Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS 15.6-inch

Finding a laptop with an Intel Skylake i5 processor for under $400 is quite rare, but the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS manages to squeeze in an i5 processor for its attractive processor. The textured plastic shell gives the laptop an elegant look and feel that we would usually expect from more expensive laptops. While many laptops under $400 only feature entry level AMD processors or cheaper Intel processors, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS is powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor. The processor is backed by 4GB of RAM which will be sufficient for basic tasks, but it does leave the laptop feeling a bit sluggish after prolonged use or when attempting more intense multitasking. The RAM can cheaply be upgraded to 8GB for a big boost in performance. To store all of your work or multimedia files, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS features a healthy 1TB of storage space. The hard drive can be upgraded to either a Hybrid drive or an SSD, for those who are after lightning fast boot and app loading speeds. While the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS is not at all a gaming laptop, you will be able to do some casual gaming thanks to the Intel HD Graphics 520 graphics processor. Like most budget friendly 15.6-inch laptops, it comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution display. But it still manages to offer vivid colors and sharp image quality for a budget display.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.29 lbs

Pros

  • Skylake i5 processor

Summary

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS offers great value for money with its large hard drive and its Skylake i5 processor. But the 4GB should be upgraded to prevent the laptop from feeling sluggish when multitasking.

ASUS VivoBook X540LA-SI30205P 15.6-inchASUS VivoBook X540LA-SI30205P 15.6-inch

The ASUS VivoBook X540LA-SI30205P is another one of ASUS’s budget laptops that offers good value for money. For under $400 you get a USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen 1) port, Bang & Olufsen designed audio and a comfortable keyboard for word processing and emailing. Powering the ASUS VivoBook X540LA-SI30205P is a 5th generation Intel Core i3-5020U processor and 4GB of DDR3L RAM, and while it is not the most powerful hardware it will allow you to complete basic tasks with ease. You can easily and cheaply upgrade the RAM to 8GB and this will allow you to run more memory intensive apps such as Photoshop. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample space for storing all of your work and multimedia files, but you do get a slower 5400rpm hard drive for the price. You can upgrade the hard drive to a faster 7200rpm hard drive or if you don’t mind the reduced storage space, then you can look at a superfast solid state drive. The display offers vivid colors and the image quality is good for its price, but the TN display doesn’t offer very good viewing angles. With a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768, the display doesn’t stand out from its competitors and is what we would expect from a laptop priced under $400. When it comes to battery life, the ASUS VivoBook X540LA-SI30205P is no winner either, you can expect between 4-5 hours off of a full charge under ideal conditions.

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM 15.6-inchAcer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM 15.6-inch

If you are looking for a budget friendly laptop that ticks all the boxes, then the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM is well worth a closer look. It not only features the latest Intel Kaby Lake processor, it also features next generation connectivity such as USB 3.1 Type-C and Bluetooth 4.1. Powered by a 7th generation Intel Core i3-7100U processor and 4GB of DDR4 RAM, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM will easily cope with basic tasks such as video streaming, web browsing and word processing. But the 4GB of RAM will struggle with more hardware intensive apps. Luckily, Acer has fitted the laptop with an access panel that makes upgrading the RAM a whole lot easier. If you are on a tight budget then we recommend installing a second 4GB RAM module, but if your budget is slightly larger, we recommend installing two 8GB RAM modules for a total of 16GB of RAM. While many sub $500 laptops are still being offered with entry level 1366 x 768 display panels, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM comes with a Full-HD display. The 1920 x 1080 display offers great image quality and with Acer’s ColorBlast technology, you get more than twice the as many colors as other budget laptops. If you spend long hours working on your laptop, then Acer’s BluelightShield feature will help to reduce eye strain by reducing the amount of blue light that is emitted from the display. Overall the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM is packed for of great features that you would expect from more expensive laptops, giving it a great price to performance ratio.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels

  • Slower 5400rpm HDD

Summary

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM offers a lot of great hardware for its sub $400 price tag. But you only get 4GB of RAM and we recommend upgrading to increase the laptop’s day-to-day performance.

ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 14-inchASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 14-inch

While most budget laptops offer very similar hardware specs, the ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 features hardware specs that are found on higher-end laptops. The sleek design features a brushed aluminum lid and a imitation metal keyboard deck which gives the ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 a high-end look and feel. The Intel Quad-Core Pentium N3700 processor and 4GB of RAM will not win any awards, but will cope with day-to-day tasks such as web browsing, Skype and word processing. While the eMMC solid state drive offers fast Windows boot and app loading times, the 128GB of storage space is limited and users who want to store media will have to look at external and cloud storage options. The Full-HD display offers a maximum resolution of 1920×1080, but the maximum brightness level is lower than many of its competitors and its coverage of the sRGB spectrum is lower than many other Full-HD displays. The Intel HD Graphics are sufficient for running apps such as Netflix and VLC, but it is by no means a gaming chip and will only be able to process older and classic gaming titles. The thin and light design is backed up by a long battery life of over 9 hours off of a single charge, making the ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 a great budget laptop for users on the go.

With the Aspire E5-575-54E8, Acer has once again created a budget friendly laptop with great hardware and next generation ports. The metallic visual effect gives the Acer Aspire E5-575-54E8 a sleek design that is also extremely beautiful. Powered by a powerful Skylake Intel Core i5-6200U and 6GB of DDR4 RAM, the Acer Aspire E5-575-54E8 will cope with day-to-day tasks with ease. The Acer CineCrystal technology offers brilliant colors and crisp image quality, but the maximum brightness levels are lower than average. To ensure that users have ample storage space for their work and multimedia files, Acer has fitted the Acer Aspire E5-575-54E8 with a 1TB mechanical hard drive. The USB 3.1 Type-C offers users the ability to use next generation external devices and gives the Acer Aspire E5-575-54E8 an edge over many of its competitors. While it is not designed to be a gaming laptop, the Acer Aspire E5-575-54E8 can be used for casual gaming thanks to its Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU chip.

More Laptops Under $400

Dell Inspiron i3552-8040BLK 15.6-Inch

Dell has quite a range of cheaper laptops especially in the Inspiron series to suite most budgets. The Inspiron i3552-8040BLK comes in at just under $400 and for the price you get a quick Quad Core Intel Pentium N3700 running at 1.6GHz and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, although this isn’t upgradable. Dell has also included an SSD instead of a traditional hard disk drive which delivers very fast bootup and load times. The tradeoff, unfortunately, is that the drive is only 128GB so the user is left with minimal storage. Windows 10 is pre-installed and runs fairly well with this hardware spec. The screen is clear and bright and the battery life is good. Users did complain that the machine did feel a bit plasticky however still sturdy. The Intel HD Graphics are based on the Braswell architecture and don’t offer much in the way of gaming especially for newer games however some older games will run at acceptable framerates on lower graphical settings. All in all this is a great laptop for the user on a tight budget and only needs to perform basic tasks.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 6 hours battery life
  • 4.8 lbs

Pros

  • Clear display
  • SSD performance
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Maximum RAM is 4GB
  • Minimal storage space
  • No Ethernet

Summary

An affordable budget laptop that offers fast boot up and load times thanks to the SSD. You may want to purchase and external hard drive, however for additional storage.

Dell-Inspiron-11-i3147-10000SLV (2)

Dell Inspiron 11 i3147-10000SLV 11.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron i3147-10000SLV is a versatile device offering the convenience of a tablet and laptop in a single package. Its silver colored chassis looks very classy and thanks to sturdy hinges it feels much more solid than a standard budget netbook. It is only 0.8-inch thick and weighs only 3 pounds but still feels bulky in tablet mode when the 11-inch screen is flipped over the keyboard. Despite its small body, the keys are well-spaced and big, so that the typing is as accurate and comfortable as a desktop keyboard. It is powered by a Quad-Core Intel Pentium N3540 processor, which is better than most Intel Atom processors in both performance and battery life. While it is not a machine for serious media editing or gaming, low-resolution image editing, streaming movies, web surfing and casual gaming are possible. The system runs well on the default 4GB of RAM and 500GB, but if you want an extra boost you can upgrade to 8GB of RAM and an SSD. The 6 hours of Battery life is excellent, beating out many similar convertible laptops. By removing the bottom panel, users can easily expand the device’s memory and hard drive. It comes with Windows 10 preinstalled so you don’t have to spend time upgrading like with other laptops that come with the older the Windows 8 operating system. The i3147-3750SLV is not designed for gamers or power users, but if your needs are only basic, it is a reasonably priced ultraportable hybrid packed with essential features and the latest Windows operating system.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 3.07 lbs

Pros

  • Convertible design
  • Easy to upgrade
  • Bright and sharp display
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • No SSD
  • Build quality of the keyboard

Summary

A portable hybrid device with a great display and long battery life. The storage and RAM are easily upgradable, however we do recommend adding a SSD for improved performance.

Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 17.3-inchToshiba Satellite C75-C7130 17.3-inch

While most laptops in the sub $400 range are usually 15.6-inch and smaller, the Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 is a 17.3-inch all-purpose laptop for users who believe bigger is better. The brushed black design gives the Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 a sleek and high-end look and feel. While many 17.3-inch laptops are bulky and heavy, the Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 weighs just 5.7 pounds and measures just over an inch thick. Sporting a 5th generation Intel Core i3-5005U processor and 6GB of RAM, the Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 will cope with basic tasks with ease. For more intensive hardware apps, we recommend upgrading to 8GB or the maximum of 16GB of RAM. While you would expect a dedicated graphics card in a 17.3-inch laptop, but to bring down the cost of the laptop, Toshiba have gone with the HD Graphics 5500 graphics chip. This is in no way a gaming graphics chip, but it will run games such as DOTA and Leagues of Legends on medium to high graphics. Ample storage space is provided by a 750GB 5400rpm mechanical hard drive, but users who are after faster boot and app loading times can look at upgrading to a solid state drive. The biggest draw card is the 17.3-inch display, which offers great viewing angles and vivid colors. With a maximum resolution of 1600 X 900 it offers good image quality and allows for a better HD multimedia experience.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1600 x 900 pixels (TN)
  • 4.5 hours battery life
  • 7.71 lbs

Pros

  • 17.3-inch display
  • Sleek design
  • Good audio
  • Price

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Not as portable
  • Only one USB 3.0 port

Summary

The Toshiba Satellite C75-C7130 offers a big 17.3-inch display for multimedia purposes and a large keyboard deck for comfortable word processing. But the average battery life will mean carrying a power cord around most of the time.

Lenovo ThinkPad 11E 11.6-inchLenovo ThinkPad 11E 11.6-inch

Lenovo is known for their almost bulletproof business laptops and their range of affordable entry level laptops. The ThinkPad 11E is an all-black plastic laptop that offers great durability and great value for money. Powered by an Intel Quad Core Celeron N2940 processor and 4GB of RAM, the ThinkPad 11E offers enough power for everyday tasks. While it will not win any awards and was not designed to be the most powerful laptop on the market, it will run apps such as Photoshop with a tiny bit of lag. But users who are looking for a laptop for multimedia work will have to look at spending a bit more for a smooth experience. While it does come preinstalled with Windows 10, users can install Linux on it and certain builds such as the Tumbleweed build will install without any tweaking or proprietary drivers. While many laptops in the same price range feature smaller eMMC storage devices or 5400rpm mechanical hard drives, the 11E is equipped with a 128GB solid state drive. While it does offer lightning fast boot and app loading times, it is a bit limited on storage space. Users who require more storage space will have to consider replacing the 2.5-inch drive with larger drive or make use of external or cloud based storage options. The volume rocker and power button are weirdly located on the side of the laptop and will take a bit of getting used to.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

Pros

  • Easy Linux installation

Cons

HP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition 15.6-inchHP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition 15.6-inch

The Signature Edition series of laptops from Microsoft are seemingly unique as they are free of any 3rd-party trialware and bloatware apps. This is a niche offering and perfect for users who would otherwise remove the preinstalled bloatware from their system. The design of the HP 15-ay091ms is similar to most of HP’s budget range and the sturdy plastic shells will be durable enough to withstand being carried around daily for school or college students. The 6th generation Intel Core i3-6100U processor and 8GB of RAM will easily handle everyday tasks and will even be able to run more intensive apps if needed. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample space for storing multimedia and work files. The keyboard is well laid out and makes word processing quite easy and effortless. The Display is a standard 1366 x 768 display panel which is exactly what we expect to find on budget laptops. But this doesn’t stop it from delivering vibrant details and good colors. The display also offers 10-finger multitouch, meaning users will be able to effortlessly navigate around Windows 10. While the colors are good, the viewing angles are very average and this is due to the TN panel that has been used. While one of its predecessors the HP 15-r018dx lacked Bluetooth connectivity, HP has given the HP 15-ay091ms Bluetooth 4.0 for users who want to use their Bluetooth peripherals and save their USB ports. Overall the HP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition is a clean cut budget laptop that has HP’s legendary reliability and a clean version of Windows 10.

Cons

If you’re not an advanced user, your laptop usage will be limited to basic tasks like web browsing, watching videos and running everyday software.  The Acer Aspire E1-532-2616 with its Intel Celeron 2957U processor and 4GB of RAM is another contender capable of taking care of your daily tasks with ease and has received universal praise as a top budget notebook. As with most laptops in this category, its Intel HD Graphics won’t let you run any modern games or graphics designing applications, but low requirement games might be playable. It has a nice full keyboard with well-spaced keys, allowing you to type your long reports with high accuracy. It has a 15.6-inch screen with good viewing angles and fairly accurate colors for an enjoyable viewing experience. Budget users could care less about the design and looks, but they’ll be glad to know that the E1-532-2616, with its sleek surface and thin profile, isn’t the cheapest looking laptop here despite its low price. It includes all the necessary ports and connectivity options as well as a DVD-writer to backup your files. Great bang for buck with a clear screen, good performance and no bloatware. The only gripe users had was its low sound volume.

Toshiba-Satellite -L75-B7270

Toshiba Satellite L75-B7270 17.3-inch

The 17-inch Toshiba Satellite L75-B7270 offers users all the screen real estate they need for widescreen movies, Internet browsing, and spreadsheet navigation. Its thick and glossy design may not suit everyone’s taste, but at barely 6 pounds it is the lightest big screen laptop on this list. However, because of its large size it draws more power leaving it with a rather short 3.8 hours of battery life. It comes with an Intel Pentium Processor 3558U processor, 4GB of RAM upgradable to 16GB, and 500GB hard drive. Thus, it is a laptop suitable for regular users and is not intended for hardcore gamers or high-tech professionals. Standard features include a full-sized keyboard, a USB 3.0 port, a memory card reader, an HDMI port, Bluetooth, a DVD drive and DTS sound. The L75-B7270 is a great choice if you’re looking for a inexpensive desktop replacement with a large screen laptop, but if you need longer battery life check out the Dell Inspiron i5748-1143sLV which has the exact internal specs and a more modern design, albeit at a slightly higher price.

Specs

  • 17.3 inch, 1600 x 900 pixels (TN)

  • 5.91 lbs

Pros

  • Large 17 inch Screen
  • Polished design
  • Easily upgradable RAM
  • Fullsize Keyboard

Cons

  • Poor Processor
  • Poor battery life

Summary

A large screen laptop better suited to watching media than intensive performance thanks to underpowered CPU.

Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition 15.6-inchLenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition 15.6-inch

Lenovo is no stranger when it comes to offering great laptops for the budget market. One of their latest offerings is the new Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition laptop, which offers decent specs and a very attractive price. Its plastic shell looks very unassuming, but it is quite sturdy and will take a bit of a beating without breaking. Sporting AMD’s more powerful FX-7500 processor and a healthy 8GB of RAM, the Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition will cope with day-to-day tasks with ease. Featuring a more powerful Radeon R7 GPU, the Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition can be used for casual gaming and for video editing. But we do recommend upgrading to 16GB to improve performance while using video and photo editing apps. For those users who need quite a bit off storage space, the Z50-75 offers a sizable 1TB mechanical hard drive for all your multimedia files. Though it is a 5400rpm drive, users can look at upgrading to a Hybrid or solid state drive for increased performance. But a 1TB SSD will set you back quite a few dollars. The display is rather average and this is one area where Lenovo has cut costs. But despite its maximum resolution of 1366 x 768, users can comfortably enjoy 720p videos. While many other laptops offer decent battery life these days, the Z50-75 barely manages to squeeze out 5 hours under ideal conditions. With its average battery life, the Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition is more suited as being a desktop replacement at home or at work.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.15 lbs

Pros

  • Quad Core FX processor
  • 1TB of storage space
  • 8GB of RAM
  • Price

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Display quality
  • Only one USB 3.0 port

Summary

The Lenovo Z50-75 Signature Edition is one of the latest budget offering from Lenovo, offering decent hardware it will do great as a home or office laptop. But the poor battery life limits its portability.

ASUS-D550CA-RS31-425x410ASUS D550CA-RS31 15.6-Inch

The ASUS D550CA-RS31 features an elegant design with a textured finish for a comfortable grip with superb scratch prevention. Weighing just 4.7 pounds, it is more lightweight than many other 15-inch budget priced models and hasn’t excluded the DVD burner to shed its weight. The Intel Core i3 processor is a nice upgrade from the slower Celeron and Pentium N series normally found on cheaper devices. The overall performance is just below the former Intel Core i5-2467M and the 6GB of memory is the highest amount of RAM offered in this price range. The C55-A5281 is the only other laptop with same amount of RAM, but it has a slower processor and a much higher price. This configuration allows you to breeze through general tasks as well as some slightly demanding applications like Photoshop. However, the integrated Intel HD 4000 won’t allow you play the latest games on anything less than the absolute lowest settings. While all the usual connectivity features are included, there are only two USB ports onboard which may be a limitation for some users. The D550CA-RS3 is a great laptop that makes minimum sacrifices on the essential features, doesn’t cost as much as other portable alternatives and delivers a smooth experience for the average Windows user.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1

  • 4.7 lbs

Pros

  • Generous amount of RAM
  • Bright, Clear Screen
  • Responsive touchpad with gesture support

Cons

  • Cheep feeling keys
  • Limited viewing angle
  • Only 2 USB ports

Summary

A great entry level machine with no shortage of RAM. and a clear and crisp screen that is only let down by narrow viewing angles. A few more USB ports would have been nice.

HP 15-F211WM 15.6-inch

A very basic machine at its heart the HP 15-F211WM delivers good day to day performance at a reasonable price. Powered by a Celeron N2840 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, advanced applications such as music production or media editing are out of the question, as is gaming. With 500GB of storage space and a respectable display this machine is good for 720p media. The good sound quality and capable volume level contributes to the multimedia experience. The keyboard and trackpad are where this machine shows its price point. The keyboard is unresponsive at times and the trackpad fails to register input periodically. This machine is best suited to college or business users who need basic browsing and word processing with some media consumption on the side.

Dell Inspiron I3558-9136BLK 15.6-inchDell Inspiron I3558-9136BLK 15.6-inch

When it comes to entry level laptops, most budget buyers will prefer performance over aesthetics. The Dell Inspiron I3558-9136BLK features updated hardware and Dell has addressed some of the issues from its predecessor. With a 5th generation Intel Core i3 processor and 6GB of RAM, the Dell Inspiron I3558-9136BLK will cope with everyday tasks and can even run Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW. The 1TB mechanical drive offers plenty of storage space, and the slower 5400rpm speeds won’t affect most day-to-day tasks. The Intel HD 5500 graphics will run older and classic games with acceptable frame rates, but newer titles will struggle even at the lowest of settings. Its 15.6-inch touchscreen display offers a maximum resolution of 1366×768, but colors and image quality are average for its price point. The touchscreen is quite responsive and allows users to quickly and easily navigate around Windows 10. Users have criticised the all plastic chassis and covers, but this helps to keep the weight and the costs down, which is import in the budget laptop segment. Overall, potential buyers will be impressed with the Dell Inspiron I3558-9136BLK value for money performance, despite its no frills design.

ASUS Transformer Book T100TAF-C1-GR 10.1-inch

Sometimes you just need a laptop is a true jack of all trades.  One that is fast and light and easy to pack especially when you travel.  The ASUS Transformer Book T100TAF-C1-GR is the answer you have been waiting for.  While it simply doesn’t have the power to be a full desktop replacement, it offers a fast enough processor and RAM to get the job done.  This convertible tablet is lightweight and will easily pack in your briefcase if you have to travel for work.  Office style apps will run flawlessly and movies play smooth on the device.  However, you have 64 GB of storage to work with which can be rather limiting.  This tablet does come with free storage from OneDrive Cloud for a year and even a one year subscription to MS Office 365 so you will easily be able to work as soon as you take it out the box.  Be careful of the battery life, however, some users have found that despite the claims of ASUS it simply cannot hold up under heavy use.  Overall, the ASUS Transformer BookT100TAF-C1-GRis a great addition to any travelers briefcase.

Lenovo G50 80L000ALUS 15.6-inchLenovo G50 80L000ALUS 15.6-inch

The Lenovo G50-80L000ALUS delivers surprisingly good performance for a budget laptop. It features an attractive all-black casing made of plastic, which feels cheaper than its pricier aluminum-clad counterparts. However, the Lenovo build quality is comparatively better than many competitors at this price range, and it is strong enough to survive your daily commute to school or work. Its 15.6-inch screen supports a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 making it more than sufficient for daily computing and watching movies, reading ebooks and browsing the web. Its core hardware components include Intel Core i3-4030U processor, 4GB of RAM and a large 1TB HDD. Many laptops at this price are equipped with much slower Dual Core Intel Celeron processors or Intel Atom processors, so the Intel Core i3 should show a big jump in benchmarks while running everyday as well as multimedia tasks. Budget laptops are generally not expected to run graphic intensive tasks but with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400, users will be able to enjoy some old or less demanding games. Despite its relatively large screen size and power hungry internals, it has a respectable 5 hours of battery life. For a sub $400 laptop, the G50-80L000ALUS offers a good combination of price, performance and features.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 3 hours battery life
  • 4.63 lbs

Pros

  • Plenty of storage space
  • Great Value

Cons

  • Lots of bloatware
  • Cheap plastic finish
  • Windows 8.1

Summary

The Lenovo G50-80L000ALUS provides great value for money with 1TB of storage. Unfortunately, with the low price comes a cheap finish and lots of Lenono bloatware.

Dell-Inspiron-i3541-2001BLK

Dell Inspiron i3541-2001BLK 15.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron i3541-2001BLK doesn’t have the bells and whistles of a Macbook or even a Zenbook but, like other budget Dell units, it is a reliable machine that is solidly built to satisfy the needs of the average user. It has a black plastic casing with a subtle textured finish for a more distinctive look. The design is not luxurious but it’s thin and very lightweight for a cheap 15-inch laptop. The full keyboard has nice feedback and the touchpad seems very responsive. The number of included USB ports should be sufficient for most users who want to connect multiple peripherals. The 1366 x 768 pixel display is the same kind you’ll find on most budget machines, and it offers enough clarity for basic viewing. If you’re a Photoshop expert or a graphic designer, you should consider paying premium for a laptop with a Full-HD IPS panel that offers better sharpness and more accurate color reproduction. Configured with an AMD A6-6310 Quad-Core combined with 4GB of RAM and with a 500GB HDD for storage, the i3541 is sufficient for basic purposes including video playback, web browsing and word processing. Light gaming is also possible thanks to the integrated Radeon R4 Graphics although only older games will run smoothly. Not having any preinstalled bloatware also gives it a slight performance boost out the box over many competing laptops. The 5 hours battery life is not exceptional but it’s far from disappointing. All in all, the i3541-2001BLK offers good value for the money by delivering reliable day-to-day performance and a smooth Windows 8 experience on a budget.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

  • 6.5 hours battery life

Pros

  • Fast AMD processor
  • Crisp and bright display
  • Good battery life
  • Affordable price

Cons

Toshiba-Satellite-C55D-B5102-15.6

Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5102 15.6-inch

The Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5102 features an old school design with a black polycarbonate casing with a non-removable back panel. The sealed back panel makes it very difficult to replace the battery or to upgrade internal components thought it makes for a sturdier build. The textured surface on the back looks and feels nice to the touch but it doesn’t hide the fact that it’s a budget laptop. For a 15.6-inch laptop it packs relatively thin profile and manageable weight of only 4.6 pounds, much lighter than many competitors. It has a traditional keyboard with scissor-switch keys that can be popped off. The keys are not as high quality as those on modern chiclet-style keyboard but are full size and comfortable to type on. The 15.6 screen has a 1366 x 768 resolution which is standard in this price range. Text and images look clear without any unwanted pixilation or color distortions. In the connectivity department it features two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, a gigabit Ethernet port and a VGA port. The C55D-B5102 is equipped with an AMD A8-6410 quad-core processor with integrated AMD Radeon R5 graphics which perform well on everyday tasks as well as multimedia benchmarks. The R5 Graphics will let you play old games fluently and some new at lower settings, which is not something you’d usually expect from a sub-$300 laptop. To seal the deal it for performance conscious users has 4GB of RAM and a generous 1TB hard drive, the highest specs you’ll get in this price bracket.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 4.9 lbs

Pros

  • AMD Radeon R5 graphics
  • Fast Quad-Core Processor
  • Plentiful storage space
  • Numeric Keypad
  • 1TB Hard Drive

Cons

  • Poor sound quality
  • Difficult to upgrade
  • No tactile feedback on keyboard

Summary

A great machine for basic gaming, the AMD Radeon R5 graphics put this a step above machines with Intel based graphics. The Quad-Core processor performs well and the 1TB hard drive means plenty of storage., although Toshiba falls short with its tinny speakers and cheap feeling keyboard.

HP Pavilion 15ac151dx 15.6-inchHP Pavilion 15ac151dx 15.6-inch

Users who are after a reliable laptop that can run a host of everyday apps will find comfort in one of HP’s latest offerings. The world renowned laptop manufacturer is known for its rugged business machines and for their range of affordable solutions for the home and the office. The HP Pavilion 15ac151dx is a budget friendly laptop which features decent hardware for its sub $400 price tag. Sporting an ultra low voltage 5th generation Intel i5-5200U processor and 4GB of RAM, the HP Pavilion 15ac151dx will deal with most day-to-day tasks with ease. But we do recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 8GB to boost performance and to allow resource hungry applications such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to run smoothly. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for media and for college or work documents and assignments. The slower 5400rpm drive speed is perfectly suited for the tasks that the HP Pavilion 15ac151dx was designed for, but users who are after faster Windows boot and app loading times can easily replace the HDD with an SSD. While it is not designed to be a gaming laptop, the Intel HD Graphics 5500 will run older games and is suited for casual gaming. But the budget price does have some drawbacks, there is no Bluetooth connectivity, the display is only suited for 720p videos, the maximum brightness is not very high and the battery life is very average.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

Cons

  • No Bluetooth
  • Average battery
  • Low brightness levels

Summary

The HP Pavilion 15ac151dx offers a powerful ultra low voltage Intel i5 processor and a large hard drive, but the display is average and the battery life won’t win any awards.

Despite it’s strong value for money, users looking to run more advanced options will still want to review our guides in higher price brackets as despite offering the best feature set in its class, the C55-B5100, as with all laptops at its price, is not without its limitations in terms of raw hardware performance. HP 15-f215dx 15.6-inch

The HP 15-f215dx features a straightforward design which hides a lot power under the hood. It has smooth plastic body that is light and comfortable to carry. While most competitors are equipped with underpowered Intel Celeron and entry-level AMD processors, this 15-inch laptop features a powerful AMD A8-6410 quad-core chip which is designed for mid-range performance. Backed by 4 GB of RAM, the A8 processor can easily tackle daily web, office and multimedia tasks, and the integrated AMD Radeon R5 graphics will let you play modern games at medium to low settings. Its 750GB hard drive is the biggest you will see at this price range, but its speed is quite slow at 5400 rpm. However, features like faster Hard Drives, premium build and high-res screen are expected only on higher-end systems. There is no doubt that it one of the top performers here, but its power comes at the cost of battery life which averages just around 4.5 hours. Other features include the usual USB ports, an HDMI port, card reader and a DVD burner. Overall, the 15-f215dx is one of the fastest notebooks at this price, and it has better price to feature/performance ratio than most competitors.

Acer-Aspire-R-11-R3-131T-P344

Acer Aspire R 11 R3-131T-P344 11.6-inch

Chromebooks are a big hit among students and budget shoppers mainly because they’re compact, cheap and come with a battery that lasts all day. The Aspire R11 shares all of these Chromebook-like qualities but instead of Chrome it runs the Windows 10 operating system. It is a bit expensive compared to regular Chromebooks but offers a lot more in terms of usability and performance. It has a responsive 10-point multi-touch display and a unique 360 dual-torque hinge that allows you to effortlessly switch between four different viewing modes – Notebook, Display, Tent and Pad. Windows 10 automatically detects the mode and adjusts the screen layout accordingly. The casing of the laptop feels sophisticated but it’s made mostly of plastic. Its lid and base have a textured finish with rounded corners. While most of its competitors are colored plain black, it comes in an eye-catching blue. The black chiclet keyboard has proper size keys providing a nice tactile feedback. A small downside of the keyboard is that it doesn’t retract in tablet mode like some of the competing 2-in-1 laptops. The R11 has a TN screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. Unsurprisingly, the display has narrow viewing angles and a glossy finish which limits using this laptop outdoors or under direct light sources. The Aspire R11 is configured with basic hardware specs including an Intel Pentium N3700 Quad-Core processor combined with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. It has enough power for basic tasks like Internet browsing and office applications but it won’t be sufficient for modern day gaming.

Toshiba-Satellite-C55-B5240X

Toshiba C55-B5240x 15.6-inch

Another great entry in the under $300 category, the Toshiba C55-B5240x offers great day to day performance on normal tasks such as document editing, web surfing, and more. The included Intel Celeron N2840 Dual-Core processor is fast enough to handle these types of tasks but struggles in more complex computing tasks such as video editing and gaming. The 4GB of RAM allows multitasking between several light apps, but if you are a heavy user adding more memory will result in a much smoother experience Since it has a low-grade integrated graphics, heavy gaming is not an activity you’ll do on this machine. For storage, you get a 500GB HDD. Despite including a Supermulti DVD burner, the laptop is relatively lightweight making it easy to transport, although this is also due to its plastic casing. While sturdy, the chassis feels cheap and doesn’t do a good job of resisting fingerprints or smudges. It has enough USB ports, video outputs and wireless connectivity options to let you connect to a variety of peripherals including external speakers, Bluetooth keyboards and HDTVs. While many laptops still ship with Windows 8, this unit has Windows 10 preinstalled so you won’t have to spent time doing the upgrade. The Toshiba Satellite C55-B5240x is the perfect laptop for light users or kids and will handle any day to day activities with ease. If that is the only reason you need your laptop, then this is just right for you and it is at a price that almost anyone can afford.

Dell Inspiron i3542-1666BK 15-inch

If you are shopping for a laptop on a seriously tight budget, then the Dell Inspiron i3542-1666 BK is the laptop to get.  As one of the cheapest options in this list, it includes a Pentium 3558U Dual-Core CPU, 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. At first glance, these specs may seem meager but in actuality it is on par with other, more expensive Dual-Core laptops in this list. Where this laptop truly shines is its battery life.  With a battery life of over 6 hours, this is the perfect laptop for travelers or users who don’t enjoy being attached to wires throughout the day.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)

A good machine for the user on a budget, performs well for day to day tasks but wouldn't recommend for more demanding applications.

HP Pavilion 15-R018DX

HP 15-R018DX 15.6-inch

The HP 15-R018DX is a competitively priced laptop with a speedy fourth generation Intel Core i3 processor, Intel HD 4400 graphics and a generous amount of storage. The lack of dedicated graphics means it is by no means a serious gaming or video editing machine but the integrated graphics does allow for low-level gaming and even modern games such as Modern Warfare 3 should run smoothly on medium settings. It will, of course, breeze through common office or multimedia applications. The battery won’t last long while playing games but it is acceptable under light use.  Overall, the 15-R018DX  has a solid set of features making it a another great choice for hobbyist gamers on a tight budget.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 4.92 lbs

Pros

  • Large screen
  • Ample storage
  • High quality webcam

Cons

  • No Bluetooth
  • Short battery life

Summary

A good all round machine of which its major selling point is the affordable price. Bluetooth and a longer battery life would have been appreciated.

Dell Inspiron I3542-11001BK 15.6

Dell Inspiron I3542-11001BK 15.6-inch

When it comes to laptops, most budget buyers will prefer performance over aesthetics. The Dell Inspiron I3542-11001BK provides sufficient power for everyday tasks and some more moderate level apps. It has a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 plus a touchscreen which adds extra functionality for Windows 8 navigation, a standard configuration for full sized laptops in this price bracket. Its simple design is constructed entirely out of plastic which helps to keep its weight and cost low. Packing an Intel Core i3-4030 processor and 4 GB memory, it won’t have any problem tackling simple programs but if you want to run bigger applications it is recommended you upgrade the memory to 8 GB. The 750 GB storage can store lots of documents and videos but the transfer rates will be slower than the new 7200 rpm Hard Drives. If storage is your main concern, the i3542-3267bk comes with a bigger hard drive for the same price, but it doesn’t have a touchscreen. The i3542-11001BK has enough USB ports for you to connect multiple peripherals like an external HDD or a Bluetooth mouse and also includes a multiformat DVD burner with double-layer support which lets you record up to 8.5 GB of data in a dual layer DVD. Overall, potential buyers will be impressed with this bestseller’s value for money performance despite its no frills design.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 4 hours battery life

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Good performance
  • Sharp touchscreen

Cons

  • Poor sound quality
  • Build quality
  • Webcam quality

Summary

A good entry level machine with good hardware and a responsive touchscreen. Unfortunately the sound quality and webcam leave much to be desired.

Chromebooks Under $400

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S 15.6-inchAcer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S 15.6-inch

The 15-inch format is quite uncommon with Chromebooks as most of them feature displays that are 14-inches and under. But the Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S boasts a 15.6-inch display which makes working on everyday tasks that much easier. The Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S offers many of the same features as its more expensive big brother the Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-362Q. But noticeably the processors are different and while the more expensive version features an Intel Core i3, the Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S only comes equipped with an Intel Celeron 3205U processor. While the Celeron will do just fine for basic tasks such as web browsing, word processing and multimedia entertainment, it is slightly underpowered for some of the more hardware intensive apps. With a 32GB SSD, the Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S has double the internal memory of most of its cheaper rivals. But it’s still a major limitation if you intend to use your Chromebook offline and don’t have a permanent connection to the 100GB of Cloud storage that is offered by Google. Another downside is that the Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S does not come with a microSD slot for a permanent storage expansion like some of its cheaper competitors. The In-panel switching display offers crisp and vivid image quality and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080, making it great for watching your favourite series or movies.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (IPS)
  • Chrome OS
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 4.85 lbs

Pros

  • IPS Full-HD display
  • Excellent battery life
  • 4GB of RAM
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • Limited storage space
  • Celeron CPU
  • White casing is prone to dirt
  • Slightly less travel friendly

Summary

The Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C09S is a great Chromebook for users who require a laptop for basic tasks. The Full-HD display and the larger display size make this Chromebook great for multimedia entertainment.

Acer C910-C37P 15.6-inch Chromebook

Acer Chromebook C910-C37P 15.6-inch

People usually associate Chromebooks with small-screen productivity-oriented laptops for schools or offices. The C910-C37P, on the other hand, offers larger screen real estate with a 15.6-inch Full-HD IPS screen. If you’re coming from a garden variety TN panels, you will see a big improvement in color accuracy, contrast and viewing angles. Despite its large proportions, at just 4.8 pounds, it’s not as heavy as similar sized Windows laptops, and its battery lasts a lengthy 9 hours – similar to many smaller chromebooks and Windows ultrabooks. As for its design, Acer has reinforced its textured cover to endure accidental force and drops, and the hinges are robustly fixed without feeling too tight. It has a typical Chromebook style chiclet keyboard that leaves out dedicated number pad and Windows buttons like delete, print screen and caps lock. Keys are well spaced so that the typing accuracy won’t be any different from a regular keyboard. Its internal hardware includes the new Intel Celeron 3205U Processor, 4GB Ram and a 32GB SSD. You get a more powerful system than ARM-based Chromebooks like the Samsung Chromebook 2 and Intel Celeron equipped Toshiba CB35. However, the CB35 has a better quality screen. Overall, audiophiles, movie lovers and productivity users will love the bigger, affordable and more capable C910-C37P Chromebook.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 4.85 lbs

Pros

  • 1920x1080 IPS Display
  • Great battery life
  • Blazing fast solid state drive

Cons

  • Bulky design
  • low storage space
  • Poor integrated graphics

Summary

The full HD screen is crisp and bright, near instant boot and restart times thanks to the SSD. 15.6 inch screen is rather large for a Chromebook and effects portability.

Acer C720-3404 Chromebook

Acer Chromebook C720-3404 15.6-inch

As Chrome OS is expanding in the market, the Chromebooks are slowly stepping into mainstream offline computing rather than running exclusively online. The Acer C720-3404 is an updated Chromebook model with significantly more computing power than its predecessors. It has an Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM which are huge upgrades considering many previous as well as existing models feature far slower and less efficient Intel Atom and Celeron CPUs. Coming from an older generation of Chromebooks, users will experience a faster and more responsive performance in multitasking and a longer battery life. With these upgrades, Acer has upped the price of the C720-3404 quite significantly, making it as expensive as many entry-level Windows 8 laptops. However, the Windows laptops in this price range do not offer the same battery life and portability.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 9 hours battery life
  • 2.76 lbs

Pros

  • Clear and sharp display
  • Fast boot times due to SSD
  • Fast i3 processor

Cons

  • Aggressive screen dimming

Summary

With a sleek design, clear display and a huge performance boost thanks to an SSD, the Acer C720-3404 is a fantastic Chromebook although the screen brightness can be sub-par in bright lighting conditions.

Acer Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T1UU

Acer Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T677 13.3-inch

The Acer Chromebook 13 is Acer’s new and improved Chromebook that is both inside and out more sophisticated than virtually all competing Chromebook models. The upscale design consists of a slim, angular body that is just 0.17-inches thick and it even includes a full-sized keyboard and large touchpad. It has a Full-HD, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display not present in any large screen Chromebooks including the 13-inch Toshiba Chromebook and HP Chromebook 14. The biggest step up is the new NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor which lets the Chromebook 13 ditch its fan and maintain a slim profile, while delivering performance comparable to or better than the Intel powered Chromebooks. The new processor also helped it achieve a best in class 11 hours of battery life. However, on multitasking the C720-3404 with its Intel Core i3 processor proved stronger than the Tegra K1. It has 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, the highest configuration available on Chromebooks. If you are ready to embrace the Chrome platform in all its glory, the Acer Chromebook 13 makes a strong statement with its superior hardware, minimalistic design and a price tag of $379.  For the same price, you can get the more portable 11-inch Acer C720-3404, which is faster but with a lower battery life and doesn’t include a Full-HD screen.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)
  • Chrome OS
  • 11 hours battery life
  • 3.31 lbs

Pros

  • High resolution Screen
  • Long battery life
  • Near silent operation

Cons

  • Poor sound quality at higher volume
  • sluggish CPU

Summary

A fast, portable Chromebook with a crystal clear screen and long battery life. The sound however, tends to crackle at higher volumes and the CPU is fairly underpowered.

Top Netbooks Under $400

For those of you that prefer to netbooks, the following is the list of the best Netbooks available for below $400.  These netbooks all have 11-inch screens and are highly portable making them perfect for students or professionals on the move.

ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA 11.6-inchASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA 11.6-inch

The budget laptop market is a highly competitive market with all of the big name brands throwing contenders into the ring. ASUS has a very successful range of budget friendly laptops that offer good hardware to price ratios. The ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA is a fairly inexpensive convertible laptop that has been designed to be sturdy and reliable for those users who are after a compact, go-anywhere laptop. The brushed aluminum lid gives the ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA a high-end look and feel, but the Celeron processor lets it down on the performance side of things. While the Intel Dual Core Celeron N3050 will run basic tasks such as MS Word, Skype and web browsing, it is slightly underpowered and users will notice a bit of lag while multi-tasking. Four gigabytes of RAM back the processor and is enough for the basic tasks that the Celeron processor was designed for. The eMMC flash memory offers faster Windows boot and app loading times, but with only 64GB of internal storage it is a bit on the small side and is what we expect from budget Windows 10 tablets. But ASUS did include a MicroSD port that will allow users to extend the storage space. We recommend a high speed 64GB or 128GB MicroSD card to boost the ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA’s storage space. The IPS touchscreen display offers great viewing angles and is quite responsive,ut the brightness levels could be a bit higher to complement the sharp image quality. The excellent battery life makes this convertible laptop a great choice for users after a cheap and ultra portable travel companion.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 10.75 hours battery life
  • 2.6 lbs

Pros

  • Excellent battery life
  • Sturdy build
  • USB Type-C
  • IPS display

Cons

  • Weak audio
  • Slightly underpowered for intensive apps
  • Limited storage space

Summary

The ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP200SA offers excellent battery life and a great IPS display, but the underpowered processor is limited to basic computing tasks.

ASUS Transformer-Book-Chi-10.1-Inch

ASUS Transformer Book Chi T100CHI-C1-BK 10.1-inch

The Transformer Book Chi with its all metal design boasts superior build quality than most notebooks at this price. However, you are trading off screen real estate and hardware performance for portability and hybrid functionality. While the original T100 felt more like a budget device, the T100 Chi swaps its predecessor’s bulky plastic chassis for a 0.5-inch aluminum unibody exterior. It uses a magnetic latch to hold the tablet and keyboard firmly together, instead of the flimsy clamps that were used in the original. Along the edge of the screen you’ll find a Micro USB 2.0 port, a Micro USB 3.0 port, micro-HDMI, a micro-SD slot and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Improvements have also been made in the display and performance department. The T100 Chi comes with a sharp 1,920 x 1,200 pixel-resolution touch display with excellent viewing angles.. The brightness is enough for indoor use, but the glossy surface makes it difficult to see outdoors. It also supports the Asus Active Stylus Pen that’s sold separately. Inside, it has a 1.46 GHz Quad-Core Intel Atom Z3775 processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage. This hardware is geared towards everyday tasks like spreadsheet editing, browsing, emails, video playback and light picture editing. A weak integrated graphics combined with a small memory and storage makes it unsuitable for running large applications and games. However, less power means more battery life, and the T100 Chi lasts almost 10 hours on a charge. In conclusion, this device is suitable for any basic user who is looking for extra mobility and a premium design on a budget.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixels (IPS)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.4 lbs

Pros

  • Good build quality
  • Stylish convertible design
  • Long battery life
  • Fantastic keyboard and touchpad
  • Good display

Cons

  • Attracts fingerprints
  • Only 2 USB ports
  • Sub-par performance

Summary

A well built convertible device with a sharp screen, fantastic keyboard and long lasting battery. The metal does tend to pick up finger prints easily and the performance is a bit lacking.
