Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition 15.6-InchDell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition 15.6-Inch

Dell are known for their budget friendly offerings and rugged business machines. However, these laptops are usually full of unwanted third party apps and features that will slow down your machine. This is where Microsoft has stepped in and promises no third-party bloatware with their Signature Edition laptops. This means that the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV Signature Edition will only ship with a few Microsoft apps that you can easily remove from your laptop if you want a completely barebones Windows laptop. The Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV is an updated version of the Inspiron I5558-2144SLV and has now been beefed up with a newer sixth generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor for increased performance. While the newer processor will support DDR4 RAM, Dell has decided to use the same DDR3L RAM as its predecessor. However this is not a mark against the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV as the installed 8GB of RAM will still feel snappy while surfing the web or working in more hardware intensive apps. A new processor also means a new Intel HD Graphics chip, which will mean slightly better performance for the casual gamer who enjoys titles such as Diablo 3, Warframe or CS: Go. The Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV also sees and improvement in the display department, as it now features a Full-HD display so that you can enjoy your favorite 1080p media. In addition to the sharp display, the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV also features a touchscreen panel with 10-finger multi-touch support that will allow you to easily navigate around Windows. Another new feature is the addition of an Intel RealSense 3D camera. This allows the Dell Inspiron i5559-4682SLV to utilize Windows Hello functionality for quick and easy log-ins and enhanced security. You also get a backlit keyboard to allow you to work more comfortably in low light condition. One of the only drawbacks is that like all budget laptops it has a slower 5400rpm hard drive. While it offers ample storage space, it will mean waiting longer for Windows to load and apps to launch.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels (TN)

Lenovo ThinkPad E560 15.6-inchLenovo ThinkPad E560 15.6-inch

Lenovo picked up the ThinkPad legacy when they purchased it from IBM in 2005, and they have done a great job in making sure that the ThinkPad range lives up to its name. The Lenovo ThinkPad E560 offers an all plastic design but feels quite sturdy. However, it hasn’t been MIL-SPEC tested and it might not be as durable as some of their other laptops. If you are familiar with the ThinkPad line of laptops then you will instantly recognize the cherry red TrackPoint nub which allows for much faster navigation than the trackpad. The Lenovo ThinkPad E560 is powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, which will easily cope with basic home and office tasks. Lenovo have left one of the RAM slots free, and you will easily and cheaply be able to upgrade the RAM to 8GB for increased performance when it comes to heavy multitasking. Like all ThinkPad laptops, Lenovo has put an emphasis on security. You get a fingerprint reader for biometric logins and the TPM encryption ensures that you can secure your hard drive to prevent the data from being accessed. While many budget friendly laptops feature 5400rpm hard drives, Lenovo have fitted the E560 with a faster 7200rpm hard drive. The 500GB hard drive will allow you to store a decent amount of work and multimedia files. It comes preloaded with Windows 7 Pro, which allows you to access a host of features that are not available in Windows 7 Home. If you want to upgrade to Windows 10, Lenovo have included a Windows 10 Professional license.

Specs

  • TrackPoint nub
  • Fingerprint reader

Cons

  • Not MIL-SPEC tested
  • Dull display
  • Lots of Lenovo bloatware

Summary

The Lenovo ThinkPad E560 features powerful hardware, a fingerprint reader and Windows 7 Pro. But the 4GB of RAM will feel a bit sluggish when it comes to heavier multitasking.

HP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition 15.6-inchHP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition 15.6-inch

The Signature Edition series of laptops from Microsoft are seemingly unique as they are free of any 3rd-party trialware and bloatware apps. This is a niche offering and perfect for users who would otherwise remove the preinstalled bloatware from their system. The design of the HP 15-ay091ms is similar to most of HP’s budget range and the sturdy plastic shells will be durable enough to withstand being carried around daily for school or college students. The 6th generation Intel Core i3-6100U processor and 8GB of RAM will easily handle everyday tasks and will even be able to run more intensive apps if needed. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample space for storing multimedia and work files. The keyboard is well laid out and makes word processing quite easy and effortless. The Display is a standard 1366 x 768 display panel which is exactly what we expect to find on budget laptops. But this doesn’t stop it from delivering vibrant details and good colors. The display also offers 10-finger multitouch, meaning users will be able to effortlessly navigate around Windows 10. While the colors are good, the viewing angles are very average and this is due to the TN panel that has been used. While one of its predecessors the HP 15-r018dx lacked Bluetooth connectivity, HP has given the HP 15-ay091ms Bluetooth 4.0 for users who want to use their Bluetooth peripherals and save their USB ports. Overall the HP 15-ay091ms Signature Edition is a clean cut budget laptop that has HP’s legendary reliability and a clean version of Windows 10.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5.25 hours battery life

Laptops Under $500

These laptops are all still excellent deals but aren’t currently in our pool of top picks. That said, they still come highly recommended and are worth a review if you are serious about exploring all of your available options.

Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-5718SLVDell Inspiron 15 i5558-5718SLV Signature Edition 15.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron range has made a good name for itself when it comes to quality and affordability. A fine example of this is the Dell Inspiron i5558-5718SLV Signature Edition which features the typical stylish Inspiron looks, good performance and an attractive price. While the Inspiron i5558-5718SLVBLK features an older Haswell processor, but boasts a higher benchmark score than its newer i3 counterpart. While the touchscreen display offers great colors and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080, but the touchscreen can be unresponsive at times and users who expect a flawless Smartphone or Tablet experience will be disappointed with its performance. A spacious 1TB mechanical hard drive offers enough space for work and multimedia. While the slower 5400rpm drive speed is a limiting factor on gaming and other high performance laptops, it is sufficient for most tasks that the Dell Inspiron i5558-5718SLV will be used for. As it is a general business and all-round laptop, it boasts integrated Intel graphics which will struggle to run any modern gaming titles with acceptable frame rates. But the Intel HD Graphics 4400 chip will run apps such as Adobe Photoshop and CoralDRAW for users looking to run design software. While there are laptops from Dell with newer hardware, the Inspiron i5558-5718SLV is still a good contender for students and business professionals.

Leneovo Ideapad 310 80SM003SUS 15.6-inchLeneovo Ideapad 310 80SM003SUS 15.6-inch

When it comes value for money laptops that won’t break the bank, Lenovo is one of the most recognized brands on the market. They have been releasing laptops for the budget conscious buyer since they took over IBM’s personal computer division in 2005. The Lenovo Ideapad 310 80SM003SUS wasn’t designed for the hardcore gamer or for the power user, but was designed for the everyday home and office use. Its all-plastic design is relatively durable and can withstand its fair share of abuse. Powering the Lenovo Ideapad 310 80SM003SUS is a sixth generation Skylake-based Intel Core i3-6100U processor and 4GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM, which is enough for basic tasks such as email, Skype and web browsing. You can add a single 4GB DDR4 RAM module to the laptop to bring it up to the maximum of 8GB that the laptop supports. However, you will have to make sure that it is 2133MHz RAM to match the installed 4GB that are soldered to the motherboard. While the 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for all of your work and multimedia files, it is a slower 5400rpm drive. This will mean that your Windows OS will boot slower than laptops with SSD and Hybrid drives and your apps will take a bit longer to load. While this is not a train smash, you can have a look through our guide for a laptop that comes stock with an SSD storage drive. The display offers good image quality and acceptable viewing angles despite being an entry-level display panel. You will easily be able to binge watch your favorite movies and series in HD (720p).

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home

Cons

HP Pavilion 15ac151dx 15.6-inchHP Pavilion 15ac151dx 15.6-inch

Users who are after a reliable laptop that can run a host of everyday apps will find comfort in one of HP’s latest offerings. The world renowned laptop manufacturer is known for its rugged business machines and for their range of affordable solutions for the home and the office. The HP Pavilion 15ac151dx is a budget friendly laptop which features decent hardware for its sub $400 price tag. Sporting an ultra low voltage 5th generation Intel i5-5200U processor and 4GB of RAM, the HP Pavilion 15ac151dx will deal with most day-to-day tasks with ease. But we do recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 8GB to boost performance and to allow resource hungry applications such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to run smoothly. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for media and for college or work documents and assignments. The slower 5400rpm drive speed is perfectly suited for the tasks that the HP Pavilion 15ac151dx was designed for, but users who are after faster Windows boot and app loading times can easily replace the HDD with an SSD. While it is not designed to be a gaming laptop, the Intel HD Graphics 5500 will run older games and is suited for casual gaming. But the budget price does have some drawbacks, there is no Bluetooth connectivity, the display is only suited for 720p videos, the maximum brightness is not very high and the battery life is very average.

HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr 15.6-inchHP Pavilion 15-aw068nr 15.6-inch

2016 has seen quite a few all-purpose laptops being released onto the market and the HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr is one of the first laptops to sport AMD’s latest Bristol Ridge processor and their latest GPU. Offering a sleek design, the HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr looks great but the purple color will not appeal to everyone. Weighing in at 4.55 pounds, the HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr is lighter than most of the 15.6-inch laptops in its price category. Sporting the latest 7th generation AMD A9-9410 processor and 4GB of DDR4 RAM, the HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr will cope with day-to-day tasks with ease. But the 4GB of RAM will struggle with more intensive apps and the memory slot is not user accessible. The 1TB mechanical hard drive offers ample storage space for multimedia and work files. The HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr features a fairly responsive touchscreen, but the display only offers a maximum resolution of 1366 x 786. The Radeon R5 430M integrated graphics offers slightly better performance than the Intel HD Graphics 520 and will allow for casual gaming. While it’s a 2016 release the HP Pavilion 15-aw068nr lacks next generation connectivity and is missing Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 3.1 Type-C.

The AMD A10-8700P processor and 16GB of RAM will handle any business related tasks with ease. While it is not a dedicated gaming laptop, it does come equipped with a Radeon R6 graphics chip and can be used for casual gaming. Finding a laptop with an Intel Skylake i5 processor for under $450 is quite rare, but the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS manages to squeeze in an i5 processor for its attractive processor. The textured plastic shell gives the laptop an elegant look and feel that we would usually expect from more expensive laptops. While many laptops under $450 only feature entry level AMD processors or cheaper Intel processors, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS is powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor. The processor is backed by 4GB of RAM which will be sufficient for basic tasks, but it does leave the laptop feeling a bit sluggish after prolonged use or when attempting more intense multitasking. The RAM can cheaply be upgraded to 8GB for a big boost in performance. To store all of your work or multimedia files, the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS features a healthy 1TB of storage space. The hard drive can be upgraded to either a Hybrid drive or an SSD, for those who are after lightning fast boot and app loading speeds. While the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574-53QS is not at all a gaming laptop, you will be able to do some casual gaming thanks to the Intel HD Graphics 520 graphics processor. Like most budget friendly 15.6-inch laptops, it comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution display. But it still manages to offer vivid colors and sharp image quality for a budget display.

ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA-UB31T 15.6-inch

ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA-UB31T 15.6-inch

The ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA-UB31T has a unique design with a flexible hinge capable of flipping the screen angle to 360 degrees, which is not something you’d typically find on a budget laptop. The approach is similar to what Lenovo did with its Yoga 2 hybrid, allowing the screen to fold into different modes like laptop, stand, tent and tablet. Many think a hybrid design is more practical on small screens but the TP500LA-UB31T comes with a larger 15.6-inch screen. Fortunately, ASUS has made the built lightweight so that it’s convenient to carry around even in tablet mode. Aesthetically, it is a step above its competitors. It’s thin, light and feels expensive thanks to the brushed metal sheet on the lid. The 1366 x 768 TN display is sufficiently clear though still falls short compared to more high-quality IPS panels. While most convertible laptops at this price feature low-end Intel Celeron processors, the TP500LA packs more of a punch with its Intel Core i3-4030u processor. Its performance falls in the top-end of the budget segment, meaning you’ll be able to do your daily office work as well as light multitasking with ease. Low end gaming is also possible with the Intel HD 4400 graphics. We’d expect higher battery life on premium convertibles, but for a budget hybrid, 5 hours will do just fine. Basic users with a preference for modern design trends will find the TP500LA-UB31T a great purchase thanks to its innovative design and solid feature set.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 8.1
  • 4.5 hours battery life
  • 5 lbs

Pros

  • Solid build quality
  • Clever multi-functional design
  • Fast processor
  • Long battery life

Cons

  • Awkward to hold in tablet mode
  • Sub-par display

Summary

An ultra portable well built device that will last a long time on a full charge while delivering fantastic performance and versatility. This device can be awkward in tablet mode and the display could be sharper.

Lenovo G50 59421807 15.6-inch

Like most low-end laptops, the plastic shelled Lenovo G50-59421807 has neither an outstanding appearance or powerful internal hardware. Designed for the average user, it sports a minimalistic design and packs just enough power to run basic tasks on Windows 8. The textured black casing looks professional and doesn’t attract as much fingerprints as glossy surfaces on competitors like the HP Pavilion 15 and Dell Inspiron 15. With a bright 15.6-inch screen, a full-size keyboard and a battery life of almost 5 hours, it is well-suited for productivity users who want a comfortable machine for working with documents. At 4.6 pounds it is much lighter than common 15-inch laptops, and it also includes an optical drive. It’s equipped with an Intel Core i3-4030u processor, 500GB Hard Drive and 6GB of RAM as opposed to 4GB in many competitors. It handles normal tasks such as video streaming, web browsing and spreadsheets without any issue. With a higher than standard amount of memory, it keeps Windows from bogging down as you open multiple browser tabs and multiple programs. Furthermore, you can add up to 16GB of RAM and upgrade hard drive via empty slots inside the bottom cover. Light gaming is also possible with the integrated Intel HD 4400 graphics. Overall, budget buyers will love the G50-59421807 for its large screen laptop, slim profile and comprehensive spec sheet.

Lenovo Ideapad 500-80K4001MUS

Lenovo Ideapad 500-80K4001MUS 15.6-inch

The Lenovo IdeaPad 500-80K4001MUS is another great offering from Lenovo. Sporting an AMD A10 8700P processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, the IdeaPad 500-80K4001MUS provides solid performance for day to day tasks. The 15.6 inch IPS display offers full HD with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 and great viewing angles. Image quality is backed up by a Radeon R6 GPU, which is comparable to the NVIDIA GT540M and handles moderate photo editing and casual gaming. Most newer titles will have to run on low-medium settings, as it is one of ATI’s medium performance chipsets. But for basic tasks like internet browsing and movies the GPU offers solid image quality. Some users have reported very average battery life of 3-4 hours of moderate use, so expect lower figures with more intense processes like gaming and media editing. Upgrading the IdeaPad 500-80K4001MUS with a new hard drive or increasing the RAM is a lot harder than other devices, as it requires the entire back plate to be removed to access the internals, including a hidden screw behind one of the information stickers. As an all-round laptop the IdeaPad 500-80K4001MUS does well, but the average battery life does mean that it is not ideal for those constantly on the go.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 3.75 hours battery life
  • 5.06 lbs

Pros

  • 1920x180 IPS display
  • Sleek design
  • Radeon R6 GPU
  • 1TB of storage

Cons

  • Average battery life
  • Noticeable keyboard flex
  • Hard to upgrade

Summary

A great laptop that offers decent performance, a full HD display and a sleek design, at an affordable price.

Dell-Inspiron-11-i3147-10000SLV (2)

Dell Inspiron 11 i3147-10000SLV 11.6-inch

The Dell Inspiron i3147-10000SLV is a versatile device offering the convenience of a tablet and laptop in a single package. Its silver colored chassis looks very classy and thanks to sturdy hinges it feels much more solid than a standard budget netbook. It is only 0.8-inch thick and weighs only 3 pounds but still feels bulky in tablet mode when the 11-inch screen is flipped over the keyboard. Despite its small body, the keys are well-spaced and big, so that the typing is as accurate and comfortable as a desktop keyboard. It is powered by a Quad-Core Intel Pentium N3540 processor, which is better than most Intel Atom processors in both performance and battery life. While it is not a machine for serious media editing or gaming, low-resolution image editing, streaming movies, web surfing and casual gaming are possible. The system runs well on the default 4GB of RAM and 500GB, but if you want an extra boost you can upgrade to 8GB of RAM and an SSD. The 6 hours of Battery life is excellent, beating out many similar convertible laptops. By removing the bottom panel, users can easily expand the device’s memory and hard drive. It comes with Windows 10 preinstalled so you don’t have to spend time upgrading like with other laptops that come with the older the Windows 8 operating system. The i3147-3750SLV is not designed for gamers or power users, but if your needs are only basic, it is a reasonably priced ultraportable hybrid packed with essential features and the latest Windows operating system.

Specs

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 5 hours battery life
  • 3.07 lbs

Pros

  • Convertible design
  • Easy to upgrade
  • Bright and sharp display
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • No SSD
  • Build quality of the keyboard

Summary

A portable hybrid device with a great display and long battery life. The storage and RAM are easily upgradable, however we do recommend adding a SSD for improved performance.

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T 13.3-inchASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T 13.3-inch

If you are looking for a super thin and light Ultrabook for work or to take with you when you travel, then you might want to consider looking at the ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T. At just 2.9-pounds and 0.5-inches thin, this laptop offers the ultimate portability for its price. However, the metal used is slightly thin and there is a small amount of keyboard flex while typing, which might annoy some users. The ASUS ZenBook Flex also has a slightly below average trackpad, however, you can use a small mouse instead to alleviate any annoying trackpad lag or misclicks. Powered by an Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor, the ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T is one of the few laptops from ASUS which uses the Skylake mobile processor. While it has a slower clock speed of 0.9GHZ, it can boost to 2.2GHz when needed and is not intended for heavier multitasking or for design and video editing applications. However, this processor and the installed 8GB of RAM will easily allow you to send emails, Skype with family and friends, browse the web and to use the various Office applications from Microsoft. To store all of your files, the ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T features a superfast M.2 256GB solid state drive. If you have a larger collection of multimedia files, you will want to use a good external hard drive, as the SSD will fill up very quickly. As expected from this thin laptop, the audio is not very loud and this has to do with the space the speakers have to resonate sound. While the audio is not as good as some of the other laptops in this guide, it is still good for streaming media or while using Skype.

Specs

  • 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 10 hours battery life
  • 2.9 lbs

Pros

  • Thin and light
  • Fast SSD
  • Good amount of memory
  • USB 3.1 Type-C port
  • Battery life
  • Compact design

Cons

  • Micro HDMI port
  • Buggy trackpad
  • Slight keyboard flex
  • Average audio

Summary

The ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T is a compact and light Ultrabook that is great for the user who is constantly on the go. However, the trackpad has much to be desired and might annoy some users.

ASUS-F555LA-EH51

ASUS  F555LA-EH51  15.6-inch

Note: This laptop is priced above $500. The ASUS  F555LA-EH51 is a cost effective solution for budget shoppers looking for an affordable and fast performing laptop for daily use. It has a black plastic body with texture finish, adding a layer of protection against accidental scratches and fingerprints. While not premium, the build quality is above average and the design looks modern. Despite including all the standard set of I/O ports, it is only 1-inch thick and weighs 4.9 pounds, which is a lot less than most 15-inch budget laptops. The laptop is equipped with a DVD writer along with all the usual ports such as USB 3.0, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, HDMI, VGA and Bluetooth. It has a 1366 x 768 resolution display with good viewing angles and adequate brightness for movies and reading. There are affordable laptops with a Full-HD display, but most of them make huge compromises in performance. Powered by the latest Broadwell Intel i5-5200U processor coupled with 8GB of RAM and Intel HD 5500 graphics, the  F555LA-EH51  gives you a lot of bang for your buck. It has all the power you need for everyday tasks- from web browsing, video streaming to light gaming. One downside is that it only has a 500GB HDD, while most competitors offer twice that amount of storage. The system is highly power efficient, running almost 7 hours on battery but the battery life varies by operating conditions. Keep in mind that its battery is under the cover, which makes it difficult to remove or replace for a non-technical person. While the F555LA-EH51  is a great laptop, there are better machines available if you are willing to accept some minor shortcomings. If you are okay with a slightly heavier laptop with shorter battery life, the Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV and Toshiba Satellite  C55-C5241 both offer better price to performance ratios.

Specs

  • 15.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels (TN)
  • 4 hours battery life
  • 6.55 lbs

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Fast processor
  • Ample RAM
  • Decent battery life

Cons

  • non-removable battery

Summary

While perfect for general day to day computing and media consumption don't expect to be playing any new demanding games.
