB of DDR3L RAM is sufficient. Users were not impressed however with the poor build quality saying the machine felt cheaply manufactured and did not sit flush on a flat surface. The hinges felt a bit wobbly and the edges did not feel well finished. Another negative is that while the IPS FHD display is great indoors, the glossy finish can create some glare in brighter conditions. All negatives aside this is a stylish, ultra portable machine that performs well when throwing even the most demanding of tasks at it.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • 7 hours battery life
  • 3.3 lbs

Pros

  • FHD IPS LED backlit display
  • Large SSD
  • Fast performance
  • Good battery life

Cons

  • Build quality feels a bit cheap
  • Touchscreen can be unresponsive at times

Apple-MacBook-Air-MJVG2LL-A-13.3-Inch

Apple MacBook Air MJVG2LL/A 13.3-inch

As with Apple’s Macbook Pro line, the 2015 Macbook Air’s design has largely remained unchanged in the last four years. Apple has always been ahead of its time when it came to design and the Air is no exception with its outer aluminum shell still besting most competitors in terms of raw aesthetics by today’s standards. Once you open the lid, you will notice that the internal layout looks quite outdated. The Air has large bezels surrounding its screen so on the inside feels less-premium than the latest ultrabooks with edge-to-edge displays. Furthermore, Full-HD resolution and touchscreen feature have almost become standard on modern Windows notebooks but the Air has a 1,440 x 900 resolution non-touch screen. Onboard it has a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 256GB SSD storage. Specs are kept mid-level because the Air is designed for productivity users who prefer a lightweight laptop with exceptional battery life over a bulky powerhouse. It also performs well on mid-level tasks like programming and photo editing, although the 4GB RAM prevents it from running very large applications. The onboard Intel HD 6000 graphics can handle some modern games at low to medium settings but you’ll have to spend over $2000 if you want a Mac with serious gaming hardware. All in all this, highly acclaimed laptop is a sure win for users who value raw portability and a paper thin design over performance, although power users and those looking for the most value for money may want to look elsewhere.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1440 x 900 pixels (TN)
  • Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite
  • 12 hours battery life
  • 3 lbs

Pros

  • Very long battery life
  • Super thin and light
  • Ultra fast bootup and load times
  • Great specs
  • Backlit keyboard

Cons

  • Touchpad can be tricky for Windows users

Summary

Apples answer to the netbook the Macbook Air is fast light and ultra portable. With boot up times of around 15 seconds and almost instant load times this is a no brainer for users on the move. The near 11 hour battery life is also a fantastic plus.

Acer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 13.3-inchAcer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 13.3-inch

The sleek design and white shell give the Acer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 an elegant high-end look and feel. The next generation USB 3.1 Type-C will allow for a host of new superfast devices to be connected. Sporting an Intel Core i5-6200U and 6GB of RAM, the Acer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 will cope with multitasking with ease. But for more intensive multitasking we recommend upgrading the RAM to 16GB for increased performance. The 256GB solid state drive offers lightning fast app loading speeds, but the 256GB of storage is a bit small for modern multimedia file sizes. The Full-HD display offers vivid colors and great image quality, but the bezel around the display is slightly larger. In-plane switching panels are usually only found on more expensive laptops and the Acer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 IPS’s panel offers great viewing angles. But when setting the resolution to 1920 x 1080, all the icons and menus will be quite small for the 13.3-inch display. While it is not designed to be a gaming laptop, the Acer Aspire V13 V3-372T-5051 can run basic games thanks to its Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU. But users can connect an external GPU dock to run the latest popular gaming titles.

Pros

Cons

Toshiba-Satellite Fusion-15-L55W-C5259

Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 15.6-inch

The Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 is a low cost version of the Satellite Radius P55T featuring mid-range hardware and sturdy plastic construction. Featuring the same 360 degree hinge like the Radius, the Fusion is also capable of transforming into a tablet by folding the screen all the way back. Besides tablet mode, it can be used in tent, presentation and stand modes. Physically, it is a sleek and slim device with a glossy plastic surface that resembles brushed aluminum. Along the left edge, there is a windows key, a volume rocker and a USB 2.0 port. On the right edge there are two USB 3.0 ports, an SD-card reader and an HDMI port with 4k output. The 15.6-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels offering vivid colors and sharp details. The IPS panel is also excellent for off-axis viewing thanks to a wide viewing angle. Whether it’s movies, music or games, the built-in Skullcandy stereo speakers deliver powerful and crisp audio. The laptop carries a fifth generation Intel Core i5-5100U dual-core processor with Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics coupled with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD storage. This hardware configuration results in faster boot time and stellar performance for everyday tasks, multitasking and basic gaming. According to Toshiba, the laptop offers up to 7 hours of battery life. The laptop runs the latest Windows 10 operating system which according to reviewers is faster and more responsive than Windows 8.1. All in all, the Satellite Fusion is designed for someone who wants a large screen convertible with a thin profile. Weighing over 5 pounds, it is not as travel friendly as the Lenovo Yoga pro 13 or ASUS Zenbook X303LA, but the extra screen real-estate is more practical for movies, spreadsheets and photo editing.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)

Pros

  • Fast SSD storage
  • Slim and light

Cons

Summary

Dell Inspiron 13 i7348-7143SLV 15.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron 13 7000  with its aluminum shell and high quality finish has the looks to match its price tag. Despite a metallic build, it is quite light and will travel comfortably packed inside your backpack. The build gets slimmer at the sides which gives the appearance of looking quite a bit thinner than many of its competitors. To supplement its portability, it has a long battery life capable of lasting a full day off charge. The keyboard is full-sized with the keys properly spaced out for improved accuracy and an added backlight for easy typing in poor lighting and impressing friends. Its responsive touchscreen works well with the touch-friendly Windows 8.1 OS and upcoming Windows 10. Its display is a 15.6-inch IPS panel boasting Full-HD resolution and good color accuracy, brightness and viewing angles. In terms of speed this is a very fast machine packing a 5th Generation Intel Core i7-5500U Processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSDHard Drive. However, with an integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics, you are restricted to playing games at low settings. It comes with all standard connectivity options including USB 3.0 ports, Bluetooth 4.0 and an HDMI port. While streaming music or movies you can expect loud and clear audio from its speakers, but don’t expect the same quality as a desktop sound system. All in all Dell Inspiron 13 7000 at is a great value for money convertible with an attractive design and solid performance

Specs

ASUS ZenBook UX305CA-EHM1 13.3-Inch laptopASUS ZenBook UX305CA-EHM1 13.3-Inch

If you are after a sleek and light laptop with a full aluminum body, then the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA is well worth a look. With excellent battery life, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA is the perfect companion for users who need their laptop to last an entire day and the small form factor means it can easily be slipped into a backpack or a handbag. The Intel Core m3-6Y30 CPU is a highly efficient Skylake processor that offers good performance for day-to-day tasks, but it will struggle with more intensive multitasking, as it only has two cores. The pre-installed 8GB of RAM will be more than enough to run most apps, including Photoshop. The solid state drive offers lightning fast boot and app loading speeds for when you need it most, giving you the ability to open spreadsheets and work documents within seconds. With 256GB of storage space, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA offers users enough space for storing work documents and a bit of multimedia, but users who need more storage space should look at a cloud based storage solution or an external hard drive. The Full-HD IPS display offers vivid colors and great image quality, with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. The In-panel switching technology offers great viewing angles and means that you won’t have to tilt the screen every time you move around while watching videos. One thing that is lacking is the addition of a backlit keyboard. This means that working in low light situations can be a bit annoying.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home

HP Pavilion 13-s128nr x360 13.3-Inch

HP Pavilion 13-s128nr x360 13.3-Inch

The HP Pavilion 13-s128nr x360 not only offers good value for your money but also versatility with its 2-in-1 design. Running an Intel Core i5-6200U CPU, 8GB of DDR3L RAM and a 128GB SSD, this HP packs plenty of power for your daily computing needs. The display is sharp and clear at 1080p and thanks to the IPS technology is viewable from almost any angle. The B&O sound with stereo speakers delivers crisp and rich audio although lacking in the bass department slightly. The battery life is great clocking in at around the 7 hour mark thanks to the very efficient Intel processor. With only 128GB of storage, users will need an external hard drive to store personal files and media as Windows 10 takes up a significant portion of this. One of the only other gripes users had was the way the machine felt awkward in the user’s hands when in tablet form. Some older games will run thanks to the Intel HD 520 GPU however newer games will struggle if they manage to run. The HP Pavilion 13-s128nr x360 is a great all around machine that offers versatility as well as great performance.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • 11.25 hours battery life
  • 3.8 lbs

Pros

  • Good specs
  • Stylish 2-in-1 design
  • Good battery life
  • FHD IPS display

Cons

  • Tablet mode is awkward
  • Low amount of storage space

Summary

A great 2-in-1 device with a crystal clear IPS display although tablet mode does feel awkward and would be better as a standard laptop.

Lenovo Thinkpad 13 13.3-inch laptopLenovo Thinkpad 13 13.3-inch

Lenovo took over a legacy from one of the oldest names in the industry, IBM. The Thinkpad name has always been synonymous for rugged business laptops and the new Thinkpad 13 is no different. Offering great security features such as TPM encryption as a standard and users can add both a fingerprint reader and Windows 10 Pro for only $40 extra. The 6th generation Intel Core i3-6100U processor is backed by 4GB of RAM and will easily cope with basic day-to-day tasks with ease, but we do recommend that users look at upgrading the RAM to 8GB for better performance. The base model comes with a fairly average 1366 x 768 TN display, but Lenovo does allow you to upgrade to a Full-HD IPS display for only $55, which is well worth its price. The Full-HD display offers far better colors, image quality and viewing angles. Offering next generation hardware, the Thinkpad 13 features both Bluetooth 4.1, AC WiFi and USB 3.1 Type-C for faster connectivity. While the base model does come standard with a superfast M.2 solid state drive, it only offers 256GB of storage space. But Lenovo does allow you to upgrade the SSD to 512GB of storage space for an extra $140. If you have owned a Thinkpad in the past then you will love to know that the new Thinkpad 13 still comes with the TrackPoint pointing stick for quick and effortless navigation of Windows 10 and your apps.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • 11 hours battery life
  • 3.2 lbs

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • M.2 SSD
  • TrackPoint pointing stick
  • Battery life
  • USB 3.1 Type-C

Cons

  • No Ethernet port
  • No optical drive
  • 4GB of RAM
  • Low brightness levels

Summary

The Thinkpad 13 is a rugged and light business laptop from Lenovo, but the base model is not too impressive for its price and users should look at customizing their order to improve the Thinkpads features.

Dell-XPS13-9343-13.3-inch

Dell XPS13-9343 13.3-inch

Dell’s latest ultrabook XPS13-9343 features one of the thinnest screen bezels we’ve ever seen, making even the top selling 13-inch Macbook Air look outdated. Its other design traits are also praiseworthy including a matte aluminum finish that gives a cold metallic feel when touched. Sticking to its professional tone, it has minimalistic looking all-black surfaces under the lid. The hinge is tight to prevent the screen from wobbling while typing and the carbon fiber palm rests feel firm with no sign of flexing while applying pressure. There is not much space between the screen and the bezel, meaning side-by-side this laptop will look much smaller and compact than your average 13-inch laptops. However, due to this smaller form factor, features like a dedicated number pad, Ethernet, HDMI and VGA port are excluded. If you really need them, you can purchase a separate adapter which comes with all of these ports for an additional fee. The 1920×1080 pixels on its 13-inch display look incredibly sharp and it’s matte so you won’t have any glare outdoors. If you’re willing to pay more and settle for less than 10 hours of battery life, you can also get an upgraded 3K resolution version of the XPS 13. With an Intel Core i5-5200U CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD, its specs are decent but its overall performance won’t be blowing its competitors out of the water. You can get more out of this system if you add another 8GB of RAM. However, this laptop is designed for general purpose use for business, office and school and not for graphics-intensive tasks, with a clear focus on design and portability.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.6 lbs

Pros

  • Modern stylish design
  • Great performance
  • High build quality

Cons

  • Webcam at the bottom of the screen
  • Requires adapter for HDMI, VGA and Ethernet

Summary

An extremely thin and portable device for the professional on the go.

ASUS-Zenbook-UX305LA-AB51

ASUS Zenbook UX305LA-AB51 13.3-Inch

The ASUS Zenbook UX305LA-AB51 is an ultraportable notebook with an all-aluminum body, curved edges, metal bezel and a single horizontal hinge. The titanium gold color complements the high-quality feel of the device. Despite the metallic design, it weighs only 2.8 pounds and is less than .6-inch thin. It is very sturdily constructed and doesn’t show any sign of flex. It has a unibody design so any kind of maintenance will require removal of the entire bottom cover. The bottom half has a wedged shaped design that gets thinner at the front, but despite its slimness it fits a healthy amount of ports along the edges. On the left, there is an SD card slot and two USB 3.0 ports. There is a third USB port on the right along with micro-HDMI, an audio jack and a power connector. Access to LAN is provided by the included USB 3.0 to Ethernet dongle. The Zenbook UX305LA has a sharp 1920 x 1080 IPS matte display with reduced glare to avoid catching heavy reflections. Both color accuracy and viewing angles are optimum, comparable to any high quality IPS panels. Powered by an Intel Core i5-5100U processor combined with 8GB of RAM and a fast 256GB SSD, this system will provide a lag free Windows experience even while multitasking. The integrated Intel HD graphics 5500 makes it possible to run less powerful games at high settings. Thanks to the power efficient CPU, on moderate use, this laptop easily lasts 7 hours on battery. All in all, if you want the fast performance and ultra-slim form factor of a mid-range Macbook Air for cheap, the UX305LA-AB51 is a great Windows alternative.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 2.86 lbs

Pros

  • Great performance

ASUS-Zenbook-UX305FA-ASM1-13.3-Inch

ASUS Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 13.3-Inch

For just $699, the ZenBook UX305 offers a superslim profile, an all day battery life and sufficient internal hardware for handling tasks at home or the office. Focusing on simplicity, the UX305’s design doesn’t include any unwanted modifications. Except for the speaker grills, the bottom itself is almost completely smoothed out thanks to a fanless design. It’s entirely made of aluminum and feels elegant inside and out. Colored deep stone color with a hint of purple, it stands out from the crowd of black, grey and silver metal casings on most competitors. The design is further complemented by a sleek black chiclet keyboard with an extra wide touchpad. It has a bright Full-HD Matte screen with a wide 180-degree viewing angle, which offers better outdoor visibility than the glossy panels found on many competitors. This unit comes with an Intel Core M 5Y10 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. The processor clocks at only 1GHz but the real world usage shows that it’s capable of doing mainstream tasks as well as some multitasking without any problems. The power efficient processor also keeps the core temperature low and ensures 10 hours of battery under normal use. Most ultrabooks at this price come with lower-end integrated graphics, but the UX305’s Intel HD 5300 is relatively new and can handle casual games fairly well at medium graphics. Despite its small waistline, it squeezes all possible ports and that too in good number by including three USB 3.0 ports, a micro HDMI, an SD card reader and a DC-in port.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 2.5 lbs

Pros

  • Thin and light
  • Aluminum chassis
  • long battery life
  • Full HD screen

Cons

  • Performance lacks for more demanding apps

Summary

With the main focus by Asus on this machine being portability users might struggle slightly with more high end applications. That being said this is still a fantastic portable and reliable laptop.

HP Envy 15T-L4R36AV-1 15.6-inch

HP Envy 15T-L4R36AV-1 15.6-inch

The HP Envy series has been incredibly successful delivering quality laptops at very competitive pricing and the 15T-L4R36AV-1 is no exception with its 6th generation Quad-Core Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU running at 2.6GHz and generous 16GB of DDR3 RAM. For storage HP has included a massive 2TB hard disk drive to ensure free space will never be much of a problem. To give the Envy its premium feel HP has made the chassis out of aluminium and added great features such as the fingerprint reader for extra security as well as the backlit keyboard for convenience in darker conditions. The display runs Full HD 1080p resolution and while not IPS delivers acceptable colors and a decent contrast ratio. The touchpad feels a bit clunky and the battery life leaves much to be desired. The HP Envy 15T-L4R36AV-1 delivers excellent sound quality thanks the the Bang & Olufsen integrated sound. We recommend this machine for users who need to run resource heavy tasks such as photo or video editing and users who are looking for an immersive multimedia experience.

ASUS-Transformer-Book-Flip-TP500LA-DS71T

ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA-DS71T 15.6-inch

With a brushed aluminum lid colored in anthracite, the ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA-DS71T is stylish looking laptop. There is also metal surrounding the keyboard and matte aluminum on the palm rest area. The bottom cover, made of black plastic, provides firm grip to prevent slips. At first glance, it doesn’t look that different from other 15.6-inch touchscreen laptops, but it can be quickly transformed into a tablet thanks to an attached 360 degree hinge. Besides tablet mode, presentation mode and tent mode are also supported. A preinstalled app detects your current mode and disables the keyboard and the touchpad as needed. While competitors like the Dell Inspiron I734 feature crisper Full-HD screens, ASUS have only provided a 1366 x 768 resolution display. That said, users will find this trade off acceptable once they peek inside its hardware. Powered by the latest Fifth Generation Intel Core i7-5500U 2.4GHz with 8GB of RAM, the TP500LA is much faster than competing hybrids, most of which feature slower Core i5 processors. It can handle multi-tasking just as well as simple spreadsheets. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 is also good enough to play less intensive games. The low voltage processor consumes low energy, letting you work on battery for more than 6 hours. As opposed to the standard 500GB storage, it features a much larger 1TB hard drive, which is adequate for installing large applications and storing lots of media files. All in all, despite a mediocre display, the TP500LA-DS71T is a reasonably priced laptop with the speed, durability and fast touchscreen response of many costlier convertibles.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

  • Great battery life

Cons

Dell-Inspiron-15-5000-5558-6433SLV-15.6-inch

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 I5558-6433SLV

The I5558-6433SLV is a new release in Dell’s Inspiron 5000 series featuring updated Intel hardware and a more premium design that older models. Its silver colored chassis has a brushed metal finish across the lid, sides and some part of the matte black plastic spanning the screen bezels, keyboard deck and wrist rest. The build quality is consistent throughout, there’s no sign of flexing and the screen is fixed firmly on the hinge. Maintaining this unit is also easy because two screws have to be removed to lift the base panel and access the internal hardware. Its port selections include three USBs, an HDMI port, and an Ethernet port alongside an SD card reader. Featuring a tray loading DVD burner and a large 15.6-inch screen, it is heavier and less compact than competing ultrabooks and convertibles. The notebook also doesn’t have the best battery life, lasting just 4 hours with heavy use and longer when the brightness is lowered. However, its specs is one of the best you’ll find at this price range. The Inspiron 5000 comes with an Intel Core i7 5500U processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage In other words, the system offers sufficient power for daily purpose as well as more demanding applications and multitasking. The NVIDIA GeForce 920M dedicated graphics is better than most integrated graphics for casual gaming. The 1,366 x 768 resolution display is a disappointment considering most laptops at this price have a full HD panel. The lack of a Full-HD display and touchscreen function, gives the Inspiron 5000 a price advantage but keeps it a step below most premium laptops. If you can live without a higher quality display, then the Inspiron 5000 is a powerful all-round laptop that is definitely worth the price for its reasonable build quality and high-end hardware.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)

SAMSUNG NP900X3L-K06US 13.3-inch

The SAMSUNG NP900X3L-K06US is a compact all-purpose laptop that offers great performance in a 13.3-inch package and weighs in at a light 1.87 pounds. It is powered by an Intel Core i5-6200U processor that is backed by 8GB of RAM and an M.2 256GB solid state drive for lightning fast booting and app launching. The integrated Intel HD 520 graphics can run older titles with acceptable frame rates, but newer titles will struggle even on the lowest of settings. Being an all-purpose laptop for work and multimedia the small 13-inch form factor allows the SAMSUNG NP900X3L-K06US to fit easily in most carry-on luggage and at 0.53-inches thick it is one of the thinnest laptops on the market. The display offers great viewing angles and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 which adds to the sleek design. A backlit keyboard allows for work to continue even in low light conditions like on long haul overnight flights. It features an array of low power usage hardware that gives it a maximum battery life of up to 10 hours on a single charge, but more realistic figures put it at between 6-8 hours which is still very impressive. Adding an external monitor or TV will require an adaptor as the SAMSUNG NP900X3L-K06US only includes mini VGA and Micro HDMI ports. Connecting external devices via USB is also limited as it only comes with two USB 3.0 ports. Due to its size Samsung has not added an optical drive, which brings the overall weight down, but it does mean using an external optical drive when needed. Most laptops of this size do not come with an Ethernet port, but Samsung has made sure to add a 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet port allowing users to plug in and conserve power by turning off their wireless services.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)

  • M.2 solid state drive (SSD)

Cons

  • Mini VGA and Micro HDMI
  • No optical drive
  • On board memory

Summary

The SAMSUNG NP900X3L-K06US is a surprisingly powerful 13.3-inch all-purpose laptop, but the two USB 3.0 ports, the mini VGA and Micro HDMI limit its connectivity.

Lenovo-G50-80-80E501U3US

Lenovo G50-80 80E501U3US 15.6-inch

Note: This laptop is priced above $500. The Lenovo G50-80 80E501U3US is a solid value laptop with strong hardware components for handling basic and mid-range applications. Its modest looking plastic case feels cheap compared to high-end laptops with aluminum housings, but the plastic material also keeps its weight down without leaving out an optical drive. Its 15-inch TFT screen with 1366 x 768 pixels offers sufficient brightness and accurate colors, but its viewing angles aren’t as good as on IPS panels. Thanks to a powerful Intel Core i5 processor and 6GB of RAM, it manages to breeze past day to day activities, and the onboard Intel HD 5500 graphics delivers playable frame rates even while running modern games at medium to low graphics settings. We’d expect a better runtime from a laptop powered by an ultra low voltage processor, but the G50-80 manages to pull off only 3 hours of battery life under normal use. Although some competitors offer more RAM and larger hard drives, for its sub $450 price tag the 80E501U3US is hard to beat in terms of raw value for money. Overall, the G50-80 80E501U3US makes reasonable trade-offs to provide budget buyers a powerful machine that is a step above most basic laptops at this price range.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 4.62 lbs

Pros

  • Fast Core i5 processor
  • Ample RAM
  • Great sound quality
  • Good integrated graphics

Cons

  • Below average battery life

Summary

With value for money like this its easy to see why the Lenovo G50-80 80E501U3US is the obvious choice for anyone wanting to run more demanding apps and most games. Obviously with raw power comes more of a drain on the battery so don't expect a long life when unplugged.

ASUS X550JX-DB71 15.6inch

ASUS X550JX-DB71 15.6inch

Value is often a huge part of purchasing a new gaming laptop and we believe the ASUS X550JX-DB71 offers a great compromise between price and performance. Critics have praised the performance while gaming on higher settings although the bottom of the machine does tend to heat up significantly. The battery life is also above average with a lifespan of around 5 hours with normal use, however this is significantly lowered when gaming. The Full-HD display is sharp and clear and the ASUS SonicMaster sound is fairly loud however lacking in the low end as is common with most laptops. Users were critical of the keyboard as they felt it should have been sturdier and backlit to better accommodate gaming, although the full size and numpad were welcomed. The X550JX-DB71 offers a well performing gaming laptop at an affordable price while not compromising on build quality.

Lenovo-Z70-80FG0037US-17-inch

Lenovo Z70-80FG0037US 17.3-inch

The Lenovo Z70 80FG0037US is a large screen multimedia laptop stocked with powerful hardware components to handle basically everything from browsing the web, editing MS-Word documents, listening to music and watching HD videos, video editing and gaming. The Full-HD screen resolution and extra screen space of its 17.3-inch display offer an excellent viewing experience while gaming and working. However, colors can get distorted if viewed from extreme angles. Although mostly plastic, its design is sleek and strongly built without any excessive creaking or flexing on the keyboard area. It has a full size AccuType keyboard with large keys but without any backlight. It is also quite thin and light for its size and also houses an optical drive. For audio, Lenovo has used JBL speakers, which sound decent but aren’t too different from any other high-quality laptop speakers. With an Intel Core i7-5500U 2.4 GHz Processor, 16 GB DDR3 RAM and 1TB of storage, the Z70’s hardware is aimed at power users who want smooth performance while working with multiple large applications at one. There is also an additional 8GB of SSD storage which is said to facilitate fast boot up. Its graphics is processed by an NVIDIA GeForce 840M with 2GB of dedicated Video RAM, which is a lower-mid range GPU capable of playing most modern games at medium settings. Despite a low voltage processor, the large size limits the Z70’s battery life to 4 hours, which is acceptable but far less than most ultraportables. All in all if you’re looking for a large laptop to replace your desktop, the Z70 80FG0037US should meet the requirements of most high performance users.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 8.2 lbs

Pros

  • Ample RAM
  • Fast Core i7 processor
  • Sleek stylish design
  • Full-HD screen
  • 1TB of storage

Cons

  • Poor battery life
  • Plastic chassis feels cheap
  • Not very portable

Summary

While lacking an aluminum chassis and backlit keyboard the Lenovo Z70-80FG0037US more than makes up for it with its large HD display as well as powerful Intel Core i7 CPU and ample Storage. A powerhouse that is only let down by its poor battery life.

Lenovo-Yoga-3-80JH0025US

Lenovo Yoga 3 14 2-in-1 80JH0025US

The Yoga 3 14 features the same thin and light design as other ultraportable notebooks, but it features two hinges that allows the display to bend back to 360 degrees. This mechanism quickly converts the laptop into a 14-inch Windows tablet. This same multi-mode design is used in the ASUS Flip and Toshiba Satellite Radius. It has a spacious keyboard with large keys, but there’s no dedicated numberpad. While the Yoga 3 14 isn’t as light or attractive looking as the Yoga 3 Pro, it shares similar dimensions measuring just 0.7 inch thick and weighing a manageable 3.5 pounds. Here, Lenovo has outfitted a 14-inch screen in a body of the same size as the 13.3-inch Yoga Pro, and has even packed more powerful hardware inside. Both the machines have the same number of ports that include a micro-HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port and a media card reader. Wireless connections include 802.11ac WLAN and Bluetooth 4.0. The Pro is powered by a Core M processor, which is only suitable for light tasks, but the Yoga 3 14 features a more powerful Core i5-5200U processor that not only delivers better performance all-round but also consumes less power to get you through a full day on a charge. Other hardware components include 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD storage. The 14-inch IPS screen with a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution offers sharp visuals for both text and graphics. The display is amply bright indoors but it gets very dim outdoors. If you want a brighter and better quality display, the Pro has a QHD+ 3200×1800 panel. All in all if battery life and performance are important to you, the Lenovo yoga 14 is a much better package than the Yoga Pro 13, and its almost $100 cheaper.

Specs

  • 14 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 8 hours battery life
  • 3.5 lbs

Pros

  • Slim profile
  • Aluminum build
  • Sharp display
  • Powerful processor
  • Long battery life

Cons

  • Poor sound quality

Summary

An all round well performer which is only let down by the poor sound quality.

Lenovo-Yoga-3-Pro-80HE000HUS

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 13.3-inch

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro overhauls the design of its predecessor to bring you one of the slimmest ultrabooks in the market with a half an inch thick body weighing just 2.6 pounds. While most convertible laptops feature big hinges, the Yoga 3’s 360 degree hinge is a thin band of metal, which allows smooth transition into tablet, tent and stand mode. The silver color chassis has a metal logo on the back of the lid and the keyboard and palm rest is covered with textured, rubbery surface to keep fingerprints away. The backlit keyboard has ergonomically designed u shaped keys with adequate save in between. The keyboard is disabled when you fold the screen to more than 190 degrees. The compact frame also packs a decent amount of ports with 2 USB 3.0, 1 DC in with USB 2.0, 4-in1- card reader and a micro HDMI output. Like the Yoga 2, it features a 13.3-inch IPS panel with 3,200 x 1,800 screen resolution. The viewing is excellent from any angle and coated with anti-glare finish it catches minimum reflections even in brightly lit rooms. For audio, it uses JBL speakers with MaxxAudio software for enhanced effects. Equipped with an Intel Core M 5Y70 Broadwell Processor backed by 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the hardware power of Yoga 3 Pro is sufficient for basic as well as some resource intensive tasks. It also has a 256GB SSD which offers fast read/write speed leading to decreased startup and application loading times. Its battery life is advertised as 9 hours. However, in moderate use it will last over 7 hours which is still shorter than many competitors. All in all, if you portability and build quality are your primary concerns, the Yoga 3 Pro is a highly recommended option.

Sporting a sleek and attractive brushed aluminum chassis with rounded edges, it is a classy looking laptop. The dual-hinge design allows the screen to be folded into various angles to enter five different modes including tablet mode where you flip the screen all the way to the back of the keyboard casing.
